New York Mets infield prospect Ronny Mauricio is expected to be out for the entirety of the 2024 season after he underwent surgery to repair a torn right ACL. The Mets confirmed that the team’s medical director Dr. David Altchek operated on Mauricio at the Hospital for Special Surgery, with the typical return time for the surgery being between eight and 12 months.

Making his major league debut on September 1, Mauricio was injured on December 10 while playing for Tigres del Licey in the Dominican Winter League. While attempting to steal second base, the 22-year-old collapsed and clenched his right knee. Making 21 starts for the Mets last season at second, Mauricio was expected to participate in spring training for regular playing time.

Mauricio got his Mets career off to a promising start, hitting .248 with two homers, nine RBIs, seven steals, and a .643 OPS in September. This comes after he hit .292 with 23 homers, 71 RBI, and 24 steals for Triple-A Syracuse.

Veteran right-hand pitcher Luis Severino is saying goodbye to the New York Yankees. However, the two-time All-Star isn’t going far away.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Severino agreed to a one-year deal with the Yankees’ crosstown rivals, New York Mets. The 29-year-old player will earn a base salary of $13 million in the 2024 MLB season.

Severino is coming off one of his worst campaigns since coming to majors in 2015. He made 18 starts, going 4-8 with a career-worst 6.65 ERA. This was part of the reason why he hasn’t seen as much interest in his services as was expected, considering his experience and past success.

Severino has been an important part of the Yankees’ rotation for the majority of his time with the franchise. At one point, he was even considered one of the game’s best pitchers, especially in 2017 when he finished third in Cy Young voting.

Injuries have slowed down Severino’s career after his second All-Star campaign in 2018, as he was limited to only seven starts between 2019 and 2021 due to injuries and Tommy John surgery.

The deal with the Mets could work well for both sides. Severino can rebuild his status with a strong season and get a bigger payday after the 2024 campaign. The New York team, on the other hand, gets an experienced arm as it looks to rebuild its rotation.

The New York Mets’ 2023 campaign started with hopes of World Series titles. It will end with a losing record, the majority of star players traded away, and manager Buck Showalter no longer being in the building.

The franchise confirmed over the weekend that Showalter was relieved of his duties and will leave the franchise after two years.

Showalter took over the Mets in 2022 and led them to a 101-61 record before being eliminated in the NL Wild Card series against the San Diego Padres. The New York team was expected to embark on a deeper postseason run in 2023, bringing in a number of high-profile players, including three-time Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander, in the offseason, but that didn’t turn out to be the case.

The Mets never found their footing, struggling in almost all departments. When it became clear that the team was likely to miss out on the postseason altogether, the front office traded away several veterans like Verlander and Max Scherzer.

The disappointing campaign prompted Mets’ owner Steve Cohen to hire David Stearns as the franchise’s first-ever president of baseball operations earlier this month. According to Cohen, Stearns was the one that ended up making the final call on Showalter.

“This is not a reflection on Buck,” Cohen added. “Buck did everything we wanted him to do. Obviously, the season was a disappointment, but it’s not Buck’s fault, OK? It’s spread across the organization.”

The New York Mets continued the teardown of their underachieving roster on Tuesday by moving on from ace Justin Verlander. According to multiple reports, the Mets are trading Verlander to the Houston Astros.

The Mets will receive outfield prospects Drew Gilbert and Ryan Clifford as part of the trade. Gilbert was considered the top prospect in Astros’ farm system, while Clifford ranked fourth.

Verlander played for the Astros between 2017 and 2022, helping the franchise win two World Series and receiving a couple of Cy Young Awards during that period. He opted to leave Houston in the offseason, inking a two-year, $86.7 million contract with the Mets.

Verlander had a rocky start to his time with the Mets but recently returned to his old self. He has a 6-5 record with a 3.15 ERA and 81 strikeouts so far in the season but has posted a 1.49 ERA in his last seven starts.

By reuniting with Verlander, the Astros address one of their biggest concerns this season. The team lost several starters to injuries lately, and their pitching staff struggled with inconsistency. With Verlander back in the rotation, they might be poised for another deep playoff run.

The Mets, on the other hand, have now officially given up on trying to be competitive this season and possibly in 2024. Besides Verlander, the team also traded a number of other veterans, including Max Scherzer and David Robertson, with even more departures expected before the trade deadline.

The New York Mets owner Steve Cohen still hasn’t lost hope that his team can turn things around after a disappointing start of the 2023 campaign. However, he might soon lose patience with some of those responsible for poor results.

Speaking with the media on Wednesday, Cohen said that he is prepared to make some tough decisions if the Mets don’t improve by the trade deadline.

“All is not lost yet, but it’s getting late,” Cohen said. “I’m preparing my management team for all possibilities. If they don’t get better, we have decisions to make at the trade deadline. That’s not my preferred end result. We’re preparing all contingencies.”

The Mets currently find themselves fourth in NL East with a 36-43 record. They have lost seven out of their last 10 games and are 8.5 games removed from the wild-card spot. This is despite having the biggest payroll in sports at $360 million.

Cohen hinted that the decisions he was talking about would revolve around trading players rather than firing general manager Billy Eppler and manager Buck Showalter.

“In an unfortunate circumstance, if I can find some ways to improve our farm system, that’s the path we take,” Cohen added. “Cause I’m willing to do it.”

