It was smooth sailing for Rafael Nadal as he cruised past top-ranked men’s singles player Novak Djokovic to win the Italian Open crown on Sunday.

Nadal defeated Djokovic 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 in Rome to win his second straight title at the clay court event. It was easy going for Nadal in what was an atypically poor performance by Djokovic.

It was the 54th time that Nadal and Djokovic had faced off in an ATP Tour event, and the Spaniard got the best of the Serbian this time. In fact, with his 6-0 win over Djokovic in the first set, Nadal achieved the first ever ¨bagel set¨of his career against his long-time rival.

This Italian Open win is the ninth of Nadal’s storied career. It helped him get over a hump in which he had seen himself fall in the semi-finals of three consecutive clay court tournaments, which are usually his specialty.

The Italian Open is often considered a ¨warm up¨ for the clay-court Grand Slam tournament French Open, which begins this weekend. Nadal will look to repeat at Roland Garros after his win in the tournament last season.

This victory in Rome gives him much-needed confidence before his title defense begins in Paris on May 26th.

It was another day, another tournament championship for Novak Djokovic in Madrid on Sunday.

The world’s number 1 player had little trouble taking care of Stefanos Tsitsipas in the tournament final to claim the third Madrid Open title of his career.

Djokovic took advantage of his lack of fatigue in a hot afternoon in Spain to beat Tsitsipas, who appeared to be wary and out of gas after a semi-final victory over Rafael Nadal.

Djokovic, the undisputed best men’s singles player on Earth at the moment, took the title in straight sets. He vanquished his Greek opponent by a 6-3, 6-4 final line.

The Serbian’s win gives him a comfortable lead in the standings of the ATP World Tour.

Djokovic spoke after the final about how the win was important for his confidence. Despite his status as the world’s best player, Djokovic had entered into a mini-slump after winning the Australian Open. He didn’t advance past the quarter-finals of any of the three events in which he participated after that victory.

The win was the 74th of Djokovic’s career on the ATP Tour. He left no doubt as to who the best player in the Madrid Open was, and took home the title as the reward for a solid performance.

Sunday’s Australian Open Final between Novak Djokovic pitted the #1 and #2 players in the world against one another, but there was no doubt as to who the top player in the world is after Djokovic’s resounding win.

The Serbian won his 15th Grand Slam title and his 7th Australian Open in dominating fashion by sweeping #2 ranked Rafael Nadal in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3.

Djokovic spoke of being “in the zone” during the final on Sunday, and it was evident that Nadal stood no chance. The Spaniard could only watch as Djokovic controlled the match during nearly 2 hours.

Nadal tried his hardest to get his shots past Djokovic, but the Serbian’s defensive game was flawless. Known as the best returner in the world, Djokovic matched the Spaniard shot for shot and took advantage of every minuscule error that his outclassed opponent made.

The Australian Open title is Djokovic’s third consecutive men’s singles Grand Slam championship. He closed out 2018 by winning at both Wimbledon and the US Open.

On Sunday, another piece of hardware was added to Djokovic’s trophy case as he left no doubt about who is currently the best men’s tennis player in the world.

The first major upset of the men’s singles portion of the Australian Open happened on Sunday with Roger Federer bowing out to 20-year-old Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Federer, ranked #3 in the world and the defending champion of the tournament, lost a long, drawn-out match in which he was worn out by the rising Greek star.

The Swiss tennis legend admitted that Tsitsipas, 17 years his junior, took advantage of his lack of stamina. The match lasted nearly 4 hours on a warm Melbourne evening.

The game was full of tension and sets that went to extra games, with the final result ending up as a 6-7 (110), 7-6 (3), 7-5, 7-6 (5) win for Tsitsipas.

Federer, the winner of 20 career Grand Slam singles titles, including 6 at the Australian Open, exited in the Round of 16 for the first time in Melbourne for the first time since 2003.

Despite an unrivaled run of dominance that has lasted for the better part of two decades, Federer seems to be slowing down a bit as he nears 40 years old.

Tsitsipas’s win on Sunday also signifies a changing of the guard in the tennis world, with the young Greek player showing that he will be a force to reckon with in the years to come.
