The Minnesota Wild have signed forward Marcus Foligno to a new deal and avoided the risk of losing him in free agency after the 2020-21 NHL season.

According to the team’s announcement, Foligno inked a three-year extension that will keep him in a Wild jersey through 2023-24. The 29-year-old player is set to earn $9.3 million over the course of the deal.

Foglio had a career-season in 2019-20, managing to score 11 goals while dishing 14 assists in just 59 regular-season games. He is also an important leader for the team both on ice and in the locker room, which is another reason why the Wild wants to keep him around as much as possible.

“He is a leader. He’s a big personality. He’s one of the guys who keeps our room loose,” said the team’s general manager Bill Guerin. “But he also has the ability to hold guys’ hands to the fire.”

On Foglio’s part, he wanted to stay with the Wild because he believes the team is trending in the right direction despite an early playoff exit last season.

“I believe that we are headed in that direction where we’re going to be a contending team,” said Foligno after signing the deal. “I’m excited about the players we have and just the group that we have.”

Marcus Foligno spent the early part of his career with the Buffalo Sabres, joining Minnesota in 2017 as part of the Marco Scandella trade. He has 565 career NHL games in which he scored 75 goals and dished 108 assists for a total of 183 points.
