Liverpool’s unbeaten run at Anfield has come to an unceremonious end. The reigning Premier League champions suffered a shocking 0-1 loss to Burnley on Thursday night, which was their first at home field in almost four years.

Liverpool’s last home loss prior to this came in April 2017 against Crystal Palace. Since then, Jurgen Klopp’s squad played an impressive 68 matches without suffering a defeat.

The run was expected to stretch to 69 games because Burnley was in pretty bad shape. They were sitting in the bottom three of the Premier League table and had three losses in their last four games.

But Liverpool also wasn’t in great form, and it showed. They had 27 shots on goal, but only six were on target, and none found their way to the net.

Burnley, on the other hand, was focused on protecting their goal and waiting for a chance of their own. They had only six shots in total while holding the possession 28 percent of the time.

Their opponent’s statistical dominance didn’t matter much, as Burnley was the first one to score. The referee pointed to the spot in the 83rd minute, and Ashley Barnes was calm under pressure to give his team the lead.

Liverpool tried to respond but didn’t manage to find a solution for Burnley’s defense and had to endure their fourth straight scoreless outing.

The win managed to lift Burnley to No. 16 in the Premier League and outside the relegation zone.

Liverpool, on the other hand, is fourth with six points behind the leading Manchester United.

“If I sit now here, losing against Burnley and didn’t score for the last four games and talk about the title race, how silly that would be?”, said Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and perfectly summed the frustration his team is facing lately.

After Liverpool’s 4-0 midweek win over Crystal Palace, the Reds knew that they could clinch their Premier League title with a win in a visit to second-place Manchester City next week.

What they might not have expected, however, was for City to lose on Thursday night to Chelsea, which went ahead and wrapped up their first ever Premier League title ahead of time.

Manchester City dropped its match in London on Thursday night by a 2-1 final score, which was enough to clinch the title for the Reds. Their English league championship is their first since 1990, before the creation of the current Premier League top flight.

Despite social distancing measures enacted due to the ongoing pandemic, fans gathered outside of Anfield to celebrate their long-awaited trophy. The lack of a Premier League title had long been a sore spot for one of Europe’s top soccer sides.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was elated at his team’s Premier League title, but also stated that he hopes that the team’s run of success won’t stop after this year’s trophy and last year’s Champions League trophy.

In the midst of the celebration, Klopp remarked of his team, “The consistency is so incredible, I cannot describe it. We will not stop — we will stay focused. We see the opportunity. Not stopping does not mean we will win everything, we just want to improve.”

Now, Liverpool has seven matches left in the season to aim to break the all-time Premier League points record of 100 points held by Manchester City.
