The NFL world was stunned on Saturday when 29-year-old Indianapolis Colts quarterbacked Andrew Luck announced his retirement from the game of football.

The Stanford alum originally planned to announce his retirement in a Sunday press conference but was forced into rushing an announcement on Saturday night after the news was leaked on social media.

Luck spoke of the effects of multiple injuries, including concussions, a kidney injury, and a calf and ankle sprain that prevented him from participating in the preseason with the AFC South favorites as part of the reason that he’s decided to give up the game at such a young age.

The four-time Pro Bowler simply stated that he was mentally exhausted from the toll of playing professional football and that he knew it was the right decision to hang up the cleats.

Despite missing the entirety of 2017 due to injury, Luck was one of the premier quarterbacks in the league ever since he was drafted first overall in 2012.

He threw for 171 touchdowns and 83 interceptions in what was an excellent, but brief, career.

The Colts will now turn to former backup Jacoby Brissett at the quarterback position, hoping that he will provide even half of the magic that luck did during his Colts career.

The biggest nightmare for any NFL team is losing a key player to injury in a preseason game.

Unfortunately for the Carolina Panthers and star quarterback Cam Newton, that nightmare became a reality on Thursday night. Newton suffered a left ankle sprain in the first quarter of the Panthers’ 10-3 preseason loss to the New England Patriots, casting doubts on the veteran QB’s ability to lead the team in Week 1.

Newton left Gillette Stadium in a walking boot after the game, but the team didn’t provide any other information about the severity of what was ruled to be a left ankle sprain. He is set to undergo further testing over the weekend to find out more about the extent of the injury.

The injury occurred when Patriots defensive lineman Adam Butler took down Newton with a sack. Newton’s foot and ankle were caught up awkwardly under his body when he was taken one, and he immediately left the field and went to the locker room after the play.

Losing Newton, the 2015 NFL MVP, for any amount of time would be a huge blow to Carolina. The team is looking to improve on a disappointing year that saw them finish with a 7-9 record, missing out on the playoffs.

The Indianapolis Colts have revealed that Andrew Luck is now dealing with a high ankle sprain and that his status for Week 1 of the NFL season is in question. What’s not in question is that the star quarterback will not be able to participate at all in this year’s preseason with Indianapolis.

Luck has had a mysterious battle with a calf strain since March, when he was diagnosed with the initial injury. He reportedly suffered the strain during an off-season training session and took steps to rehab the injury after joining the Colts for preseason practice.

However, in a conference call with reporters yesterday, Colts owner and CEO Jim Irsay stated that Luck is dealing with a “small little bone injury” in his ankle, casting doubt on what’s really going on with Luck’s leg. The team’s admission that the quarterback might not be ready for Week 1 against the Los Angeles Chargers has put fans on edge, as they know that the Pro Bowl quarterback is the team’s most important player.

For now, the team expects Luck to continue rehab as he skips the preseason, hopefully being ready in time for Week 1. If not, the team will look to backup Jacoby Brissett to lead them at the start of the 2019 season.

New Oakland Raiders wide receiver Antonio Brown has gotten off to an interesting start to his tenure with his new team, to say the least.

Acquired from the Pittsburgh Steelers in an offseason trade, the dynamic wide receiver first revealed that he burned his feet in a cryotherapy session gone wrong before the start of training camp.

His participation at the camp had been limited until he disappeared from Napa Valley on July 30th, citing his unhappiness with the league’s new regulations that prevent him from wearing his preferred helmet. New regulations have established that the Schutt Air Advantage helmet doesn’t meet the safety requirements set by the NFL.

Brown reportedly threatened to retire if the league didn’t allow him to continue wearing his preferred helmet. He cited an inability to properly see the football to make catches as the reason that he doesn’t want to wear any of the new helmet models.

After taking his grievance against the league to an independent arbitrator, Brown found out on Monday that his request to continue using his old helmet had been denied. Despite the reported retirement threats, the veteran receiver took to Instagram to express his disappointment with the decision while expressing excitement to return to training camp at the same time.

Brown is expected to continue rehabbing his injured feet before he’s able to rejoin the Raiders at full capacity.

The Jets’ already-depleted secondary suffered another blow over the weekend after cornerback Trumaine Johnson strained a hamstring in training camp.

Johnson, the most experienced cornerback on the Jets’ roster, was forced to leave the team’s preseason training session in Florham Park, New Jersey after intercepting a Sam Darnold pass in practice.

The team now says that Johnson will be out for an indefinite time, and that there’s nothing that they can do other than watch and wait to see how long it will take for the veteran to be back and ready.

Johnson signed a five-year, $72.5 million contract with the Jets last offseason after spending the first six seasons of his career with the Rams. This contract made him the second highest-paid CB in the league. He was expected to be a key piece in rebuilding the Jets’ poor secondary, but struggled with inconsistency and poor play during his first season.

Now, the Jets are unsure if Johnson will be able to play in their first game of the season against the Buffalo Bills. If he ends up missing an extended period of time due to injury, it will only add to the buyer’s remorse that the Jets feel after signing Johnson to a big contract last year.

The Detroit Lions’ preseason opener against the New England Patriots on Thursday night ended in a 31-3 loss for the NFC North squad. But that wasn’t the worst news of the night for the Lions.

Wide receiver Jermaine Kearse, who signed with Detroit this June after becoming a free agent during the offseason, suffered a broken leg and additional ankle injuries in the first drive of the game for the Lions offense. This means that he’ll largely miss at least a good chunk of the upcoming NFL season, which kicks off at the beginning of September.

The 29-year-old wide receiver has enjoyed a solid NFL career with the Seattle Seahawks and New York Jets, catching a total of 255 passes for 3,920 yards and 17 touchdowns in 7 NFL seasons.

Kearse was blocking for running back Ty Johnson on a run play in the first quarter of yesterday’s game when he suffered the brutal injury. Doctors immediately ran onto the field to attend to the veteran wide receiver, who appeared to be in considerable pain.

Now, the Lions are left without their veteran option at wide receiver, testing the depth of an already-shallow core of wideouts for quarterback Matthew Stafford. It’s uncertain when Kearse will be able to return to the field, but it certainly won’t happen quickly.
