Despite currently sitting on the last playoff spot in Western Conference, Memphis Grizzlies will face a tough challenge to stay there. This is in part due to NBA’s play-in rules that might force Memphis to play additional games even if they finish the regular season as the No.8 seed.

Understandably, Grizzlies star rookie Ja Morant isn’t a fan of these rules and thinks they are unfair to his team.

“But, you know, we can’t control that,” said Morant in an appearance on ESPN’s The Jump. “Only thing we can control is how, you know, we go out and attack each of these games before that decision is made.”

Grizzlies were 3.5 games in front of their closest followers when the NBA suspended its 2019/20 season due to coronavirus pandemic. Now, in the remaining eight games, they will have to increase that advantage to 4.5 games if they want to make it to the postseason.

In case they are 4.0 or fewer games in front of No.9, Memphis will have to find their way to playoffs through play-in series against that team. In this case, they will have to win one game to clinch the spot, while the lower-seeded team will need two wins to do so.

Morant, however, believes this possibility will provide extra motivation for him and his teammates.

“I just feel like it’s an extra chip,” he added. “You know — more fuel to the fire, more motivation for us.”

Grizzlies are set to resume their season on August 1st against San Antonio Spurs.

NBA plans to officially resume its playing activities with several exhibition games, which should help teams settle into competitive form before the regular season kicks in. However, these games will be a bit shorter than usual.

According to NBA.com, the league decided to shorten the first set of exhibition games by eight minutes. This means that each quarter will be 10-minutes long instead of the usual 12 minutes.

The decision was made in order to ease the load on players who haven’t competed in four months, and also to help the teams that still don’t have their full rosters in Orlando. It is expected that the remaining two sets of exhibition games resume with the standard timing.

“I believe that it’s done just trying to get safety first for the players,” said Orlando coach Steve Clifford of the decision. “I think most teams are like us, where everybody is just feeling their way and guys aren’t in the type of condition they would normally be in a training camp situation.”

Each team will play three exhibition games before the NBA resumes its 2019/20 regular season. The first games will be played on Wednesday and are scheduled to continue through the end of July.

Houston Rockets’ superstar Russell Westbrook has tested positive for coronavirus. The 31-year-old All-Star announced the news on social media, adding that he’s “currently feeling well.”

According to Westbrook, despite testing positive, he intends to rejoin his teammates in Orlando once he gets cleared.

Rockets traveled to Orlando last week, but Westbrook, James Harden, and Luc Mbah a Moute were not with the rest of the team for unspecified reasons. The trio was initially expected to join their teammates in “three to four days,” but it remains unclear whether that will happen now.

Russell Westbrook was expected to be Rockets’ driving force Orlando, as the team was getting ready to challenge for NBA title. Westbrook, who joined Rockets in the offseason from Oklahoma City Thunder, was averaging 27.5 points per game before the season was suspended. He also had 8.0 rebounds, 7.0 assists and 1.9 steals on average.

Westbrook’s positive coronavirus test reportedly wasn’t the only headache for Houston Rockets since the team came to Orlando. According to sources, Rockets’ forward Bruno Caboclo broke the quarantine upon arrival and will now have to spend eight days in isolation in his room. He will be allowed to rejoin team practices after that.

Washington Wizards’ star Bradley Beal won’t be able to help his team in the chase for a playoff spot once NBA resumes the season this month. According to Wizards, Beal is out for the rest of 2019/20 because of a shoulder injury.

According to Wizards general manager Tommy Sheppard, Bradley struggled with an injury even before the season got suspended, and the issue only became worse in recent months.

“Bradley did everything possible to be ready to play, but after closely monitoring his individual workouts we came to the conclusion that it was best for him to sit out the upcoming games in Orlando and avoid the risk of further injury,” said Sheppard in a statement.

Bradley is Wizards’ second player to be out for the season, with guard Davis Bertans previously deciding to skip the Orlando trip. Without the duo, Washington is expected to have a tough time getting to the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference. They are currently sitting at No.9 with 5.5 games behind Orlando Magic with only eight games left to be played in the regular season.

Bradley Beal was, without competition, Wizards’ best player in the past couple of years. He was especially impressive this season, averaging 30.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, 6.1 assists, and 1.2 steals per game.

“This was a difficult decision and one that I did not take lightly as the leader of this team,” said Beal after it was revealed he won’t join the team. “I wanted to help my teammates compete for a playoff spot in Orlando, but also understand that this will be best for all of us in the long term.

Indiana Pacers’ All-Star Victor Oladipo still doesn’t know whether he’ll join his team for NBA season resume.

Several weeks ago, Oladipo said that his decision on going to Orlando will mostly depend on his physical ability. The 28-year-old guard was previously sidelined with a knee injury for more than a year and only returned to action in January.

According to sources, Pacers are confident that they’ll have their best player on the team for the rest of 2019/20 and have made him part of their travel list. However, Oladipo himself told reporters on Wednesday that he still hasn’t made the final decision.

“I haven’t made a decision just yet. Just taking it one day at a time,” said Oladipo. “I feel like when the day comes, I’ll know. I appreciate my teammates and this organization for backing me and supporting me with whatever decision I make, but at the same time, I’m focused on me getting as strong as possible and getting where I’m at.”

Despite their optimism, Pacers reportedly didn’t pressure Oladipo and have informed the player that they will support him regardless of the choice he makes. Also, the organization didn’t set any deadlines for him to make the final decision.

Since coming back from injury, Victor Oladipo played 13 games in which he averaged 13.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 3.0 assists.

Brooklyn Nets face another roster change ahead of their trip to Orlando for NBA season resume. The team will most likely have to find a new backup forward to step in as Wilson Chandler announced over the weekend that he would sit out the remainder of 2019/20 season.

Chandler said that he made the decision because he wants to spend more time with his family.

“As difficult as it will be to not be with my teammates, the health and well-being of my family has to come first,” Chandler told ESPN. “Thank you to the Nets organization for understanding and supporting me in this decision, and I will be watching and rooting for our team in Orlando.”

Chandler joined Nets on a one-year deal in the summer and managed to play 35 games with the organization before the season was suspended due to coronavirus pandemic. He averaged 5.9 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game.

According to reports, the most likely candidate to replace Chandler will be Justin Anderson, who already spent time with the Nets this season on a 10-day contract.

Brooklyn Nets previously added former Miami Heat guard Tyler Johnson until the end of the season, hoping to get backcourt depth in the absence of All-Star Kyrie Irving. Among other roster moves, the team also waived Theo Pinson.
