The Charlotte Hornets’ star LaMelo Ball suffered an ankle injury in the second quarter of Sunday’s game against the Orlando Magic. It was the same ankle he underwent surgery on in March, causing him to miss the rest of the 2022-23 regular season.

Ball was hurt while making a driving layup over Magic’s Paolo Banchero. The 22-year-old player landed awkwardly, rolling his ankle and crashing to the floor. He was in obvious pain, needing help to get to the locker room.

The Hornets are optimistic that Ball only has an ankle sprain, although the full scope of injury will be known once he undergoes an MRI test.

LaMelo Ball has looked like a franchise star for the Hornets from the moment he was selected third overall in the 2020 NBA Draft. However, injuries have been a major issue for the one-time All-Star so far in his NBA career. He missed a good chunk of his rookie season due to a wrist issue and problems with his ankle, which limited him to only 36 games in 2022-23.

Before the latest injury, Ball looked better than ever. He was averaging a career-high 25.9 points and 8.6 assists to go with 5.8 rebounds. He also increased his efficiency, shooting 44.2% from the floor and making 38.9% of his three-point attempts.

Despite Ball playing great, the Charlotte Hornets have continued with their disappointing performances. They are 5-10 and sit on No. 12 in the Eastern Conference and might just get worse if Ball misses significant time.

The Charlotte Hornets announced that their All-Star point guard LaMelo Ball suffered a right ankle fracture in 117-106 win over the Detroit Pistons on Monday. Ball has been ruled out for the next game against the Phoenix Suns, with the franchise expected to reveal a timeline for his return after further tests.

Ball fractured his ankle while planting his foot awkwardly during a dribble in the third quarter of the Pistons’ game. He exited the contest immediately, having 18 points, six rebounds, and five assists up to that point.

Speaking with reporters after the game, the Hornets’ head coach Steve Clifford said he doesn’t have any details about when Ball could return to action.

“It’s just a basketball ankle, and there is nothing that you can do about that,” Clifford shared.

LaMelo Ball has been struggling with ankle injuries throughout the season, playing only 36 games in 2022-23. He is currently averaging 23.4 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 8.5 assists in his third season as a pro.

With the Charlotte Hornets embracing tanking this season, it would be surprising to see Ball again on the court this season. The Hornets are currently second-to-last in the East with a 20-43 record, which is fourth-worst in the league.

Charlotte Hornets guard LaMelo Ball reinjured his left ankle during the team’s 125-113 loss to the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday night. With only one minute and 34 seconds left in the final quarter, Ball accidentally stepped on a fan’s foot, thereby aggravating his pre-existing injury.

At the time of injury, Ball was attempting to save a ball from going out of bounds. He stepped on a seated fan’s foot as he attempted to prevent himself from falling into the crowd.

“It’s very tough but we have to be professionals about it,” Hornets guard Kelly Oubre Jr. commented. “It’s the game of basketball and those things happen. But people who are suited up and who are healthy enough to go out there, we have to go pick up that slack.”

The Hornets’ game against the Pacers was Ball’s third game since returning from his initial ankle injury. As his first home game since his return, Ball received an introduction from the public address announcer and a round of applause from fans during the routine pre-game player introductions.

The Charlotte Hornets might be forced to start the 2022-23 NBA campaign without their best player. The team revealed on Tuesday that All-Star guard LaMelo Ball is currently dealing with a sprained ankle and will be out indefinitely.

Ball got hurt on Monday night in Hornets’ 107-116 loss to the Washington Wizards. The 21-year-old player was driving to the basket when he stepped on veteran Anthony Gill’s foot and rolled his ankle.

The MRI test on Tuesday revealed the sprain with the Hornets saying that Ball’s return on the court depends on how he responds to rehab.

When asked about Ball’s injury on Tuesday, Hornets head coach Steve Clifford said he doesn’t know if the third overall pick in 2020 will be available for the season opener. However, he shared that the team will be ready for any scenario.

“We talked about whatever the plan is, you have to be on rehab,” Clifford added. “The better you are with it, the quicker you will get back. He was disappointed but very upbeat. It’s just part of the NBA.”

Internally, the Hornets are believed to be preparing for the start of the season without LaMelo Ball. According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, Ball has a Grade 2 sprain and is expected to miss the early part of the 2022-23 campaign.

Ball was coming off a great 2021-22 season in which he had career highs across the board. He averaged 20.1 points while adding 6.7 rebounds and 7.6 assists en route to his first career All-Star nod.

There’s officially a new record-holder for the youngest NBA player to record a triple-double—Charlotte Hornets rookie guard LaMelo Ball.

In a 113-105 win over the Atlanta Hawks, Ball put up 22 points, 12 boards, and 11 assists. He did it at the age of 19 years and 140 days old.

