Mazara batted .268 with 19 home runs and 66 RBI in 119 games with Texas last season, and was expected to be the starter in right field for Chicago.

The strange thing about this development is that no one seems to have any idea why Mazara is heading to the injured list. He had not had any problems participating in practices nor in scrimmages heading into the week, and the team kept quiet as to the reason why he is on the IL.

Some have speculated that Mazara may have tested positive for COVID-19, a theory that would not be surprising considering the number of positive tests that have sidelined players this month.

In the meantime, Nicky Delmonico and Adam Engel are the probable replacements for Mazara until he is healthy and ready to return to the field.

While Mazara has played in 91 games with Texas this season, the franchise has apparently cooled on their former top prospect. A disappointing season in which the right fielder has hit .255 with 14 home runs and a paltry .307 on-base percentage hasn’t helped the outfielder’s cause.

However, it appears that plenty of teams will be interested if Texas does, in fact, decide to cut bait on the Dominican outfielder. He could be an interesting reclamation project for a team that’s looking to add young talent. It’s worth remembering that Mazara is still only 24-years-old and has plenty of skill.

The Rangers could be one of the most active teams at the deadline, with starting pitcher Mike Minor and Mazara supposedly on the trading block. It’ll be worth tuning in over the next few days to see if they’re able to make any moves.
