When Golden State Warriors sharpshooter Klay Thompson gets hot, there is no stopping him. The Phoenix Suns witnessed that first-hand after Thompson dropped 33 points on them in the first half of the Warriors’ 123-112 win on Monday night.

Thompson started his scoring run on the Warriors’ first possession of the game, hitting a three-pointer after an assist from Draymond Green. The 33-year-old All-Star went on to hit seven buckets from beyond the arc and shoot 12-of-18 from the field to help his team grab a 75-58 lead on the half.

The Suns game marked the fifth time that he managed to score at least eight three-pointers in the first half. According to Basketball Reference, this is the most by any player since “at least” the 1996-97 NBA season.

With the Warriors already having a big lead, Thompson took a breather in the second half. He finished the game with 38 points and five rebounds. He is currently averaging 22.3 points per game, tying his career-high from the 2016-17 campaign.

The win over the Suns allowed the Warriors to remain at No. 5 in the loaded West and avoid slipping to the play-in tournament. They are currently tied with the LA Clippers, who are at No. 6, and trail the fourth-seeded Phoenix by a game and a half.

Golden State Warriors’ Klay Thompson was projected to sit out the entire 2019/20 recovering from an ACL injury, but the All-Star might beat these odds. According to Warriors’ general manager Bob Myers, “there’s a chance” that Thompson still might play this season.

Myers expressed enthusiasm about Thompson’s return over the weekend during a chat with reporters on Warriors vs. Los Angeles Lakers game.

“I think there’s a chance,” said Myers when asked if Thompson might play this season. “We’re going to have an update probably around All-Star break. But like Steph, if they’re healthy and they’re cleared, they’ll play. But if they’re not, obviously we’re not going to play them.”

The Warriors’ are also without two-times MVP guard Stephen Curry, who had to undergo surgery to repair hand fracture in early November. Curry was initially projected to be out for three months, but he is still to return to action.

“They both love basketball. Klay has had the hardest time being away from it. It’s like he’s thirsty and can’t drink water,” Myers added. “And Steph as well. But Steph is closer than Klay. You can ask him yourself. But it feels like Klay hasn’t played in a long, long time. So it’ll be exciting when we got all those guys back.”

Klay Thompson tore his ACL in the third quarter of deciding Game 6 in NBA Finals against Toronto Raptors. Warriors ended up losing that game and failing to defend their NBA championship title from the previous season.

Thompson finished the 2018/19 regular season averaging 21.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.4 assists.

The Golden State Warriors’ reign as two-time defending NBA Champions ended with a Game 6 loss to the Toronto Raptors on Thursday night.

This wasn’t the only bad news that the Dubs received on a dark night for the team, however.

Klay Thompson was forced to leave the court in the third quarter of the game, and it turns out that the injury that forced him off was a torn ACL. He suffered the injury as he landed awkwardly after a foul on a layup attempt with 2:22 left in the quarter.

Miraculously, as Thompson limped to Golden State’s locker room, he turned around and returned to the court to shoot two free throws. This is due to a rule that doesn’t allow players to continue in the game if another player replaces them to shoot free throws. Thompson obviously was unaware of the severity of his injury at the time.

Thompson buried both free throws and then was immediately subbed out of the game, missing the final 14 minutes of a 114-110 Raptors victory.

His torn ACL means that he will probably that the shooting guard, who could opt to become a free agent this offseason, will miss the majority of the 2019-20 season while recovering and rehabbing his injury.
