Hall of Famer Jay Wright is leaving Villanova and bringing to an end his 21-year stint as the head coach of the university’s basketball program. The news hasn’t been made official, but multiple reports say Wright already notified the university and the players about the decision.

Wright will leave Villanova Wildcats in good hands. The Fordham Rams’ head coach Kyle Neptune is believed to be the strongest favorite to take over the program. Neptune previously spent 10 years with the Wildcats, working as a video coordinator and assistant under Wright.

Jay Wright was named Villanova’s head coach in 2001. He has since re-established the university as a dominant force in college basketball, leading the Wildcats to two national championships and four Final Four appearances. Wright compiled 520–197 record during his time there, including 244–123 in Big East Conference.

Prior to joining Villanova, Wright spent seven seasons as a head coach with Hofstra University while also working as an assistant with Drexel and UNLV, among other programs. He also served on Gregg Popovich’s staff at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where Team USA won the gold medal.

For his contributions to the game of basketball and sports success, Wright was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021.

After failing to land an NBA contract, Baylor’s Mark Vital Jr. is trying his luck in the NFL. Vital, who played four years of college basketball as a power forward, landed a practice deal with the Seattle Seahawks.

The Seahawks announced the move on Thursday, revealing that Vital will line up at the tight end position.

Despite not playing football since middle school, Vital is confident that he can make his mark in the NFL.

“I feel like I can be a Hall of Famer,” said Vital in a chat with KPLC. “I’m already getting compared to Antonio Gates from different scouts and teams when hearing them talk about me.”

Los Angeles Chargers legend Antonio Gates spent his college career as a basketball player just like Vital. Gates signed as an undrafted free agent with the Chargers in 2003 and became one of the best tight ends the NFL has seen. During his time as a football player, he earned eight Pro Bowl nods, five All-Pro selections, and was part of the NFL 2000s All-Decade Team.

While at Baylor, Mark Vital averaged 5.6 points and 6.7 rebounds and helped the program win the NCAA title in 2021. After going undrafted in the NBA Draft, he spent the Summer League with the Portland Trail Blazers but failed to impress. With no teams interested in offering him a contract, Vital ultimately figured he might have more luck in football and switched sports.

After missing the 2020 college season due to a foot injury, quarterback Jack Coan decided for a change of scenery. The 21-year-old athlete announced on Monday that he’s leaving Wisconsin and will transfer to Notre Dame.

Coan, who entered the NCAA’s transfer portal in December with one season of eligibility, confirmed the news on social media.

Coan started 18 games for Wisconsin in 2018 and 2019, leading the Badgers to a 12-6 record. He threw for 3,242 yards, 23 touchdowns, and eight interceptions in those two seasons. The 21-year-old QB was especially successful in 2019, completing 69.6 percent of his passes while leading the program to the Big Ten West Division title.

Coan won’t be guaranteed a starting job at Notre Dame, but there is a good chance he’ll end up getting it regardless. The Fighting Irish will most likely lose current starter Ian Book to the NFL next year while backups Drew Pyne and Brendon Clark lack experience.

Wisconsin, on the other hand, will most likely move on with Graham Mertz, who stepped in for Coan in 2020. Mertz started six games last year, recording three wins and three losses while throwing for 1,108 yards, eight TDs, and five interceptions.

Despite being a college football powerhouse for decades, Alabama only has two Heisman Trophy winners in the program’s history. But that could well change soon as Crimson Tide quarterback Mac Jones and wide receiver DeVonta Smith will be in the running for the award this season.

Jones and Smith were revealed as finalists for the Heisman Trophy in 2020, joined by Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence and Florida QB Kyle Trask.

The winner of the award will be announced on January 5th via a virtual ceremony.

Unlike last season, when LSU’s Joe Burrow was a clear winner, there is no definitive favorite in 2020, and each player has a case that could get him the award.

DeVonta Smith would be an intriguing pick as he would be the first non-QB winner of the award since 2015 when Alabama’s Derrick Henry received the honors. Smith has been the best wide receiver in college football this year, racking up 98 receptions for 1,511 yards and 17 touchdowns.

His teammate, Mac Jones, also has a shot, leading the Crimson Tide to an 11-0 record with some great performances. Jones threw for 3,739 yards and 32 TDs this season while having only four interceptions.

Trevor Lawrence was a favorite to win the Heisman Trophy before the season started, but the fact that he missed some time this season because of COVID-19 puts him at a disadvantage. Lawrence also wasn’t as prolific as some other QBs in college football this season, although he still had 2,753 passing yards and 22 TDs.

Finally, Kyle Trask has arguably been the most productive signal-caller in college, leading the nation with 43 touchdowns while also throwing for 4,125 yards, both of which are Florida records. The fact that the program finished with an 8-3 record, however, might hinder his chances.
