It appears that Luciano Acosta won’t swap MLS with Europe after all. Instead, former D.C. United playmaker is heading to Mexico.

Liga MX side Atlas announced on Thursday that they have signed Acosta to a contract. The team failed to disclose further details besides the fact that the 25-year-old Argentinian will join them on January 1st, 2020.

Acosta’s contract with D.C. United expired following the end of 2019 MLS season, and it appeared that he might stay in the United States if he doesn’t find a club in Europe. Several teams from the Western Conference reached out to the player but failed to make him an enticing offer.

Luciano Acosta initially joined D.C. United on loan in 2016, before the club made the move permanent in 2017. During his four years in MLS, Acosta made 126 appearances and contributed with 24 goals and 35 assists. He was selected in the MLS Best XI team in 2018.

Following the 2018 MLS season, Acosta was on the verge of joining Ligue 1 powerhouse Paris Saint-Germain. D.C. United reportedly accepted the offer worth around $10 million, but the transfer broke down for unspecified reasons.
