It’s no secret that the Montreal Canadiens think they have the next NHL star on their team in winger Cole Caufield. On Monday, they double down on this belief by inking the 22-year-old player to an eight-year, $63 million contract.

Caufield’s new deal will now tie him to the organization through the 2030-31 NHL season. He is now the third highest-paid Canadiens player in terms of annual salary, with $7.85 million per season.

Caufield earned his new deal with a stellar first part of the 2022-23 NHL season in which he scored 26 goals in 46 games. He then didn’t play at all since January due to shoulder surgery but still ended up being tied for most goals scored among all Canadiens players.

The structure and the value of the contract should be considered a win-win for both the player and the franchise. Caufield received a deal that is usually reserved for much more accomplished and proven players, considering he only has 123 NHL games under his belt.

Canadiens, on the other hand, are probably overpaying at the start of the contract, but if Caufield develops the way they project, the contract will be a bargain later on.

Cole Caufield was the Canadiens’ 15th overall selection in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. Over the course of his three seasons as a pro, he has 53 goals and 31 assists for a total of 84 points.

Montreal Canadiens winger Cole Caufield has been sidelined for the rest of the season after incurring an injury to his right shoulder that will require him to undergo surgery.

Caufield’s injury comes as a major setback for the Canadiens, who have been relying on him as their main source of attacking power. Caufield scored 26 goals in 46 games this season, making him Montreal’s leading scorer. He also grabbed 10 assists before his injury.

Upon first arriving in Montreal, Caufield struggled to adjust to life with the Canadiens. Under the guidance of coach Martin St. Louis, Caufield improved his form, evolving into the team’s leading scorer over the past two seasons.

The winger has become the latest in a growing list of injuries for the Canadiens. He joins forward Jonathan Drouin on the sidelines, who has been retroactively placed on injured reserve, as well as winger Juraj Slafkovsky—the top pick in last year’s draft—who remains sidelined for three months with a left knee injury.

Forward Brendan Gallagher remains unavailable until February, while star goalie Carey Price has already been confirmed to be unavailable for the entirety of the current season.

The Montreal Canadiens’ All-Star goalkeeper Carey Price might not be ready to get back on ice anytime soon. But this doesn’t mean that the 35-year-old player is ready to call the end of his NHL career.

Speaking with reporters on Monday, Price, who is currently out with a knee injury, said that he doesn’t plan to retire “right at this moment” and is just focused on getting better physically.

“We’ll have to take it step by step. I don’t have a plan to retire right at this moment,” said Price. “Right now, my goal is to just be pain-free from day to day. I’m still having some issues getting up and down stairs, and carrying my kids up and down stairs is difficult.”

Price underwent surgery after the 2020-21 NHL season, in which he helped the Canadiens reach the Stanley Cup, to address a lingering knee injury. The plan was for the seven-time All-Star to return in time to start the 2021-22 campaign, but several setbacks prolonged his return for several months. As a result, he ended up playing only five games before being shut down again.

In a recent interview with The Athletic, Price admitted that he would require another, more “intrusive” surgery if he wanted to get back on ice. However, the surgery could significantly affect the quality of his life if unsuccessful, so he isn’t sure whether he’ll get it.

Carey Price spent his entire career with the Canadiens. He played a total of 712 games in the NHL and has a 361-261-79 record. Price has a 2.51 goal against average, a .917 save percentage, and 49 career shutouts.

The Montreal Canadiens have fired head coach Claude Julien. The news was officially confirmed by the team’s general manager Marc Bergevin on Wednesday. According to Bergevin, the Canadiens also said goodbye to assistant Kirk Muller.

“I would like to sincerely thank Claude and Kirk for their contributions to our team over the past five years during which we worked together. I have great respect for these two men whom I hold in high regard,” said Bergevin announcing the decision.

Following Julien’s departure, assistant Dominique Ducharme was named the Canadiens’ interim head coach. The longtime Vancouver Canucks winger Alex Burrows is expected to join Ducharme’s staff.

Montreal’s decision to fire Claude Julien comes after a series of poor results.

The Canadiens opened the 2020-21 NHL season with a 7-3 record but then went on to win just two of the next eight games. It is believed that Julien’s fate was sealed after consecutive losses to the Ottawa Senators on Sunday and Tuesday.

Julien spent the previous four and a half years with Canadiens, leading the franchise to two postseason appearances during that period. Before that, he was the head coach of the Boston Bruins for 10 years and has a Stanley Cup win with the organization from the 2010-11 season.

The NHL strongly believes that teams from Canada will be able to play games at home in the 2020-21 season. This was confirmed to reporters on Thursday by Bill Daly, the league’s deputy commissioner.

According to Daly, the NHL recently had discussions with the provincial health authorities and managed to get clearance for the Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks, and Winnipeg Jets to compete in their home arenas.

“On the basis of our discussions in the past week, as well as our exchange of correspondence over the last 24 hours, we believe we are aligned and in agreement on the conditions on which each of our Canadian franchises can begin play in their own buildings for the start of the 2020-21 NHL season,” said Daly.

Canada has closed its borders with the United States for non-essential travelers due to the coronavirus pandemic and intends to keep it that way at least until January 21st. Although the new NHL season kicks off on January 13th, the ban won’t affect Canadian teams as they will play only against each other.

The NHL made several significant changes to their regular season format for 2020-21 to minimize the traveling and organized all teams in four divisions. Each team will only play their divisional opponents, with the format being carried over to the first two rounds of the playoffs as well.

Forward Max Domi completed a $10.6 million move to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday, after being traded by the Montreal Canadiens the previous day. His new contract, valid for two years, has an average annual value of $5.6 million.

While Domi passed up the opportunity to become a restricted free agent on October 9, will be able to become and unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2021-22 season.

The 25-year-old forward impressed during the 2019-20 season, scoring 44 points (17 goals, 27 assists) in 71 games for the Canadiens.

Domi made the following comments after completing his trade, “I never like to compare teams or organizations, but Columbus is right there and it’s a team that’s ready to win a Stanley Cup. Playing in that rink (Nationwide Arena) is something that is very difficult. It’s a challenge. It’s very loud. The fans are unbelievable. … Everyone from the organization has reached out to me. It’s been first class. I got a call from [coach John Tortorella] and [general manager Jarmo Kekalainen] right away, so it’s pretty amazing to hear, and I’m just really excited about this next chapter and next challenge. We’ve got a special group and I’m just really looking forward to being a part of it.”

In return for Domi, the Canadiens received forward Josh Anderson as well as a third-round pick (No. 78) in the 2020 NHL Draft.

The Montreal Canadiens got their return to NHL action off to an explosive start on Saturday, defeating the Pittsburgh Penguins in overtime after a tight game.

Jesperi Kotkaniemi opened the scoring for the Canadiens 11:27 minutes into the first period. At 6:53, Nick Suzuki doubled the Canadian franchise’s lead with an opportunistic wrist shot from the left face-off circle.

The second period looked as if it would remain goalless until Sidney Crosby banked a shot in off Price’s skate to put Pittsburgh on the scoreboard at 9:55. This was quickly followed by a power-play goal at 12:34 where Bryan Rust pulled Pittsburgh level.

The score remained deadlock throughout the third period, with Pittsburgh forward Conor Sheary missing a crucial penalty shot with 3:03 remaining on the clock. Once the game entered overtime, Montreal forward Jonathan Drouin also missed a penalty shot which he tried to score off a backhand.

While it seemed as if the game would end all square, Jeff Petry pulled one out of the bag with 6:03 remaining, thereby handing the Canadiens a dramatic late victory and a thrilling restart to their NHL campaign.
