Serie A club Juventus has successfully applied for its 15-point deduction to be suspended pending a new trial. Juventus surged to third place in the Italian top flight as a result, putting themselves back in the mix for a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League.

Juventus was hit with their penalty in January following an investigation that uncovered that the club’s leadership was guilty of false accounting. In addition to the Serie A 15-point deduction, several members of the club’s board were handed bans from soccer activities, including former president Andrea Agnelli.

Following the investigation, Juventus appealed to CONI; Italy’s highest sports court within the Italian Olympic Committee. While several suspensions were upheld, including that of Agnelli and Tottenham director Fabio Paratici, six former board members had their appeals accepted, including former player Pavel Nedved.

In November, the entire Juventus board resigned from their roles following an investigation by Turin public prosecutors into alleged false bookkeeping. The preliminary hearing in a Turin court that was scheduled last month was postponed until May 10 for administrative reasons.

Serie A giants Juventus have just been docked 15 points for the current season after an Italian soccer court embarked on an investigation concerning the club’s transfer dealings, the national soccer federation (FIGC) announced on Friday. In addition, the court also imposed bans on 11 past and present Juventus directors from holding office in Italian soccer.

Before the ruling, a soccer prosecutor had requested a nine-point deduction for the team. As a result of the 15-point deduction, the previously third-placed team in Serie A with 37 points now drops to 10th position, moving them from title contenders to a position outside of qualification for European football.

“We consider this to be a blatant injustice also for millions of fans, which we trust will soon be remedied in the next court,” lawyers representing the club said in response to the court ruling. In addition to denying any wrongdoing, Juventus insists that its accounting continues to comply with industry standards.

In addition, eight other Italian clubs also under investigation were acquitted, including Empoli and Sampdoria.

Juventus won’t play knockout stage of the UEFA Champions League for the first time since 2013-14. The Seria A giants suffered a shocking 4-3 loss to Portugal side Benfica on Tuesday night, which ensured they couldn’t get one of the top two positions in Group H.

With one game left to play, Benfica and Paris Saint-Germain have 11 points and have qualified for the knockout stage. Juve is third with the same number of points as Maccabi Haifa, and still has a chance to secure a spot in Europa League.

Benfica, who entered the match against Juventus with a 19-game unbeaten run at their Estadio da Luz, managed to strike first in the 17th minute thanks to a goal by 18-year-old defender Antonio Silva. Knowing what was at stake, Juve immediately started pushing for an equalizer and managed to get one via Moise Kean just four minutes later.

At this point, everyone expected Juve to take the command, but it was actually the Portuguese team who thrived under pressure. Benfica got the lead back in the 28th minute after midfielder Joao Mario scored from a penalty before forward Rafa Silva scored late in the first half to make it 3-1 for the home side. With Juventus unable to get things going in the second period, the latter player added one more goal in the 50th minute.

Facing a possibility of an embarrassing loss to a team that was considered the underdog, Juve started a late rally. They managed to cut into Benfica’s lead via goals from Arkadiusz Milik in the 77th minute and USMNT’s Weston McKennie in 79th, and it appeared the spectators were in for a thrilling finish.

However, Benfica fortified its defense and managed to hold onto the lead that saw them getting out of the UCL group stage for the second straight season. In 2021-22 Benfica made it to the quarterfinals before being eliminated by Liverpool.

“It was a typical Champions League match, we knew we were playing against a great team,” said Joao Mario after the game. “Our game was beautiful until the 70th minute, then Juve have a lot of quality and put us in difficulty. We know that there is a long way to go, the season has just begun. We must continue like this, keep the right mindset and always work hard.”

Juventus are set to start the new Seria A campaign without their talented defender Matthijs De Ligt. The club announced on Wednesday that De Ligt underwent a shoulder surgery which will keep him out of action for three months.

According to the statement issued by Juve, de Ligt’s “stabilization surgery” was a “complete success,” and the player will make full recovery.

The timeline on De Ligt’s recovery will make the 21-year-old miss at least two months of action in 2020/21. The new domestic season in Italy is scheduled to kick off on September 19th.

Not having one of their key defenders might prove troublesome for Juve as the club embarks on a quest to win their 10th straight title. The club is expected to have a revamp this summer as they hired a new coach in Andrea Pirlo and look to bring players that suit his style. It won’t be a surprise if some of those players are defenders, especially since the team back four is filled with veterans aside from De Ligt.

Matthijs De Ligt joined Juventus last summer, arriving in an $85 million transfer from Eredivisie giants Ajax. During the first few months in Turin, De Ligt struggled to justify this massive fee but ended up improving significantly as the season progressed. He ended up making 35 appearances (26 starts) in all competitions while managing to contribute with three goals as well.

Despite being the centerpiece of numerous transfer rumors in the past, it appears that Argentinian star forward Paulo Dybala is set to remain at Juventus. According to Goal.com, Dybala and Juve are currently discussing a contract extension and are very close to reaching a deal.

The new contract would reportedly keep Dybala in Turin through 2025 while bumping his salary to $14 million a year. The two sides have several minor issues to iron out but remain optimistic that the deal will be reached soon.

This news comes just days after Dybala told CNN that he is happy with Juve and would like to remain with the club for years to come.

“I am happy to be here, people love me very much and I love people very much. I have a great appreciation for the club and the people who are here, I have a good relationship with my president and we will certainly talk at some point,” said Dybala.

Paulo Dybala found himself on the brink of leaving Juventus last summer after a disappointing campaign in 2018/19 in which he scored just five goals. He was linked with several high-profile clubs, including PSG, Barcelona, and Manchester United, with Juve reportedly openly entertaining offers for him.

However, Dybala rejected the opportunity to leave Italy and it turned out to be a good decision for both sides. The 26-year-old managed to bounce back in 2019/20 and emerge as one of the club’s most important players. He scored 13 goals and added 12 assists in all competitions so far in the season.
