The San Francisco 49ers added more proven depth at the corner position by signing veteran corner Josh Norman to a one-year deal. The team confirmed the news on their official website while also announcing the release of cornerback Dontae Johnson.

Norman, who was an All-Pro player in 2015, was monitored by several other teams, but ended up taking the opportunity to play meaningful football in San Francisco. He will reportedly earn up to $2.5 million in 2021, according to his agreement with the 49ers.

Norman arrives in San Francisco after spending the 2020 season with the Buffalo Bills. He played nine games in the regular season, three as a starter, and managed 24 tackles with four passes defended, one interception, and one defensive touchdown.

With 49ers, Norman is expected to serve as a primary backup for starters Emmanuel Moseley and Jason Verrett. His competition for the spot is rookie duo Deommodore Lenoir and Ambry Thomas, while K’Waun Williams is expected to occupy the nickel CB role.

Josh Norman started his NFL career as the Carolina Panthers’ fifth-round pick in 2012. After four years with the franchise, in which he earned All-Pro and Pro Bowl nods and helped the Panthers reach the Super Bowl, he signed with Washington. He also spent four years there before embarking on a stint with the Bills.

Norman has 440 career tackles to go with 83 passes defended, 15 interceptions, 13 forced fumbles, and three defensive scores.

It didn’t take long for veteran cornerback Josh Norman to find a new team after being released by Washington Redskins last week. According to ESPN’s sources, Norman agreed to a deal with Buffalo Bills.

Norman reportedly inked a one-year deal with the Bills that will pay him $6 million in 2020. The total value could go up to $8 million if various incentives are met.

Bills emerged as early favorites to sign Norman due to his ties with the team’s head coach Sean McDermott. The pair previously worked together with Carolina Panthers, where McDermott served as a defensive coordinator under Ron Rivera.

Norman is expected to be the Bills’ second starting corner alongside Pro Bowler Tre’Davious White, although his starting spot still isn’t locked up. His role will probably depend on whether Buffalo will bring back second-year CB Levi Wallace, who started all 16 games in 2019.

Despite being the highest-paid corner in the game in the last four seasons, Josh Norman failed to be a difference-maker that Redskins signed him to be in 2016. Norman put up average numbers over the past four seasons, which caused his playing time to diminish in the past four years. He only started eight games in 2019, contributing with 40 tackles, one interception, and 1.0 sacks.

Norman carried a $12.5 million cap hit next season, so the decision to cut him was understandable from Washington’s point of view. Buffalo, on the other hand, got a veteran that they hope could benefit from a change of scenery and once again be a respected corner in the league.

The Washington Redskins cut ties with cornerback Josh Norman over the weekend, once considered one of the best defensive players in the National Football League.

Norman’s release was almost a given after another tumultuous season in Northern Virginia. After signing a big-money contract with the ‘Skins after seasons of dominant play with the Carolina Panthers, the South Carolina native never quite lived up to his billing at Fedex Field.

The five-year, $75 million deal given to Norman was widely considered yet another example of the franchise’s reckless, ill-advised spending.

After spending three seasons as an undisputed starter with the ‘Skins despite mediocre production, Norman was benched at the end of the 2019 season. He only appeared on special teams in the last games of the season despite the team being short at cornerback.

It was a long fall from grace for Norman, who was a first-team All-Pro squad member and a Pro Bowl participant in the 2015 season before joining the Redskins.

Washington will save $12.5 million in salary-cap space after releasing the 32-year-old veteran, space that they intend to use in the free-agent market to improve a team that limped to a 3-13 record in the 2019 season.

Norman is now a free agent and may sign with any team.
