The top free agent catcher left on the market has agreed to a 1-year, $18.25 million deal with the Milwaukee Brewers.

The reigning NL Central champions were looking for an upgrade behind the plate after disappointing production at the position last year, and Grandal will certainly help them to improve.

Grandal, a 7-year MLB veteran, is highly-rated both offensively and defensively.

The 30-year-old backstop has spent the majority of his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Despite a relatively low .240 career batting average, he is renowned for his power and ability to draw walks at the plate.

In fact, Grandal as been the third-best hitting catcher in MLB over the past five seasons according to the OPS metric (.792).

The Cuba native’s decision to sign with Milwaukee is surprising to some.

Grandal previously turned down a four-year contract with the New York Mets for over $50 million dollars because of his desire to sign a shorter contract, according to multiple reports.

Grandal will immediately slot in as the Brewers’ starting catcher. Milwaukee will hope that he continues to be one of baseball’s best catchers, and that he will lead them back to the playoffs again in 2019.

Milwaukee Brewers announced on Sunday that they have acquired second baseman/infielder Brad Miller from Tampa Bay Rays. Brewers will also receive $2.2 million cash consideration from the Rays while sending first baseman/outfielder Ji-Man Choi in the opposite direction.

Upon joining the Brewers, Miller was optioned to the team’s Triple-A affiliate, Colorado Springs Sky Sox.

“At this point we thought that the positional versatility and the infield experience that Miller brings would be helpful,” – said Brewers general manager David Stearns of team’s newest acquisition. “He will head to Triple-A, and when we have a need, I’m sure he will be ready to contribute.”

Tampa Bay Rays made Brad Miller designated for assignment on Thursday, although the 28-year-old had a batting average of .256 alongside 5 home runs and 21 RBI’s in 48 games played. Rays decided to part ways with the player in order to open a roster spot for the first baseman Jake Bauers, who previously spent some time with team’s Triple-A affiliate, Durham Bulls.

Ji-Man Choi, who joined the Brewers at the beginning of the year after previously playing for New York Yankees, has seen action sporadically in the 2018 season. He played in 12 games this season, having .233 batting average with 2 home runs and 5 RBIs.
