The New York Yankees All-Star Gleyber Torres is entering the final year of his contract in 2024. But Torres doesn’t seem to be thinking about the possibilities that wait for him in free agency. Instead, he is hoping to be able to prolong his stay in New York past this upcoming season.

While speaking with reporters during spring training earlier this week, Torres made it clear that he sees his long-term future with the franchise.

“I don’t want to leave,” Torres said. “I want to be a Yankee for life.”

Torres confirmed that the Yankees are yet to engage in contract negotiations with his representatives. He added that he understands why that hasn’t been the case so far, referring to previous instances in which the team signed players to long-term extensions ahead of time only for them to underperform.

“We know what’s happened in the past, and I don’t blame them. That’s the business,” Torres added. “So if I [have] a really good year and put [up] really good numbers, I think we can get a conversation for sure.”

Gleyber Torres spent all of his seven years in MLB with the Yankees, playing both shortstop and second baseman. He earned All-Star nods in his first two years in the majors but hasn’t been on the same level since, experiencing frequent dips in form.

However, the 2023 campaign was a promising one for Torres, as he appeared in a career-high 158 games and had a .273 batting average with 25 homers and 68 RBIs.

A new star is joining the New York Yankees’ clubhouse. The storied franchise confirmed on Thursday that it acquired All-MLB outfielder Juan Soto in a trade with the San Diego Padres.

The Yankees will receive Soto and outfielder Trent Grisham while sending pitchers Michael King, Jhony Brito, Randy Vasquez, right-hand prospect Drew Thorpe, and veteran catcher Kyle Higashioka to the Padres.

The Padres gave up a massive package to the Washington Nationals in 2022 to bring Soto to San Diego. The franchise expected the deal would get them over the hump and establish them as a perennial playoff contender.

While the Padres reached the NL Championship Series in Soto’s first season with the franchise, they followed that up with a disappointing campaign in 2023 that saw them miss out on the postseason altogether. This, coupled with the fact that Soto is set to become a free agent next offseason and might command a $500+ million deal, prompted the general manager A.J. Preller to explore the market for the 25-year-old player.

The Yankees, themselves trying to bounce back after missing the playoffs, emerged as the most aggressive suitor for Soto, with the teams being engaged in negotiations for the past several weeks. At one point, it seemed that the deal was nowhere near to being completed, but intensive talks in recent days managed to get Preller and his New York counterpart Brian Cashman closer to their expectations and get the deal over the line.

Juan Soto received All-Star nods in each of his previous three seasons while also being honored with the Silver Slugger Award four consecutive times. He has a batting average of .284 with 160 homers and 483 RBIs.

Despite being out for two months due to an injury and his New York Yankees struggling in 2023, reigning AL MPV Aaron Judge still managed to put his mark on this season. Judge hit his 250th career home run in a 6-2 win over the Houston Astros on Friday and became the fastest player to reach the mark in MLB history.

Judge needed 810 games to get the 250 homers. By doing so, he surpassed Philadelphia Phillies’ legend Ryan Howard, who reached the mark in 855 games. The 31-year-old is now also in the top 10 on the Yankees’ all-time list in career home runs.

“I really don’t think about it,” Judge said via New York Post about his achievement. “When you see the guys that are on the list, especially Ryan Howard, who was one of the greatest power hitters … it’s pretty cool to be on that list.”

Judge would probably reach 250 career homers earlier in the year if it wasn’t for a toe injury that limited him to just 81 games this season. He is batting .265 and has 30 home runs and 57 RBIs for the season.

The absence of Judge also attributed to the Yankees’ poor performances. The New York team is currently fifth in AL East with a 66-69 record and will most likely miss out on the postseason. That would be the first time the Yankees are not in the playoffs since 2016.

After having the most ejections last season, the New York Yankees’ manager Aaron Boone is on track to do the same in 2023 as well. Boone was ejected in Sunday’s 5-1 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals, marking the fifth time he has been sent out this year.

Boon was ejected by plate umpire Dan Merzel in the top of the third inning for offering him a piece of his mind after DJ LeMahieu was called for a strike.

The replay showed that the 3-1 pitch was above the strike zone and that the umpires made an incorrect call.

“Obviously, I got tossed there. I feel like DJ worked a walk there,” Boone said after the game. “That was a big point in that game. First and second with one out.”

Still, Boone took a moment to praise Merzel for his efforts this season.

“I think Dan is a really good young umpire,” he added. “I really do.”

Aaron Boone’s five ejections now lead the league ahead of San Diego Padres’ Bob Melvin, Minnesota Twins’ Rocco Baldelli, and Cincinnati Reds’ David Bell. Boone was ejected a total of 31 times during his five-and-a-half years with the Yankees. He had nine ejections in 2022, while no other manager had more than five.

Veteran point guard Derrick Rose is set to become a free agent after the New York Knicks decided not to pick up his player option for 2023-24. The option would guarantee Rose a $15.6 million salary next season.

According to Fred Katz of The Athletic, the Knicks are still interested in bringing Rose back on a smaller contract.

Rose didn’t play much this past season, falling out of Knicks’ rotation at the start of the season. He only appeared in 27 games and averaged 5.6 points on 12.5 minutes per game.

Despite this, Rose is expected to receive interest from teams around the league, especially if he is willing to play on a minimum contract. In recent years, the 35-year-old showed that he could be a valuable role player, capable of running the second unit and providing burst from the bench.

One destination that is being mentioned is the Chicago Bulls, where Rose started his career. With Lonzo Ball being ruled out for the entire 2023-24 season, the Bulls could use a veteran like Rose to provide them depth in the guard position.