With injuries and inconsistencies plaguing their catcher group in recent weeks, the New York Mets decided to turn to veteran Gary Sanchez to help them weather the storm.

The Mets announced on Friday that they have called up Sanchez from Triple-A Syracuse and added him to the active roster. In a corresponding move, they sent catcher Tomas Nido on a rehab assignment to Single-A St. Lucie and optioned catcher Michael Perez to Syracuse.

The move represents a return to New York for Sanchez, who spent the first seven years of his MLB career with the New York Yankees.

“It feels good to be back here in New York after all those years,” Sanchez told the reports through an interpreter. “It’s a different team, but it’s still the same city, so it’s exciting to be here.”

Sanchez spent 2022 with the Minnesota Twins and played 128 games during the campaign. He finished the season with a .205 batting average to go with 61 RBIs and 16 home runs.

After his contract with the Twins expired, Sanchez initially inked a minor league deal with the San Francisco Giants. He made 16 appearances with the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats before opting out of his contract in early May. The 30-year-old player signed a minor league contract with the Mets shortly after that.

Sanchez has batted .225 throughout his career and has 154 homers and 401 RBIs. He was selected to the All-Star game twice and has Silver Slugger Award from 2017.

Harvey retires after playing nine seasons in the majors, with six of them coming with the New York Mets. He included a photo of himself in a Mets jersey in the retirement post alongside a farewell message.

“To the fans, most importantly the NY Mets fans: you made a dream come true for me,” he wrote in the post. “A dream I never could have thought to be true. Who would have thought a kid from Mystic, CT, would be able to play in the greatest city in the world, his hometown? You are forever embedded in my heart.

Matt Harvey retires with a 50–66 record as a starter, 4.42 ERA, and 867 strikeouts. He has an All-Star appearance from 2013 and the NL Comeback Player of the Year award her earned after coming back from Tommy John surgery.

The New York Mets announced on Friday that their closer Edwin Diaz underwent a successful surgery to repair a torn patellar tendon in his right knee. Diaz suffered the injury during Puerto Rico’s 5-2 win over the Dominican Republic at the World Baseball Classic.

The Mets didn’t give a timeline for Diaz’s return to action, but the team is reportedly expecting the 28-year-old to miss the entire 2023 MLB season.

Speaking with reporters earlier this week, general manager Billy Eppler said that Diaz’s injury usually requires eight months of recovery.

“There are instances where athletes have come back earlier, more around the six-month mark,” Eppler said. “But those are a little bit more of the exception than the rule.”

After the procedure, Diaz issued a statement on social media thanking the fans for the support and saying that he is “doing well and healing.”

Edwin Diaz was coming off a great campaign in 2022 that saw him finish the season with a 3-1 record. He had 32 saves and 118 strikeouts to go with a 1.31 ERA, earning his second All-Star nod and an All-MLB First Team nod. The Mets later signed him to a five-year, $102 million contract, which is the biggest-ever given to a closer.

With Diaz out for the 2023 campaign, the Mets are expected to pursue an experienced closer on the trade market. They could also opt for an in-house replacement, with David Robertson, Adam Ottavino, and Brooks Raley being the obvious candidates.

The New York Mets starting pitcher Jose Quintana has suffered a small stress fracture in his fifth rib on his left side, the team confirmed on Monday. Expected to play in the World Baseball Classic for Colombia, Quintana’s availability for the start of the new MLB season has now been put into question.

Quintana departed from his spring training outing on Sunday after experiencing side tightness, after which he withdrew from the World Baseball Classic. He is now scheduled to travel to New York for further imaging.

With Quintana’s return date still unknown, the Mets will need to determine how they will fill the void left by their star left-handed pitcher. Among the team’s existing lineup are fellow stars Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander who are followed by the arrival from Japan Kodai Senga and veteran Carlos Carrasco.

Should the Mets require additional firepower, they could turn to David Peterson and Tylor Megill or Elieser Hernandez and Joey Lucchesi, who are set to begin the season in the minor leagues.

Quintana joined the Mets on a two-year, $26 million contract this offseason. The move came after he posted a 2.01 ERA in 12 starts for the St. Louis Cardinals last season.

All-Star shortstop Carlos Correa won’t be a member of the San Francisco Giants after all. In a shocking MLB free agency twist, Correa backed out of the Giants deal and will sign with the New York Mets instead.

Correa originally agreed to a 13-year, $350 million contract with the Giants last week, and his arrival to San Francisco seemed like a done deal. But according to reports, the 28-year-old player’s medical ended up producing some red flags that made the franchise uneasy about committing such money to the veteran.

While the Giants considered their next move, the Mets swooped in to convince Correa to come to New York. It turned out he didn’t need much convincing as he didn’t hesitate much to put a signature to a 12-year, $315 million contract.

After the news broke out, the Giants released a short statement about their failed attempt to sign Correa. According to the team’s president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi, the team and Correa’s representatives had a “difference of opinion” over the results of the player’s physical examination.

Correa struggled with injuries in the past, having issues with his back, ribs, and thumb at different points in his pro career. However, he was mostly-injury free during the 2022 season, playing 136 games with the Minnesota Twins. He finished the campaign with a .291 batting average, 22 home runs, and 64 RBIs.

Veteran right-hander Matt Harvey isn’t coming back to MLB. Instead, the 34-year-old player decided to retire, announcing the news on social media on Friday.
