The Los Angeles Chargers placed star quarterback Justin Herbert on Injured Reserve on Tuesday. The team also announced that Herbert is set to undergo finger surgery that will sideline him for the remainder of the 2023 season.

Herbert hurt his finger in the second quarter of Sunday’s 24-7 loss to the Denver Broncos. He will end his campaign with 3,134 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, and seven picks.

Being placed on Injured Reserve means that Herbert’s streak of 62 starts in the NFL will come to an end. Only Buffalo Bills’ Josh Allen had more consecutive starts at the QB position with 84.

“Certainly, there’s nothing more important than that, than his right hand. And his long-term future,” said Chargers’ head coach Brandon Staley said of Herbert. “He’s 25 years old, and he’s got a really, really bright future in front of him. So, like I said, every decision we make is going to be with that in mind.”

It makes sense for the Chargers to shut down Herbert considering their playoff chances are slim-to-none. The LA team has a 5-8 record and even winning out their remaining four games wouldn’t guarantee a spot in the postseason.

With Herbert out, the Chargers will turn to backup Easton Stick. The former fifth-round pick replaced Herbert in the Broncos game and completed 13 out of 24 pass attempts while throwing for 179 yards.

The Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is recovering well from his left shoulder setback, the player himself revealed. This confirms a report from ESPN’s Lindsey Thiry that Herbert is hopeful to begin throwing again “in the next couple of weeks” as he continues his recovery process.

When questioned on Thursday, Herbert revealed that he believes that he is now “getting closer to 75 percent” recovered after undergoing surgery in January on his non-throwing left shoulder to repair a torn labrum.

“It’s a pretty long process,” Herbert remarked at the Chargers’ draft party. “Kind of expecting it to be a five- or six-month recovery and being on the lead shoulder, it’s kind of tough throwing and golfing and doing all those things that are kind of explosive movements.”

Herbert’s update was not the only major news concerning the Chargers on Thursday. The team selected TCU wideout Quentin Johnston as their first-round pick on Thursday night. Selected 21st overall, Johnston expressed his joy at joining the Chargers and his excitement to play alongside Herbert.

Leading his Los Angeles Chargers to a 23-17 win over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, quarterback Justin Herbert showed what he could do when he has his favorite targets on the field. With wideouts Mike Williams and Keenan Allen both at his disposal, Herbert threw for 367 yards and a touchdown.

The productive outing versus the Dolphins not only helped his team to keep a good case for the playoffs but also got Herbert in the history books. The 24-year-old player now has 13,056 career passing yards, which is the most by a quarterback in his first three seasons in NFL history. He now also has 21 games with 300+ passing yards through the first three seasons in the league, which is also more than anyone else in that time span.

Herbert managed to jump over a pair of former Indianapolis Colts quarterbacks, Andrew Luck and Peyton Manning. Luck totaled 12,957 passing yards in his first three years as a pro, while Manning had 12,287 passing yards.

“I’ve got a ton of respect for Andrew Luck,” Herbert said when asked about Luck. “For him as a football player, as a person, as a teammate — I think it’s just cool to be in the same conversation as him.”

Many believed that Justin Herbert would be an MVP candidate in 2022, but some inconsistencies early in the season have kept him out of the conversation. Still, Herbert has picked up the pace lately and is playing like one of the best signal callers in the league. He currently has 3,706 passing yards and 21 TDs.

Los Angeles Chargers coach Brandon Staley stated on Wednesday that quarterback Justin Herbert is now considered day-to-day after exhibiting a gradual recovery from a rib injury incurred six days prior.

Herbert suffered a fracture to his rib cartilage during the Chargers’ 27-24 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs last Thursday after being hit hard by Chiefs defensive end Mike Danna. After a brief injury interval, Herbert returned to action, missing just one play. He was subsequently hurt when sandwiched between Chiefs pass-rushers Frank Clark and George Karlaftis. While choosing to remain in the game, Herbert’s injury began to flare up once play was concluded.

Staley revealed that Herbert has recovered significantly since his injury, explaining that the decision for Herbert to play in Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars will rest firmly on the quarterback’s shoulders.

Herbert participated partially in training on Wednesday. While he did not throw any passes in the portion of the training session that was open to reporters, he was involved in handling balls off to running backs. Currently, Herbert remains listed as a limited participant on the Chargers’ injury report.

Now that the Los Angeles Rams have officially been eliminated from the playoffs by the Green Bay Packers, the Los Angeles Chargers can move in on defensive coordinator Brandon Staley.

According to reports, the Chargers have already agreed to terms that will make the now-former Rams defensive coordinator their new head coach. The Chargers met with Staley for the second time on Sunday and a deal is expected to be signed soon now that the Rams are no longer playing.