Rose was drafted by the Bulls as the first overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft. He spent seven years in Chicago, winning an NBA MVP award in 2011 and earning three All-Star nods.

The New York Yankees announced on Wednesday that their star slugger Aaron Judge had been placed on the 10-day injured list with a sprained big toe. Judge suffered the injury after making a highlight-reel catch in a 6-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Yankees made several other moves, placing RHP Ryan Weber on the 60-day injured list and signing outfielder Billy McKinney to a major league contract.

Speaking with reporters on Wednesday, the Yankees’ manager Aaron Boone said that Judge’s X-Ray test showed there are no breaks or fractures in his big toe.

“I think it definitely could have been worse,” said Boone. “I feel like he’s going to be all right, he just needs some time now. Hopefully, it’s on the shorter side of things, but the biggest thing is getting the swelling out of there. Look, any time you lose Aaron Judge for any amount of time, and he goes on the IL — hopefully, it’s a short one — you don’t like that.”

The play that caused Judge to injure his toe has already been labeled as the catch of the season. With the Yankees up 5-3, the reigning AL MVP made a full-speed run to catch a ball launched by Dodgers’ J.D. Martinez in the right field. While doing so, he crushed into the bullpen gate, stubbing his big toe in the process.

The New York Yankees have made a surprising decision to move on from veteran outfielder Aaron Hicks. The team made Hicks designated for assignment over the weekend, and the veteran is now heading to the free market.

In a corresponding move, the Yankees added outfielder Greg Allen to their active roster. Allen joined and arrived in New York in a trade with the Boston Red Sox.

The reason why the Yankees’ decision to cut Hicks was unexpected is the outstanding amount of money the franchise will have to pay him. The 33-year-old player is owed $27.6 million from the seven-year, $70 million contract he signed with the franchise in 2019.

Hicks has been struggling for the better part of the 2023 campaign, batting .188 with five RBIs and only one home run in 28 games.

“It is what it is,” Hicks said after the move became official. “It’s part of the business side of it. Just got to move on to the next chapter.”

Aaron Hicks had his MLB debut with the Minnesota Twins in 2013. He spent three seasons with the franchise before being traded to the Yankees. Hicks’ stats in the majors include a .230 batting average, 101 homers, and 356 RBIs.

The New York Yankees are increasingly optimistic that they could soon welcome center fielder Harrison Bader back on the roster. According to Yankees’ manager Aaron Boone, Bader is progressing well in recovery from a left oblique strain and is already taking swings.

While Boone didn’t provide more details on when he expects Bader to return to action, but reiterated that the player took “another good step” by taking around 25 dry swings.

“He swung today, so he continues to do really well,” Boone said. “… I don’t know what the progression will be there. He sprinted I think yesterday and that went really well.”

Harrison Bader was diagnosed with an oblique injury in early March and subsequently placed on the Injured List. At the time, the reports suggested that the 28-year-old player was expected to miss around six weeks.

Bader is in his second season with the Yankees after joining the franchise in a trade from the St. Louis Cardinals ahead of the trade deadline. He appeared in 14 games for the NY team, batting .217 with no homers and nine RBIs.

The Bronxville, New York, native has a career batting average of .245 with 52 home runs and 177 RBIs. He won the Golden Glove Award in 2021.

The New York Yankees center fielder Harrison Bader is a doubt for the team’s opening game of the new season. Manager Aaron Boone confirmed on Friday that Bader has suffered a left oblique strain.

Bader began to feel discomfort on his left side while he was batting during the Yankees’ 4-0 defeat to the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday as part of the team’s spring training.

“It’s an oblique [for Bader]. I don’t have a timeframe for you yet just because kind of the doctors are all weighing in on it today,” Boone announced when questioned by reporters ahead of the Yankees’ 4-3 win over the Detroit Tigers on Friday. “Hopefully, I will have a better timeline for you tomorrow [Saturday]. But it’ll be some time.”

This is the fourth injury concern that has affected the Yankees in the last 24 hours, thereby causing the team much concern as they seek to progress with their spring training program. General manager Brian Cashman announced Thursday announced that Carlos Rodon would start the season on the injury list after the left-hander picked up a “mild forearm strain.” Relievers Tommy Kahnle and Lou Trivino are also on the injury list for the start of the season, picking up biceps tendinitis and an elbow ligament strain respectively.

Carlos Rodon has agreed to a $162 million, six-year contract with the New York Yankees, sources confirmed on Thursday. This comes after the left-handed pitcher opted out of a contract with the San Francisco Giants.

Last season, Rodon was 14-8 with a 2.88 ERA, pitching a career-high 178 innings over 31 starts in the process. This led to Rodon earning his second consecutive All-Star selection.

Rodon’s arrival will be warmly welcomed by the Yankees, who already boasted the fourth overall-ranked rotation in terms of ERA last year. Upon his arrival in New York, Rodon will join the ranks of Gerrit Cole, Nestor Cortes, Luis Severino, and Frankie Montas.

According to ESPN Stats & Information research, Rodon’s contract is the second-largest deal that the Yankees have awarded to a pitcher in franchise history. The highest-value contract remains Gerrit Cole’s $324 million deal in 2019.

To date, Rodon has obtained a career record of 56-46 with a 3.60 ERA.

In a dramatic twist of fate, Rodon won’t have to wait long to come face-to-face with his former team, with the Yankees scheduled to play the Giants on the Opening Day of the 2023 season.
