The post Knicks’ Jalen Brunson Scores 61 Points in OT Loss to Spurs appeared first on yoursportspot.com.
]]>Brunson not only set his career high, but his 61 points were also second-most in a single game in franchise history. He ended up coming just one point shy from tying Carmelo Anthony’s record of 62 points.
In order to get to 61, Brunson took 47 shots. This is the most in the NBA since 2016, when late Kobe Bryant attempted 50 shots in his farewell game.
While Brunson’s offensive masterclass got the Knicks close to an important win, they just couldn’t close it out. This is something that Brunson acknowledged after the game, saying that his performance “doesn’t really matter”.
“It’s great, but … that stuff is washed out the window with a loss,” Brunson said. “So it doesn’t really matter.”
By failing against the Spurs, the Knicks have seen their chances of making a run for the second seed in the East being diminished. They are sitting at No. 4 with a 44-29 record and are two games behind the second-placed Milwaukee Bucks. Also, they are in danger of losing the home-court advantage, being just 1.5 games ahead of fifth-placed Orlando Magic.

]]>Randle dislocated his shoulder back in late January in a 125-109 win over the Miami Heat. Speaking publicly for the first time since then, Randle told reporters on Wednesday that he’s making progress in recovery but still doesn’t know whether he’ll manage to avoid surgery.
“There’s still necessary steps. It’s a process to everything. I have to weigh out everything, ultimately, and decide from there,” Randle said via ESPN. “But right now, I’m just focused on trying to avoid [surgery], obviously, and get back on the court as soon as I can.”
Knicks’ head coach Tom Thibodeau later added that Randle is “working out twice a day” but is yet to resume basketball activities.
Randle has been having a great season before going down. He averaged 24.0 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game while receiving his third All-Star nod.
Knicks have struggled in Randle’s absence, entering the All-Star break with four consecutive losses. They are still fourth in the East with a 33-22 record but have the Philadelphia 76ers and Indiana Pacers breathing down their neck.

]]>According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, the Knicks already applied for Disabled Player Exception. In Robinson’s case, DPE is worth $7.8 million, half of his $15.6 million salary for this season.
The league grants DPE to teams that have one or more players out with long-term injuries. The process includes NBA-appointed doctors doing an evaluation on the player who is subject to a DPE request and determining whether the injury will prevent the player from returning before the end of the season.
If the Knicks get their DPE request approved, they will have $7.8 million at their disposal to use for signing a free agent or as a trade exception. However, any player they get from the free agent market can only sign a contract until the end of the current campaign. Also, the player they trade for needs to be on an expiring deal.
Mitchell Robinson played 21 games in 2023-24 before going down with an injury. He averaged 6.2 points and a career-high 10.3 rebounds.
The Knicks are currently fifth in the Eastern Conference with a 16-11 record.

]]>Many believed that the Cavs would find a way to prolong the series, facing a 1-3 deficit in the series and playing in front of the home crowd. However, the Knicks were the more aggressive team from the get-go, building a 10-point lead at the half.
Cleveland attempted a comeback on several occasions in the third and fourth quarters, but each time the Knicks found ways to make stops at the right moment or responded offensively to keep the lead intact.
Jalen Brunson delivered another great performance, scoring 23 points and adding four rebounds and four assists. RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley added 21 points and 19 points, respectively.
Donovan Mitchell had 28 points, seven boards, and five assists for the Cavaliers, but struggled from beyond the arc, going 3 of 12. Darius Garland followed with 21 points and four assists.
The New York Knicks will now face the Miami Heat in the semi-finals, possibly doing so without one of their main players. The Knicks’ star forward Julius Randle rolled his ankle late in the first half and didn’t return to the game after. The full extent of his injury remains unknown.

]]>With the win, the Knicks have improved to a 46-33 record, meaning that they can’t finish worse than the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference standing. This will be the third playoff trip for the Knicks in the past three seasons. Prior to that, the famed franchise endured a seven-year postseason drought.
The Knicks took on a depleted Wizards team that played without stars Bradley Beal and Kristaps Porzingis, but it wasn’t a walk in the park like many assumed. The New York team was trailing eight points at halftime and needed a strong third period, in which they outscored the Wizards by 15 points, to take control of the game.
Four of the Knicks’ starters scored 20+ points, with Jalen Brunson and Quentin Grimes leading the way with 27 points each. Washington, on the other hand, saw a big night from forward Corey Kispert, who scored 29 points.
While the Knicks will feel good about clinching the playoff spot early, the job might not be done for them just yet. They will need a strong finish of the regular season if they want to be in danger of losing the No. 5 seed to the Brooklyn Nets, who sit as the sixth seed with 2.5 games behind.

