The Portland Trail Blazers wrapped up a big three-year, $100 million extension with shooting guard CJ McCollum on Tuesday.

McCollum, who will turn 28 in September, is set to become Portland’s second-highest paid player behind point guard Damian Lillard. He’s been a member of the Trail Blazers franchise since the team selected him with the 10th overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft.

The Lehigh spent his first two seasons as a reserve for Portland, but then broke into the starting lineup in the 2015-16 season. He captured the league’s Most Improved Player Award after putting up a big season, averaging 20.8 points per game on 45% shooting in his breakout campaign.

The guard’s production for Portland has been consistent ever since then, as he has averaged over 20 points per game during his last four seasons with the Blazers. He forms half of a stellar backcourt attack with Damian Lillard, which has turned the team into regular Western Conference contenders in recent seasons.

Now, with his new contract, McCollum is set to stick with Portland through the end of the 2021-22 season, at least. The franchise is no doubt thrilled to keep him in the Moda Center for the foreseeable future.

The Milwaukee Bucks, who fell just short of reaching the NBA Finals after losing in the Conference Finals to the future champion Raptors last season, have added a key veteran piece to their roster as they look to challenge for the East crown once again.

The three-point specialist has signed a one-year, $2.6 million contract to serve as one of the Bucks’ key bench players.

Many speculated that the journeyman shooting guard would end up in Los Angeles to play for the Lakers with former teammate LeBron James, but the 38-year-old opted to head north to one of the NBA’s most promising, youth-centered franchises.

Korver has had a long and productive career in the NBA. He started off as a young, sharp-shooting spark plug with the Philadelphia 76ers in 2003 before spending time with the Utah Jazz, Chicago Bulls, Atlanta Hawks, and Cleveland Cavaliers, where he reached the NBA Finals in 2017 and 2018.

The Creighton alum has almost always been used as a bench player with the exception of his 2012-2017 stint with the Atlanta Hawks. The sharpshooter lived the best seasons of his career with Atlanta, making his only All-Star team in 2015.

Korver spent the majority of 2018-19 with the Utah Jazz after the Cavaliers traded him near the beginning of the season. He averaged 9.9 points per game with 38.4% shooting from beyond the arc with the Jazz.

Now, he’ll have an opportunity to work towards winning what would become his first NBA title in what could potentially be his last pro season.

The San Antonio Spurs have added one of the most prominent legends in franchise history to their coaching staff.

Former Spurs big man, Tim Duncan, has joined his former head coach Gregg Popovich’s coaching staff as an assistant for the upcoming 2019-2020 NBA season.

The always witty Popovich, who spent 19 years as the 15-time All Star’s head coach, said that “It is only fitting, that after I served loyally for 19 years as Tim Duncan’s assistant, that he returns the favor.”

Popovich’s comments are in jest, but the truth is that neither he nor the San Antonio franchise would’ve had the success that they did in the nearly two decades he spent as part of the franchise without him.

Duncan won five NBA Championships with San Antonio, winning the Finals MVP Award three times. He is one of the most decorated and heralded players in the league’s history, having been named a first-team All-NBA selection ten times, a first-team All-Defense selection seven times, and twice being named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player in 2002 and 2003.

He’s a surefire inductee for next year’s Basketball Hall of Fame class, and now he’s ready to transition into a new role as a teacher of young big men.

After the Oklahoma City Thunder dealt forward Paul George to the Los Angeles Clippers, the writing was on the wall for the franchise. In order to start a rebuild, the team would have to ship former NBA MVP Russell Westbrook out in order to kickstart a restructuring of the franchise.

On Thursday night, the Thunder achieved their goal and significantly altered the NBA landscape.

Oklahoma City agreed to a blockbuster trade with the Houston Rockets, which will send Russell Westbrook south to Houston and will send a bevy of draft picks and veteran point guard Chris Paul back to OKC.

Westbrook, who was drafted by the Thunder back in 2008 and has spent the entirety of his NBA career with the Southwest Conference franchise, said goodbye to the only franchise he has known with an emotional post on Instagram.

Oklahoma City will receive Chris Paul, two first-round picks in 2024 and 2026, and the ability to swap first-round selections with Houston in two other seasons. There has already been speculation that OKC could decide to trade Paul, who is still a quality point guard, to a contending team.

Houston’s new dynamic duo of Russell Westbrook and James Harden, ex-teammates in Oklahoma City, promises to be one of the most exciting partnerships in the NBA. The Rockets have a new weapon and will look to compete for the Western Conference crown next season.

The Golden State Warriors have decided to cut bait with a key member of their roster that helped them win three NBA Championships over the last five seasons.

The Bay Area franchise, as multiple sources have reported, plans to waive veteran point guard Shaun Livingston as part of a roster restructuring effort.

Livingston parts ways with the franchise that he joined back in 2014, when he was working his way back to re-establishing himself as an NBA player after a horrendous knee injury suffered during his tenure with the LA Clippers.

He found the most stable home of his pro career in Golden State, where he averaged 4 points and 1.8 assists per game off of the bench last season. His performance last season was the worst of his tenure with the Warriors, and he saw a reduction in minutes played.

The point guard said that he, at age 34, is determined to continue playing despite receiving $2 million guaranteed in the Warriors’ decision to waive him.

Livingston will immediately become one of the most valuable point guard options left on the free agent market, and is likely to find a new home with another contending team.

