German star midfielder Mesut Ozil will continue his soccer career in Turkey. Ozil agreed to a contract termination with Arsenal over the weekend and decided to sign with Super Lig side Fenerbahce.

The club confirmed the news on social media, stating on Sunday that Ozil arrived in Turkey to “continue the transfer processes.”

Ozil has been out of favor with Arsenal for the past six months and was considering several offers in recent weeks. MLS side D.C. United reportedly made a strong offer to the 32-year-old star, but he ended up favoring the move to Turkey.

“I am a Fenerbahce fan. That is why I am very happy to be coming to Turkey with Fenerbahce,” said Ozil in a chat with Turkish media. “I’m very excited.”

Mesut Ozil arrived at Arsenal in 2013 and was one of the club’s most important players for years. He helped the club win three FA Cups while also serving as captain on multiple occasions.

However, Ozil saw his playing time decrease following the departure of Arsenal’s longtime-manager Arsene Wenger. He often clashed with Unai Emery while also failing to be on good terms with Emery’s successor, Mikel Arteta.

This resulted in Ozil failing to make a single appearance for the Gunners since last March, with Arteta deciding not to register him for any competition in 2020-21.

Ozil will leave Arsenal with 254 games to his name in which he scored 44 goals and dished 77 assists.