]]>FOX Sports’ Yaron Weitzman recently published a story on how the Knicks turned around their season and revealed that Thibodeau personally believed in December that his time with the franchise was running out. The Knicks were 10-13 at that point, and according to Weitzman’s sources, the veteran head coach felt executive vice president William Wesley is pushing for his exit.
“They’re going to fire me,” Thibodeau allegedly said to one of his friends.
This corresponds with a recent report from SNY, which said that Wesley has been campaigning to get rid of Thibodeau for a while now. The executive even made his feelings known to owner James Dolan earlier in the season, reportedly telling him that Thibodeau’s coaching is a big part of the Knicks’ struggles.
However, the Knicks eventually kept Thibodeau, and it ended up proving to be the right decision. The team is currently at a 39-28 record, sitting as the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference and being just two games behind the Cleveland Cavaliers at No. 4.

]]>According to The Athletic, MSG+ will be available for fans that live in regions where MSG Networks is available. The service will come with a number of subscription options, including a monthly subscription for $29.99, an annual subscription for $309.99, and a single-game pass for $9.99. The users who have MSG Networks as part of their cable bundle will receive access to MSG+ for free.
The introduction of MSG+ will allow the fans of New York-based teams to get easier access to games. This is particularly important considering the fact that MSG Networks hasn’t been part of Comcast, one of the largest cable TV providers in the New York area, since late 2021.
Many regional networks have been recently looking into ways to deliver their content to consumers directly instead of going through cable operators. However, it remains to be seen how the end users will react to the MSG+ pricing plan, which might prove to be too expensive for casual fans.

]]>Just 45 minutes before tipoff, the Mavericks confirmed that Brunson would be unavailable for selection. He had previously been labeled as questionable for the game.
This marks Brunson’s first absence this season, having appeared in the reverse fixture of this clash, when the Mavericks soared to yet another overtime victory with the game ending 121-120 in New York City.
Brunson spent the first four seasons of his career with the Dallas Mavericks, emerging as the Mavericks’ second-highest scorer last season as the Mavs made it to the Western Conference Finals.
Although the Mavs hoped to re-sign Brunson for another season, the point guard ultimately decided to agree to the four-year, $104 million deal offered to him by the Knicks.

]]>As a part of this deal, Detroit is set to receive both Walker and no. 13 overall pick, Jalen Duren, from Charlotte. The Hornets acquired a future first-round pick and multiple future second-round picks as a part of this deal, including multiple picks from New York.
The Knicks sent Duren and Walker to the Pistons for a 2025 conditional Milwaukee Bucks first-round pick. This shake-up comes shortly after the team sent no. 11 overall pick Ousmane Dieng to Oklahoma City Thunder in exchange for three future first-round picks.

Kemba’s exit from the Knicks doesn’t come as a huge shocker since he was sidelined for most of the season. After dealing with knee problems this winter, he reached an agreement with the team to take a break back in February. The Knick’s president of basketball operations Leon Rose said they fully support his “decision to shut it down for the remainder of the season and use this time to prepare for next season.”
Before joining the Knicks in 2021, Kemba spent eight seasons with the Hornets before being traded to the Boston Celtics in 2019.

]]>The Knicks will receive guard Denzel Valentine from the Cavs and cash considerations and draft rights to Wang Zhelin and Brad Newley from the Lakers as part of the trade. On the other hand, the LA team will get the draft rights to Louis Labeyrie.
Rondo returned to the Lakers in the offseason after splitting 2020-21 between the Atlanta Hawks and the LA Clippers. However, the 35-year-old saw limited action in Los Angeles, playing in just 18 games and 3.1 points and 3.7 assists per contest.
The Cavaliers were highly motivated to do this deal, especially since the loss of Rubio left them without a veteran presence on the bench. Cleveland has exceeded expectations in 2021-22 and is currently fifth in Eastern Conference with a 21-16 record. Rondo is expected to play a significant role for the team moving forward, and the Cavs believe he will help them continue to push for the playoffs.
On the other hand, the Lakers did the deal as Rondo dropped out of rotation, and it was unlikely he would crack it again anytime soon. His departure opens up a roster spot for the team, which they will most likely use to sign forward Stanley Johnson.
Finally, the Knicks probably wanted to see whether they could get something out of Valentine, who averaged 2.9 points and 1.7 rebounds with Cleveland this season. If not, they can move away from him at no cost considering he is on the partially-guaranteed deal.
