In the previous months, both the Chicago Bears organization and quarterback Mitchell Trubisky publicly expressed interest in working out a deal that would keep them together past the 2020 NFL season. But privately, it appears that the two sides have already made peace with a break-up.

ESPN’s David Kaplan recently reported that the people close to Trubisky told him that the 26-year-old signal-caller has “zero interest” in being in Chicago next season. Kaplan added that his sources within the organization also feel the same way about the North Carolina product.

Trubisky will hit the free-agent market this offseason after the Bears decided not to pick up his fifth-year option. It is unclear whether he will attract much interest there, but there most likely should be a team willing to take a gamble.

Since being selected with the No. 2 pick in 2017, Mitchell Trubisky had seen plenty of highs and lows as a member of the Chicago Bears. He led the team to the NFC North title in his sophomore year but followed that up with an 8-8 campaign in 2019 that saw the Bears miss the playoffs.

Trubisky also had a challenging 2020, being benched after three games only to retake his place under center in Week 12 and push Chicago to the postseason. He was 6-3 as a starter and finished the regular season with 2,055 yards, 16 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.

The Chicago Bears, on the other hand, have already been working on getting a new quarterback. After failing to acquire Matthew Stafford, the team is now reportedly pursuing the Philadelphia Eagles’ Carson Wentz as their primary target.

The arrival of Nick Foles made many people think that Mitch Trubisky’s time as Chicago Bears’ starting quarterback has come to an end. However, it appears that Trubisky will get another chance to prove himself.

According to several reports, the Bears decided to make Trubisky the starter for the season opener against Detroit Lions.

Trubisky and Foles competed for the starting position during training camp, but neither QB managed to impress in recent weeks. That made head coach Matt Nagy go with the familiar.

“It is not easy,” said Nagy earlier this week. “It’s not clear-cut.”

Mitchell Trubisky, who was 2017’s No. 2 pick, is entering the most important season in his career. So far, Trubisky failed to make an argument that he’s a franchise quarterback having too many ups and downs.

After a troubling rookie season, Trubisky showed promise in his sophomore year, going 11-3 in 14 games he played and earning a Pro Bowl nod. However, 2019 as him making a step back, as he struggled to be consistent, which ultimately caused the Bears to miss the playoffs.

If he wants to keep his job, the 26-year-old quarterback will have to have a strong start in 2020 and keep his production high. Failing to do so will most likely see Foles taking over and Trubisky probably being done with running the Bears’ offense.