Interestingly enough, the very same record was also once held by Ball’s older brother Lonzo Ball. In Lonzo’s rookie season with the Los Angeles Lakers, he recorded a triple-double at 20 years and 15 days old.

It didn’t take long for Dallas Mavericks phenom Luka Doncic to get in on that action, beating Lonzo’s record and doing it at 19 years and 327 days.

Then it was the Orlando Magic’s Markelle Fultz’s turn, who stole the record by getting a triple-double at 19 years and 317 days.

Finally, LaMelo decided he wanted to be the record-holder, which is what brings us to his milestone today.

As the third overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, many people had high hopes for the youngster, predicting that he’ll eventually reach the All-Star level. However, draft hype doesn’t always translate to real-world success.

In LaMelo’s case, however, it seems to be rolling over pretty well. So far, he’s been averaging 12.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 5.9 assists—which is not bad at all for a rookie still getting his sea legs.

Ever since Minnesota Timberwolves got the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, the reports have been circling about the team’s intentions to explore trade offers for the selection. However, if they end up keeping the pick, Timberwolves will select LaMelo Ball, according to Jonathan Wasserman of Bleacher Report.

Timberwolves are interested in a trade because this year’s draft doesn’t have a standout prospect, which makes the No. 1 pick a lot tougher task compared to previous years. Also, all the top three projected prospects seem to be a bad fit for Minnesota.

Guards LaMelo Ball and Anthony Edwards, the leading candidates for the top overall pick, bring much of the same skills that the Timberwolves already have. Mello is similar to ball-dominant and defense-depraved D’Angelo Russell while Edwards doesn’t seem all that better than shooting guard Malik Beasley. James Wiseman is also believed to be among the top of the class, but his skills are similar to those of Karl-Anthony Towns.

Still, Wasserman reports that Minnesota Timberwolves continues to rank Ball at the top of their boards. In case that there is no trade, Timberwolves will disregard the fit and take the former Illawarra Hawks point guard.

Ball, who is the brother of New Orleans Pelicans’ guard Lonzo Ball, opted to skip college past season and ended up playing in Australia with the Hawks. The 19-year-old player won the NL Rookie of the Year, while averaging 17 points, 7.4 rebounds and 6.8 assists per game in his lone season there.

LaMelo Ball, brother of New Orleans Pelicans’ guard Lonzo Ball and potential No.1 pick in 2020 NBA Draft, failed in his attempt to buy Illawarra Hawks.

Ball, who played for the Hawks last season, teamed up with his manager Jermaine Jackson and made an offer for the Australian National Basketball League side earlier this year. However, the league opted to do business with a group led by former Philadelphia 76ers general manager Bryan Colangelo instead.

NBL made the official confirmation on Wednesday.

The process of Hawks’ ownership change started back in April when the club was placed into voluntary administration that resulted in NBL taking away their license. The league considered a number of offers since then before deciding that Colangelo and his group give the club the best chance to succeed.

“The decision in choosing the right owners was not an easy one,” said NBL’s executive chairman Larry Kestelman in a statement. “I would like, in particular, to thank LaMelo Ball and his organization for the support and interest shown in wanting to achieve the best outcome for the team that has helped him have a chance at being the number one NBA Draft pick.”

“We hope we can explore future opportunities with LaMelo and wish him all the best for the NBA Draft in October and his ambition to be the best ever player in the game,” he added.

After deciding to skip college, LaMelo Ball joined Hawks for the 2019/20 NBL season. He ended up playing 12 games with the team, averaging 17 points, 7.4 rebounds and 6.8 assists per game, while also winning NBL Rookie of the Year award in the process. Ball left the Hawks in January, returning to the U.S. in order to prepare for the 2020 NBA Draft.

LaMelo Ball, potential No.1 pick in 2020 NBA Draft, and his manager Jermaine Jackson bought the Illawarra Hawks of Australian NBL. Ball spent the previous season playing with Hawks, after deciding to skip college.

According to ESPN, Ball and Jackson decided to buy the Hawks after the club faced financial difficulties. The financial terms of the transaction remained undisclosed.

“We own the team,” Jackson told ESPN. “It’s a done deal.”

According to Jackson, Ball has connected with the Illawarra fans and community during his time there and felt at home. When the 18-year-old heard the team is in trouble, he reached out to Jackson to see if something can be done to help. After talking about the situation, the two of them made the decision to simply buy the Hawks.

The purchase, however, is still to be confirmed by NBL. While the league acknowledged that Ball and Jackson are interested parties, it stated that they own the Hawks’ license, and no transfer request has been officially made.

LaMelo Ball played 12 games with Illawarra Hawks and had a strong showing by averaging 17.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 7.0 assists per game. Thanks to his performances in NBL, Ball has climbed the prospect rankings and established himself as a top-five pick in the upcoming NBA Draft.
