]]>This was Djokovic’s third Roland Garros trophy, having previously won the tournament in 2016 and 2021.
Djokovic seemed shaky at the start of the match, dropping the first three games. However, once he found his footing, there was no stopping the 36-year-old Serbian.
Djokovic won the first set in a 7-6 (1) tiebreak before easily dispatching Rudd in the next two sets (6-3 and 7-5) and making history.
“I knew that going into the tournament, going into the match, especially, today, that there is history on the line, but I try to focus my attention and my thoughts into preparing for this match in the best way possible to win, like any other match,” Djokovic said after the match. “Of course, I would lie if I say that I didn’t think about the finish line that is right there and that one more match is needed to win a trophy — a historic one.”
However, Djokovic’s pursuit of history is not over yet. He will next try to become the first man to win all four Grand Slams in a single year since Rod Laver did it back in 1969. Djokovic was close to matching Laver during the 2021 season but surprisingly lost to Daniil Medvedev in the US Open finals after previously winning the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon.

]]>Djokovic was unable to participate in the first Grand Slam of the season, the Australian Open after it was revealed he is not vaccinated against COVID-19. He was also forced to sit out Indian Wells and Miami tournaments for the same reason.
However, the Roland Garros is expected to take place without any limitations after France lifted most of its coronavirus-related restrictions. This will allow the Serbian tennis player to enter the country and play regardless of his vaccination status.
“As things stand, nothing stands in the way of Djokovic taking part in the French Open,” tournament director Amelie Mauresmo said at a news conference Wednesday.
It is important to note that things could still change before the 2022 French Open officially begins on May 22nd. If there is a spike in new cases of coronavirus in France, the government could decide to install new restrictions.
Novak Djokovic won the 2021 Roland Garros title after coming back from 0-2 to beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in the finals. It was his second title at this prestigious tournament and 19th Grand Slam title overall. He has 20 career Grand Slam wins, one less than record-holder Rafael Nadal.

]]>First, the coronavirus outbreak caused chaos in tennis, resulting in the cancelation of Wimbledon, where Djokovic would have been the overwhelming favorite. The 33-year-old Serbian was then defaulted from U.S. Open for hitting a line judge with the ball while falling in the French Open finals to Rafael Nadal.
Speaking with reporters about how 2020 unfolded for him, Djokovic said that he “regrets” he didn’t manage to pick up at least one more Grand Slam.
“There is a lingering regret that I didn’t win either the U.S. Open or the Roland Garros this year,” said Djokovic. “I was in outstanding form at both events but having reached the French Open final, I was beaten by a player who was much better on the day.”
Another Grand Slam win would get Novak Djokovic closer to his rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Djokovic currently has 17 titles, compared to Federer and Nadal’s 20.
There is pressure on Djokovic to surpass this number if he wants to get into consideration for the greatest player of all time. It is something he acknowledges but doesn’t feel overwhelmed with.
“Pressure has been a part of my life for a long time, and I’ve learned how to deal with it,” Djokovic explained. “If I retired now, I’d be happy with everything I have achieved, but I still enjoy competing, and every tournament I enter gives me so much motivation and joy.”
