The Pittsburgh Steelers are using the back end of the offseason to sort out their quarterback room. After bringing back third-string QB Mason Rudolph on a one-year deal earlier this week, the Steelers also handed out a new contract to backup Mitch Trubisky.

According to the official team announcement, Trubisky inked a new three-year deal that will keep him with the franchise through 2025. Trubisky previously had one year left on a two-year, $ $14.25 million contract he signed ahead of the 2022 season.

The Steelers haven’t disclosed the financial terms of Trubisky’s new deal, but NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that he’ll earn $19.4 million across three years. If he meets certain incentives, like playing time, the value of the contract can max out at $33 million.

Mitch Trubisky signed with the Steelers last offseason after spending one year as Josh Allen’s backup with the Buffalo Bills. Trubisky then beat Rudolph and 2022’s first-round pick Kenny Pickett to win the starting job.

The Steelers struggled on offense to start the campaign, promising head coach  Mike Tomlin to bench Trubisky in favor of Pickett in Week 4. Trubisky spent the rest of the season as a backup but got to start one more game down the stretch due to Pickett’s injury.

Trubisky finished 2022 with a 2-3 record as a starter, having thrown for 1,252 yards, four touchdowns, and five interceptions.

The Pittsburgh Steelers will have veteran Mitch Trubisky as their starting quarterback once again this season. With rookie Kenny Pickett in concussion protocol, the Steelers announced that Trubinsky would take over under center for the upcoming game against the Carolina Panthers.

Trubisky, second overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, signed with the Steelers on a two-year deal in the offseason. The North Carolina product was named Week 1 starter but failed to do enough to keep the job. He was benched midway through the Week 4 game against the New York Jets for Pickett and never managed to get his job back.

â€śI’m looking forward to the opportunity,” Trubisky said after the decision was made public. “I’ll be ready to go. I feel like I had a good week of practice. I’m ready to bounce back.”

The news is somewhat a surprise since it seemed that the Steelers might lean towards third-string QB Mason Rudolph to start against the Panthers. Rudolph will become a free agent after the season, and it would make sense for Pittsburgh to get another look at him in game action before making a decision. The 27-year-old even got endorsed by wideout Diontae Johnson earlier in the week, but that didn’t seem to help much.

The Steelers are currently 5-8 and have all but lost their chances to make the playoffs.

The Pittsburgh Steelers needed three and a half games to lose their patience with their starting quarterback Mitch Trubisky. After another poor performance, Trubisky was benched at the halftime of the Week 4 game against the New York Jets, with rookie Kenny Pickett taking command of Pittsburgh’s offense.

The Steelers decided to leave Trubisky on the sidelines after he completed only 53.8% of his passes while throwing for 84 yards and an interception in the first half. Picket checked in for the third quarter and managed to spark a comeback that turned a 10-6 deficit at the half into a 10-20 lead early in the fourth quarter. The Pitt product had two touchdowns, both of which he scored using his legs.

However, things turned sour for Pickett towards the end of the game. He ended up throwing two interceptions, on top of one early in the third, and essentially allowed the Jets to produce a comeback of their own and win the game. The rookie finished the game with 120 passing yards, two rushing TDs, three interceptions, and a fumble.

“We needed a spark,” said Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin after the game. “We didn’t do much in the first half, not enough offensively, and thought he could provide a spark for us.”

On the other hand, Trubisky was disappointed with the way he was pulled out of the game.

“It’s a tough deal,” he told the reporters. “It’s definitely not what I wanted, not what I expected. But it’s part of it.”

The Steelers are 1-3 to start the season but have the toughest part of the schedule ahead of them. Their next four opponents are the Buffalo Bulls, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Miami Dolphins, and the Philadelphia Eagles.

In the previous months, both the Chicago Bears organization and quarterback Mitchell Trubisky publicly expressed interest in working out a deal that would keep them together past the 2020 NFL season. But privately, it appears that the two sides have already made peace with a break-up.

ESPN’s David Kaplan recently reported that the people close to Trubisky told him that the 26-year-old signal-caller has “zero interest” in being in Chicago next season. Kaplan added that his sources within the organization also feel the same way about the North Carolina product.

Trubisky will hit the free-agent market this offseason after the Bears decided not to pick up his fifth-year option. It is unclear whether he will attract much interest there, but there most likely should be a team willing to take a gamble.

Since being selected with the No. 2 pick in 2017, Mitchell Trubisky had seen plenty of highs and lows as a member of the Chicago Bears. He led the team to the NFC North title in his sophomore year but followed that up with an 8-8 campaign in 2019 that saw the Bears miss the playoffs.

Trubisky also had a challenging 2020, being benched after three games only to retake his place under center in Week 12 and push Chicago to the postseason. He was 6-3 as a starter and finished the regular season with 2,055 yards, 16 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.

The Chicago Bears, on the other hand, have already been working on getting a new quarterback. After failing to acquire Matthew Stafford, the team is now reportedly pursuing the Philadelphia Eagles’ Carson Wentz as their primary target.

According to rumors around the league, the only way that the Chicago Bears embattled quarterback Mitch Trubisky would be able to save his job would be by making a deep run in the playoffs.

That didn’t happen, with the New Orleans Saints easily cruising to a 21-9 win over the Bears in their Super Wild-Card matchup on Sunday.

Earlier in the season, Trubisky was benched in Week 3 after a slow start leading the offense. The team was handed over to journeyman quarterback Nick Foles, who quickly showed that he was not the answer at quarterback either.

Trubisky then got his job back in Week 12 and showed significant improvement in his play at the end of the regular season. However, reports claimed that the improvement he showed wouldn’t be enough to save his job unless he led a deep playoff run.

The New Orleans Saints and their veteran quarterback Drew Brees made sure that wasn’t going to happen. Brees threw two touchdown passes and star running back Alvin Kamara ran in another one to give the Saints an easy 21-9 win.

Trubisky went 19 of 29 for 199 yards and threw one touchdown at the end of the game that was completely inconsequential as the Saints had already secured the victory. The Bears were also poor in the running game, managing only 48 yards from scrimmage on the ground.

The Saints will face Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the next round, a team that they have already beaten twice this year.

The Bears will have a very important offseason ahead of them in which they will have to decide whether they are going to give Trubisky another shot or move on from him and find another quarterback.

The arrival of Nick Foles made many people think that Mitch Trubisky’s time as Chicago Bears’ starting quarterback has come to an end. However, it appears that Trubisky will get another chance to prove himself.

According to several reports, the Bears decided to make Trubisky the starter for the season opener against Detroit Lions.

Trubisky and Foles competed for the starting position during training camp, but neither QB managed to impress in recent weeks. That made head coach Matt Nagy go with the familiar.

“It is not easy,” said Nagy earlier this week. “It’s not clear-cut.”

Mitchell Trubisky, who was 2017’s No. 2 pick, is entering the most important season in his career. So far, Trubisky failed to make an argument that he’s a franchise quarterback having too many ups and downs.

After a troubling rookie season, Trubisky showed promise in his sophomore year, going 11-3 in 14 games he played and earning a Pro Bowl nod. However, 2019 as him making a step back, as he struggled to be consistent, which ultimately caused the Bears to miss the playoffs.

If he wants to keep his job, the 26-year-old quarterback will have to have a strong start in 2020 and keep his production high. Failing to do so will most likely see Foles taking over and Trubisky probably being done with running the Bears’ offense.
