The Arizona Diamondbacks have officially moved on from veteran lefty Madison Bumgarner. The team designated Bumgarner for assignment last week, and he now becomes a free agent after clearing waivers.

By making this move, the Diamondbacks have decided to swallow up $34.4 million in guaranteed salary that Bumgarner was due to receive. The 33-year-old, on the other hand, can now sign with any team of his choosing.

Arizona signed Bumgarner ahead of the 2020 MLB season, giving him a five-year, $85 million contract. At the time, the franchise hoped the four-time All-Star would bring much-needed consistency to their rotation. However, it’s safe to say things didn’t work out nearly as well as the Diamondbacks envisioned.

In his first season in Arizona, Bumgarner had a career-worst 6.58 ERA while going 1-4. He was solid in the following two seasons before seeing his ERA crater once again to start 2023. In four starts, he had a 10.26 ERA with only 10 strikeouts and a 0-3 record.

Despite the struggles he had in recent years, there is no doubt that a team might give Madison Bumgarner another chance. During his time with the San Francisco Giants, he helped the franchise to three World Series wins while winning World Series MVP honors in 2014. His career stats include a 134–124 record, 3.47 ERA, and 2,070 strikeouts.

The Arizona Diamondbacks’ star offseason signing got off to a rough start to the 2020 season, and it appears that back problems may have been the reason why he struggled.

After yet another disastrous outing on Sunday, the Diamondbacks placed Madison Bumgarner on the 10-day injured list with a back strain.

Bumgarner, who compiled an inflated 9.35 ERA in his first four starts for Arizona, had trouble reaching the fastball velocity that helped him become one of baseball’s best starters during the past decade. During his Sunday start against the Padres, which saw him give up six runs in only two innings, he barely registered 86 miles per hour on the radar gun.

It appears that the big lefty’s struggles had something to do with this injury, which he apparently tried to pitch through at the beginning of the season. After Bumgarner’s lack of effectiveness became apparent, his team was left with no other option but to give him a rest.

The start of Bumgarner’s five-year, $85 million contract has been inconspicuous, but he will have plenty of time to right the ship after he gets healthy again.

The Diamondbacks called up right-handed pitcher Jeremy Beasley to replace Bumgarner on the roster.

Arizona Diamondbacks have got themselves a starting pitcher this offseason. According to The Athletic, D-Backs reached a deal with former San Francisco Giants’ left-hander Madison Bumgarner.

MLB Network insider Ken Rosenthal reports that Bumgarner will ink a five-year deal worth $85 million. As part of the deal, $15 million will be deferred.

Bumgarner struggled with injuries in 2017 and 2018 but bounced back with a solid season in 2019. The 30-year-old played NL-most 34 games by a pitcher and posted 9-9 record. He had a 3.90 ERA and 203 strikeouts.

There was a big market for Madison Bumgarner this offseason, with multiple teams pursuing his signature. Washington Nationals viewed him as a backup in case they couldn’t get Stephen Strasburg back, while LA Dodgers and Los Angeles Angels also made compelling cases. Still, Bumgarner preferred going to Arizona and ended up focusing on Diamondbacks.

During his time in San Francisco, Bumgarner won three World Series and had four All-Star appearances. He was NLCS MVP and World Series MVP in 2014.

With the San Francisco Giants seven games under .500 and in last place in the NL West, it seems that the franchise has decided to start shopping some of their most valuable veteran players.

According to reports, it appears that one of the players that the Giants will look to move before the July 31st trade deadline is franchise icon Madison Bumgarner.

Bumgarner, who is in the final season of his current contract, could be acquired as a short-term “rental” by several contending teams that are looking to upgrade their starting pitching in preparation for the playoffs.

The surly lefty is one of the most decorated players in the history of the Giants franchise. He has compiled a 115-90 record with a career 3.10 ERA and 1,706 strikeouts during his time in SF.

In addition, Bumgarner is one of the best playoff pitchers of all time. He was named the World Series MVP in 2014 after a sensational series against the Kansas City Royals and is the owner of a stunning 0.25 career ERA in three career World Series appearances.

This postseason pedigree makes Bumgarner an even more attractive option despite his 2019 struggles. It has been reported that the Atlanta Braves, Minnesota Twins, and the Houston Astros are potential destinations for the left-hander.

The Giants will have until July 31st to trade Bumgarner in a non-waiver deal.