Staley’s rise in the ranks has been very quick, with this year being his first as a defensive coordinator. Staley got his start in the NFL as an outside linebackers coach for the Chicago Bears in 2017. He then took the same position with the Denver Broncos before accepting the defensive coordinator job with the Rams in 2020.

The Chargers look to be a good fit for Staley, who will have top-tier talent at his disposal, namely edge rusher Joey Bosa and star safety Derwin Hames leading the defense. Staley also has quarterback Justin Herbert, who is expected to be named Rookie of the Year after a record-breaking 2020 season.

Staley is also expected to retain offensive coordinator Shane Steichen, who will be expected to continue shaping Herbert into a long-term franchise quarterback.

The Los Angeles Chargers lost yet another very close game on Sunday, coming up short in their 31-26 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders.

The Chargers had two opportunities to score a game-winning touchdown from the 4-yard line with 10 seconds remaining in the game, but were unable to convert, leading to the team’s six loss of the year. Every one of the Chargers’ six losses has been a loss by seven or less points, showing a clear trend of not being able to win close games all season, which head coach Anthony Lynn is sick of seeing.

Asked by reporters about the close losses after Sunday’s game, Lynn said that the team has been “kicked in the gut sick times,” this year, adding that “that’s six times too many.”

Lynn’s message to the team was to just keep competing and hopefully, some of these tough losses should eventually start turning into wins.

The constant losses by just one score have cast a shadow on the excellent performances that rookie quarterback Justin Herbert has been delivering since he got his first start in Week 2. Once again, Herbert led the Chargers down the field, completing a 16-yard pass to wide receiver Mike Williams that put them in prime position to score the go-ahead touchdown with 30 seconds left in the game.

Herbert threw to receiver Donald Perham Jr. in the end zone for the final play of the game, which was first ruled a touchdown catch and later overturned upon further review by the officials.

Los Angeles Chargers will stick with rookie quarterback Justin Herbert as their starter for the remainder of the 2020 NFL season. The news was confirmed by Chargers’ head coach Anthony Lynn on Thursday.

Veteran Tyrod Taylor started the season under center, but was forced to miss the previous three games due to an injury caused by the team’s medical staff. While Lynn repeatedly said that Taylor will get his job back once he’s healthy, Herbert’s promising performances made him change his mind.

“He got thrown in the fire. I thought he handled the situation well, and I want to see more of him,” said Lynn. “It’s not going to be a situation where he’s looking over his shoulder. He’s our starting quarterback. He makes a bad play, he has a bad game, he’s our quarterback.”

Justin Herbert, who was Chargers’ No. 6 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, is currently completing an impressive 72.0 percent of his passes and has thrown for 931 yards to go with five touchdowns and three interceptions. While Herbert didn’t win a single game in three attempts, he held the team within one possession in each outing against strong opponents.

Herbert is facing another tough challenge in Week 5, as the Chargers are facing Drew Brees and New Orleans Saints.

Tyrod Taylor, on the other hand, is once again robbed from his starting position by an injury. Back in 2018, Taylor kicked off the season as Cleveland Browns’ starter but got hurt in Week 3, which allowed then-rookie Baker Mayfield to step in. By the time Taylor recovered, Mayfield already took command of the offense, and there was no way back.

LA Chargers’ rookie quarterback Justin Herbert learned that he will start the game against reigning Super Bowl champs Kansas City Chiefs just minutes before the kickoff. But the Oregon product didn’t let the weight of the moment affect his game. Instead, Herbert remained calm under pressure and delivered an impressive performance that probably convinced the Chargers that they didn’t make a mistake when they took him No.6 in this year’s NFL Draft.

Chargers entered the season with Tyrod Taylor as their starting QB, and the veteran was set to take under center against the Chiefs as well. However, Taylor felt chest pain shortly before the game was set to start and had to go to the hospital forcing the Chargers to turn to Herbert.

Despite being thrown into the action unprepared, Herbert did more than okay for his first game in the pros. He completed 66.7 percent of his passes, throwing for 311 yards and a touchdown.

The 22-year-old QB also added one rushing touchdown, and despite the 20-23 loss, impressed his head coach Anthony Lynn.

“He was prepared. For him to go in and manage the game and what he did under those circumstances, I was OK with how he handled things,” said Lynn. “I was pleased with Justin and how he handled the situation.”

However, this doesn’t mean Justin Herbert will continue to start. According to Lynn, Taylor will remain his first choice “if he’s 100 percent and ready to go.”

The team didn’t detail Tyrod Taylor’s health issues, but reportedly, the 31-year-old QB isn’t dealing with anything serious. In the Week 1 win over Cincinnati Bengals, Taylor threw for 208 yards and added 7 rushing yards.
