The post Ronald Acuña Jr. Becomes 3rd Player 21 and Under to Hit 40 Home Runs in a Season appeared first on yoursportspot.com.
]]>The dynamic outfielder slugged his 40th home run of the season in the Braves’ 5-4 matinee win over the Phillies on Thursday, becoming the third player in the history of baseball to achieve that feat at the age of 21 or younger.
The 21-year-old hammered an inside 0-2 fastball from Philadelphia starter Aaron Nola deep to left field, joining former Braves third baseman Eddie Matthews and former Giants right fielder Mel Ott as the third player to ever eclipse the 40 home run barrier before his 22nd birthday.
He is also the first player to accomplish the feat in 66 years, as Matthews was the last to do so back in 1953.
When told of his feat, the outfielder said, “It feels incredible. To be compared to superstars and Hall of Famers like that, especially at such a young age, wow.”
The 2019 NL All-Star Game starter in center field is batting .279 with 40 home runs, 99 RBI, and 123 runs scored in a fantastic sophomore campaign.
He’ll look to add to his growing legend with the Braves in this year’s MLB postseason.

]]>After hitting for the cycle for the first time in his career on April 25, 2017, against the Colorado Rockies, he repeated the same feat against the same team on Tuesday night at Nationals Park.
Turner got arguably the most difficult step out of the way first, slamming a leadoff home run off of Rockies starter Peter Lambert to give his team a 1-0 lead.
He then rapped an infield single off of Lambert the next inning to accomplish half of the feat.
The next trick in his book was a leadoff fifth-inning triple, which was no problem for the talented shortstop given his impressive speed.
Finally, in the seventh inning, Turner smacked an RBI double off of reliever Jairo Díaz to give his team a 9-1 lead and complete his second career cycle.
Turner is only the 26th player in MLB history to hit for the cycle twice. He finished the night 4-5 with 3 RBIs, continuing what has been a strong season for him.
The Nationals took an 11-1 triumph over Colorado on Tuesday, moving to within 5.5 games of the division-leading Atlanta Braves in the standings.

]]>Mike Fiers, the Oakland A’s veteran righty, tossed nine innings without allowing a hit against Cincinnati. That, in and of itself, is a rare feat.
When you consider the circumstances, the story gets even more improbable.
The game between the Athletics and Reds took place at the Oakland Coliseum, a derelict and aging stadium. Some of the lights in the stadium wouldn’t turn on, so a delay lasting 98 minutes delayed the first pitch.
The game that was supposed to begin at 7:07 PM local time instead began at 8:45 PM.
Two hours and 25 minutes later, at 11.15 PM, Fiers and his teammates celebrated after he tossed nine no-hit innings.
Fiers totaled 6 strikeouts and 2 walks in his masterful outing. Not many could’ve expected a performance like this going into the game, however, as Fiers was the owner of a 6.81 ERA after his first eight start of the year.
Fiers was also helped by an amazing catch by Ramón Laureano in the sixth inning, who robbed Joey Votto of a home run.
The no-hitter was the second of Fiers’ career. He also completed the impressive feat in the 2015 season as a member of the Houston Astros.

]]>The veteran lefty took the mound for the Yankees at Chase Field in Phoenix, needing 3 strikeouts to reach 3,000 in his career. Sabathia, who announced last offseason that the 2019 season would be his last, was well within reach of yet another career milestone.
After striking out the first two batters of the 2nd inning, Sabathia allowed a home run and a walk. Then, former Yankee teammate John Ryan Murphy stepped to the plate.
The 38-year-old went up 1-2 in the count against Murphy and then struck him out with a beautiful diving changeup like so many others that he’s thrown in his career. A historic moment was in the books.
Sabathia became only the 17th pitcher in the history of the MLB to strike out 3,000 batters in a career. He is the first to reach the milestone since the Atlanta Braves’ John Smoltz did so back in 2008.
The Vallejo, California native became only the 3rd-ever left-handed pitcher to reach the feat, joining Randy Johnson and Steve Carlton.
The sure-fire Hall of Famer finished the night with 5.1 innings pitched, 2 runs allowed, 5 strikeouts, and 2 walks as New York fell 3-1 to Arizona.
