The Arizona Diamondbacks already started making improvements to their roster after their disappointing World Series loss to the Texas Rangers. The team announced the acquisition of third baseman Eugenio Suarez, who arrives in a trade with the Seattle Mariners.

As part of the trade, the Diamondbacks are sending right-hand pitcher Carlos Vargas and veteran catcher Seby Zavala to Seattle.

Speaking with reporters about the trade, Diamondbacks’ general manager Mike Hazen said that the move will give the team more stability on third base.

“It adds a little bit of stability at that spot,” Hazen said. “He’s a guy we’ve liked for a long time.”

Suarez played in all 162 games with the Mariners this past season, batting .232 with 22 home runs and 96 RBIs. The 32-year-old player has had at least 21 homers in each season since 2016, excluding the shortened 2020 campaign.

Suarez, who was an All-Star in 2018, will fill the position of need for the Diamondbacks. Veteran Evan Longoria became a free agent, Buddy Kennedy went to the St. Louis Cardinals through waivers, and the team traded Josh Rojas ahead of the trade deadline.

The Mariners, on the other hand, get out of Suarez’s contract, which pays him $11 million in 2024, while getting two useful players in return. Vargas is still a developmental player, having played just five games in relief this season and finishing the campaign with a 5.79 ERA and seven strikeouts. Zavala, on the other hand, has a .210 career batting average with 14 home runs and 54 RBIs.

Kodai Senga has agreed to a five-year, $75 million contract with the New York Mets, multiple sources confirmed on Saturday. The 29-year-old player recently became a free agent after spending 11 seasons with the Nippon Professional Baseball team Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks.

Nicknamed “the Ghost Fork” due to his split-fingered fastball that seems to disappear before reaching the plate, Senga went 104-51 with a 2.42 ERA in 1,340⅔ innings for the Hawks. During his time in the NPB, Senga was named an NPB All-Star on three occasions and won the Japanese Series five times.

Senga’s arrival in New York will greatly assist the Mets to fill the gaps in their rotation. Other free agents who the Mets also signed to this end include American League Cy Young winner Justin Verlander, left-handed pitcher Jose Quintana, and reliever David Robertson. In addition, the team also re-signed center fielder Brandon Nimmo to an eight-year, $162 million contract.

Currently, the Mets’ payroll is worth around $345 million. If this sum holds, the Mets’ could be due to pay a luxury-tax penalty; a first in the MLB.

The Oakland Athletics and Pittsburgh Pirates agreed to a trade on Thursday afternoon, with the Bay Area squad acquiring lefty reliever Nik Turley in exchange for $60,000 cash.

The A’s have long been adept at finding unheralded arms and turning them into important bullpen pieces, and this appears to be their aim in what is a low-risk deal with the rebuilding squad.

Turley, who is 31 years old, made his Big League debut with the Twins in 2017 and then missed the next two seasons after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

He returned to the mound in 2020 with the Pirates and posted a 4.98 ERA in 25 appearances, mostly as a lefty specialist. Turley struggled with walks and hit batters as well, but he did strike out 20 batters in only 21.2 innings of work.

Turley looks to be a candidate to fill a spot in the A’s bullpen heading into the season, but will likely face competition from other lefty arms like Jake Diekman and AJ Puk for a prominent role.

The California native returns to his home state and will still be under team control for the next six seasons, setting up the A’s to potentially have an important piece in their staff for years to come if Turley can polish up his control.

The San Diego Padres have reportedly just snagged ace Blake Snell from the Tampa Bay Rays. They got him by means of a blockbuster trade involving four major prospects whom the Rays are set to receive in return.

The last time we saw Blake Snell, he was terrorizing the Los Angeles Dodgers lineup in Game 6 of the 2020 World Series. Snell was on fire, and yet he was still taken out of the game by Rays manager Kevin Cash. The decision to remove Snell from the game ultimately led to the Dodgers’ World Series victory.

But although Los Angeles won the title, no one forgot just how dominant Snell was in Game 6—which is why the Padres are likely ecstatic to get hold of him.

Snell put up a 3.24 ERA in 11 starts throughout the 2020 season and improved that number to 3.03 in the postseason.

The winner of the 2018 AL Cy Young award, Snell joins a handful of All-Stars on the Padres squad. San Diego general manager A.J. Preller clearly feels that his team is in “win-now” mode, which is why he felt comfortable trading a handful of prospects for a pitcher who can help them right now.

The two teams announced on Wednesday that they had made a four-player trade that will see right-hander Jeff Hoffman and 2020’s fourth-round pick Case Williams head to Cincinnati with veteran pitcher Robert Stephenson and minor-league outfielder Jameson Hannah making their way to Colorado.

Hoffman joins the Reds after playing 68 games (38 starts) with the Rockies in the past five years. He has a career 10-16 record with a 6.40 ERA and 197 strikeouts.

Williams played high school baseball at Douglas County HS and went 4-1 with 3.30 ERA in three seasons. He was drafted No.110 overall by the Rockies in this year’s MLB Draft.

Stephenson also has five years of MLB experience but saw slightly more playing time than Hoffman. He has 104 career games (22 starts) in the majors and boosts a 5.15 ERA with 222 strikeouts.

Hannah, on the other hand, is still waiting for his majors debut. He has two years of minors baseball under his belt, playing 133 games and posting a .275 batting average with three home runs and 47 RBIs.

