German striker Mario Gomez, best known for his prolific stint with Bundesliga giant Bayern Munich, is retiring from professional soccer. Gomez made the news official on Sunday, after playing the last game of the season with Stuttgart.

Gomez previously indicated that the 2019/20 season will be his last as he tries to help his boyhood club to return to Bundesliga. The 34-year-old ended up achieving his goal, as Stuttgart finished second in 2.Bundesliga and secured a promotion next season.

“It was my last mission for Stuttgart after we messed up last year,” said Gomez.

Gomez started his professional career with Stuttgart and scored 110 goals in two separate stints with the club. He was also one of the most prominent members of Stuttgart’s Bundesliga-winning team in 2006/07.

“I’m very grateful for the time I had at Stuttgart,” Gomez added. “It was always my biggest dream to give something back and to end my career that I couldn’t have imagined here.”

Besides Stuttgart, Mario Gomez also left a significant mark with German powerhouse Bayern Munich. In just four years with Bayern, Gomez scored 113 goals while leading the club to two Bundesliga titles and UEFA Champions League trophy among other achievements. He also played with Fiorentina, Besiktas, and VfL Wolfsburg.

Gomez was also successful with Germany’s international team, scoring 31 times in 78 appearances.