Delon Wright performed impressively in a short cameo with the Memphis Grizzlies last season after heading over from the Toronto Raptors in the Marc Gasol deal. The 27-year-old guard put up the best scoring and assist marks of his short career in semi-regular playing time.

He showed enough, in fact, that the Dallas Mavericks decided that they wanted to acquire him and add them to their roster, which will be shooting for a playoff appearance next NBA season.

The Grizzlies agreed to sign Wright to a three-year, $29 million deal and then deal him to Dallas in exchange for two future second-round NBA Draft picks.

Wright will now head to Dallas, where he’ll join the Mavs to share a backcourt with talented players such as Luka Doncic, Seth Curry, and Tim Hardaway Jr. He’ll almost certainly be a bench player primarily, but he’ll be an important piece for the Mavericks as a defensive stopper and change of pace.

The Utah alum averaged 12.2 points, 5.4 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 1.6 steals per game on 43% shooting during his short 27-game stint with the Grizzlies. The Mavericks hope to get this type of production from the late-blooming point guard over the next several seasons.

The Los Angeles Lakers might have already made their big offseason move when they acquired Anthony Davis from the New Orleans Pelicans, but that doesn’t mean that they’re finished.

The Lakers agreed to terms with free agent shooting guard Avery Bradley on a 2-year, $9.7 million deal.

https://twitter.com/lakers/status/1148442262193360896?s=21

Bradley, a nine-year NBA veteran, joins the Lakers as one of a bevy of backcourt and perimeter options. He is expected to serve as a veteran boost for a young roster of guards with little experience in the league.

The 28-year-old was selected in the first round of the 2010 NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics and played sparingly in his first season. However, beginning in 2011, Bradley became a key piece of a Celtics roster that was a consistent playoff presence during his time with the team.

He was twice named a defensive All-NBA selection while with Boston, and consistently averaged around 15 points per game as a starter.

Boston spent the past two seasons as a journeyman, spending time with the Clippers, Pistons, and Grizzlies. While his scoring numbers went down, he is still regarded as a three-point option with some of the best defensive guard play in the league.

While he won’t be the spalshiest addition made by LA this offseason, his signing provides the Lakers with a valuable piece that they hope will leas them back to the playoffs.

The Utah Jazz continued to bolster their roster in the NBA’s free agency period on Tuesday after locking up Jeff Green for the 2019-20 season on a one-year deal worth $2.5 million.

Many throughout the league praised the Jazz, who finished with a 50-32 record and grabbed the 5th seed in the Western Conference, for the addition of the veteran wing player.

Dwyane Wade, one of Green’s friend in the league, posted this tweet upon hearing that Green had signed his third consecutive one-year deal for small amounts of money.

The rest of the league’s loss will be the Jazz’s gain, as they add the productive veteran forward to bolster a roster that has already seen the additions of Mike Conley Jr. and Bojan Bogdanovic.

Green, who spent the 2018-19 season with the Washington Wizards, broke into the league with the Boston Celtics in 2007. Since then, he’s averaged 13.2 points per game and has shot 33.3% from 3-point range.

He’s a consistent veteran player who will provide the Jazz with good perimeter defense and a scoring boost. His steady hand and experience will also be useful for a young team that has aspirations to do big things next season.

The Jazz begin their preseason slate in October.

After acquiring the veteran three-point specialist in a trade from the Utah Jazz, it appears that the Phoenix Suns don’t have any plans to keep him on their roster.

Korver, who is signed to a partially guaranteed contract for next season, will apparently be let go by the rebuilding Suns, who don’t seem to have any use for the veteran.

There won’t be any lack of suitors for one of the league’s top sharpshooters, however, as NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski is already reporting, there will be several teams interested in his services. He has named the Los Angeles Lakers, Philadelphia 76ers, and Milwaukee Bucks as possible landing spots.

Korver has made a career for himself as a dead-eye long range specialist. He had sparingly been used as a starter in his NBA career, but has always posted quality scoring numbers off of the bench.

The 38-year-old averaged 9.3 points per game for the surprising Jazz as a reserve player last season.

Korver could be a fit for several contenders as a veteran scoring option on the bench. Many have speculated that he could look to team up with former Cleveland Cavaliers teammate LeBron James, with whom he is close, with the Lakers.

Korver has until later this summer to make a decision, and the only thing that’s clear now is that his future won’t be in Phoenix.

The Philadelphia 76ers made a big pick-up on the first day of NBA free agency as they signed veteran big man Al Horford to a reported four-year, $109 million deal. It was the second piece of good news for the Sixers on a day where they also closed a five-year contract extension with forward Tobias Harris.

The 33-year-old forward/center spent the first nine seasons of his career with the Atlanta Hawks, where he established himself as one of the most consistent and productive big men in the league. The former 3rd overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft made four All-Star teams during his tenure in Atlanta.

Horford then moved to Boston to play with the Celtics for the 2016-17 season, where he became an integral part of three straight playoff teams. Like a fine wine, Horford got better with age while in Boston, putting up his best overall season last year with a 13.6 point, 6.7 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game line in only 29 minutes per game. He shot 53.5% from the field.

Now, the University of Florida alum will have the opportunity to pair up with young sensation Joel Embiid down low in the Sixers’ frontcourt, a tantalizing proposition for a team that will have big dreams to contend for the Eastern Conference crown.

The Sixers are expected to make the signing official later this week.