The Oakland Athletics, surprise leaders of the AL West division halfway through the shortened MLB season, made a move on Monday before the MLB Trade Deadline to acquire Texas Rangers starting pitcher Mike Minor.

The A’s, the owners of a 22-12 record and a team that has the looks of a potential World Series contender, looked to upgrade one of the only weak points of its team by acquiring the veteran lefty.

Oakland will send two players to be named later as well as international slot money in exchange for the Tennessee native and cash considerations to help pay his salary.

Minor, a 2009 first round draft pick of the Atlanta Braves out of Vanderbilt University, has been a quality starter for Texas over the last three seasons after joining the club before the 2018 campaign after spending a year with the Kansas City Royals as a reliever.

He pitched to the tune of a 14-10 record with a 3.59 ERA last season, putting up numbers that he hadn’t achieved since 2013 with the Braves.

Minor has struggled so far this year, putting up a 5.60 ERA, but showed promise on Friday, pitching 6 shutout innings against one of baseball’s most potent offenses in the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The 33-year-old pitcher is expected to make his Oakland debut at some point this week.

The Colorado Rockies are still hanging around in the NL playoff race just past the halfway point of the 2020 season, which led them to make a move on Sunday for Orioles relief pitcher Mychal Givens.

Colorado, which heads into the new week with a 17-17 record and right on the edge of playoff qualification, wanted to upgrade its bullpen, which holds the third-worst ERA in the entire league at 5.81.

The Rockies are getting a version of Givens that looks much like the one that became one of the best setup men in the Major Leagues during his first few seasons. After having trouble as the team’s closer last season, Givens has excelled back in his old role this year with a 1.38 ERA and a 38% strikeout rate.

Colorado, which is missing important players like Scott Oberg and Wade Davis in its ‘pen this season, will add an important veteran arm to go along with a cast of plenty of inexperienced pitchers in its bullpen as the team looks to qualify for the playoffs for the first time since 2007.

Baltimore, in turn, has acquired Rockies prospects Tyler Nevin and Terrin Vavra as well as a player to be named later in exchange for their former star reliever.

The Chicago Cubs grabbed one of the 2019 Trade Deadline’s best available players just before the 4 pm limit on Wednesday afternoon, making a move for Tigers outfielder Nicholas Castellanos.

The Cubs shipped Minor League pitching prospects Paul Richan and Alex Lange to the Detroit Tigers in exchange for the slugging outfielder. Surprisingly, the Cubs weren’t forced to give up any of their top ten prospects in exchange for one of the game’s better right-handed power bats. It is worth remembering, however, that Castellanos is set to become a free agent after this season, making him a rental bat for the Cubs.

Castellanos hasn’t had his best season in 2019, but he’s still been solid. The South Florida native has batted .273 this season with 11 home runs and 37 RBI. He certainly hasn’t been helped by the cavernous Comerica Park where he played his home games nor by his team’s lack of offensive punch.

The Cubs were also drawn to Castellanos by his ability to play multiple positions in the field. While he is primarily a corner outfield, he also has the ability to play the corner infield positions in a pinch.

The Cubs hope that Castellanos’ bat will help lead them to an NL Central title this season.

The Atlanta Braves made a move to bolster their recently-beleagured bullpen on Tuesday, making a move for Rangers righty Chris Martin.

Atlanta’s move for Martin is a straight-up swap with the NL East leaders sending left-handed pitcher Kolby Allard to the Texas Rangers.

Despite ranking eighth in the Majors with a 4.15 bullpen ERA, it has become clear in recent weeks that the Braves are looking for bullpen help after key arms such as Anthony Swarzak and Luke Jackson have struggled.

Martin should provide just that for the Braves as a powerful right-handed arm that strikes out plenty of batters and allows few walks. Not only has he recorded a quality 3.08 ERA this season, he’s also put up a fantastic 43:4 strikeout to walk ratio in 38 innings of work this season.

The Arlington, Texas native leaves his hometown franchise after joining the Rangers back in 2018. He’s had quite a journeyman career, spending time with the Rockies and Yankees as well as in Japan.

Now, the Braves, who hold a 5.5 game lead over the Washington Nationals in the NL East, will count on Martin to give their bullpen a sorely-needed upgrade. He could even get the opportunity to serve as Atlanta’s closer, making him their most depended-upon bullpen arm.

The Milwaukee Brewers made a rare trade with a division rival on Monday in order to shore up its shaky starting rotation.

The Brewers traded minor league reliever Cody Ponce in order to acquire Jordan Lyles. This isn’t the righty starter’s first stint with the Brew Crew, as Lyles also spent the 2018 season pitching for Milwaukee.

The Brewers’ rotation is currently struggling with several injuries, as starters Brandon Woodruff, Jhoulys Chacín, and Jimmy Nelson are sidelined. Woodruff and Chacín’s statuses for the rest of the season are in question as they attempt to recover from oblique strains, while Nelson has a right elbow fluid accumulation issue that the Brewers haven’t established a timetable for.

The Pirates, currently in the midst of a nine-game skid that has left them without any chance of making this year’s playoffs, decided to sell Lyles in order to acquire a potential piece for their bullpen of the future.

Lyles hasn’t been good for the Pirates this season, allowing a 5.36 ERA and a boatload of home runs. It’s possible that the Brewers think that they can help him to make some adjustments to get him back to his 2018 form, when he posted an ERA just over 4 and helped the Brewers to an NL Central crown.

Lyles is expected to jump immediately into the team’s rotation.
