The Washington Commanders could change their name once again. The possibility was confirmed by basketball legend Magic Johnson, who is part of the franchise’s new ownership group led by Josh Harris.

Johnson recently had an interview with NBC’s Today in which he discussed his new role as an NFL team co-owner and was asked whether the Commanders will undergo another name change in the future.

“Everything’s on the table, right? Especially after this year. We’ll see where we are with the name,” said Johnson. “… We’re going to spend this year understanding what we have in place. … The name of the team will come up eventually.”

The franchise decided to drop its racially insensitive nickname “Redskins” back in 2019. They played as the Washington Football Team for two seasons before adopting the Commanders’ moniker ahead of the 2022 season.

The Washington fanbase never seemed to have warmed up to the new name, and there were immediately loud calls for change. Some fans now hope that the new ownership might be more open to that.

Harris, who is the franchise’s controlling owner, also confirmed that the team’s name would be up for discussion but said that there are more important things the new ownership has to address, like the upcoming season, improving fan experience, and being a bigger community presence.

“We’re going to look at everything and see where we are, but those are our three priorities now,” Harris concluded in a recent interview.

Hall of Famer Magic Johnson is looking to expand his business empire to NFL. According to Liz Hoffman of Semafor, Johnson is currently in talks to buy a part of the Las Vegas Raiders.

Johnson would reportedly become a minority owner and is already assembling a team of investors that would follow him into this new venture. The price Johnson is willing to pay for the piece of the Raiders is expected to “set a record valuation for the sports franchise.“

On the other hand, ESPN’s Josina Anderson reports that Johnson is involved with a group that has been looking to invest in the Raiders since 2021.

The estimated value of the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022 was $4.08 billion, according to sports business outlet Sportico. However, team owner Mark Davis revealed earlier this year that he had a minority stake offer that would set a value of $6.5 billion on the Raiders.

Investing in sports franchises is nothing new for Magic Johnson. He owns a stake in the Los Angeles Dodgers while also being part of ownership groups for the Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA and MLS franchise LAFC. Johnson’s portfolio also includes investments in Burger King, Pepsi, and Starbucks.

After her father Jerry Buss passed away in 2013, it was up to Jeanie Buss to rebuild this great NBA franchise. While the team has not won an NBA ring since 2010, Lakers’ legend Magic Johnson expressed his support for Jeanie Buss’s leadership.

“Jeanie Buss, our ultimate leader. You have to give her a lot of credit. She was put in a tough situation, especially when I left. And then had to make a tough decision on Coach Walton, and she made that decision. She’s really stepped up and for the fans, she wants to win a championship. And I want to see her be this woman standing on stage, receiving the NBA championship trophy (as) her father did. That would be awesome,” Johnson explained in an interview with CBSLA Sports Central.

This is the fourth decade that the Lakers have been under Buss family leadership. Jerry Buss first bought the franchise in 1979, since which the Lakers have won 10 NBA Championships. While none of these titles came under Jeanie’s ownership, she has nonetheless rebuilt the team as a force to be reckoned with.

In 2018, LeBron James was lured to the Lakers in what was one of the biggest moves of that off-season. While he was unable to guide the Lakers to a playoff spot due to injury, the arrival of defensive powerhouse Anthony Davis just one year later further reinforced this prestigious team. Now, with LeBron and Davis working together, the Lakers have returned to their winning ways and look more likely than ever to clinch the coveted NBA title, all thanks to Jeanie’s decisive decision-making.

Russell Westbrook only needed two games to start flashing on triple-doubles with Houston Rockets. In Rockets’ 126-123 win over New Orleans Pelicans over the weekend, Westbrook posted a stat line of 28 points, 13 assists, and 10 rebounds which handed him his 139th career triple-double.

Besides being his first in Rockets’ jersey, this triple-double was also crucial for Westbrook for one more reason. It propelled him past Los Angeles Lakers’ legend Magic Johnson to the second place on All-Time Triple-Double List.

“I know nowadays, getting a triple-double seems normal, but I take a pride, a lot of energy, a lot of sacrifice, a lot of things I do off the floor to prepare myself to be able to compete every single night and play at a high level,” – said Westbrook after the game. “For me, that’s a great accomplishment, especially growing up never thinking I’d play in the NBA. Now, I’ll be in the history books.”

Johnson later congratulated Westbrook for this feat on social media.

Russell Westbrook, who averaged a triple-double in the past two seasons, is now behind Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson. During his 14 seasons in NBA, Robertson put up 181 triple-doubles.

There was a lot of controversy about Westbrook’s triple-doubles over the years, as certain analysts and members of the media have accused the 30-year-old All-Star off stats padding. According to them, he is pumping up his rebound numbers by taking uncontested boards.

However, the numbers show the real nature of his triple-doubles. In games where Westbrook had a triple-double, his teams have 111-28 record.
