Novak Djokovic needed only three sets to beat Daniil Medvedev and capture the 2023 US Open trophy on Sunday. It marked Djokovic’s 24th Grand Slam title, matching the feat previously only achieved by Margaret Court in women’s singles.

This was the first win at Flushing Meadows for Djokovic since 2018 and fourth US Open title in his career. He also made the tournament’s finals six more times.

Medvedev was expected to present a tough challenge for Djokovic, considering how he easily dealt with the world’s No.1 Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals. The 27-year-old player also managed to beat Djokovic at the same stage in 2021 in a convincing fashion.

However, Djokovic made a strong start, rushing to a 3-0 lead in the first set and not allowing Medvedev to get comfortable. Medvedev managed to take the 36-year-old Serbian to a tie-break in the second set but didn’t have enough resolve to avoid a 0-2 hole.

In the third set, Djokovic sensed that Medvedev was at the ropes and proceeded to find another gear that allowed him to put an end to any comeback attempts.

“I never imagined that I would be here standing with you talking about 24 Slams. I never thought that would be the reality,” said Djokovic after the match. “But the last couple of years, I felt I have a chance, I have a shot for history, and why not grab it if it’s presented?”

ATP world number 2 Daniil Medvedev stunned the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday night when he defeated tournament favorite Novak Djokovic in three straight sets to lift the US Open title. This is Medvedev’s first major ATP title.

Following his 6-4 6-4 6-4 victory, Medvedev acknowledged Djokovic’s talent during his victory speech, confirming: “I never said this to anybody, but I’ll say it right now. For me, you are the greatest tennis player in history.”

Medvedev’s victory ensured that Djokovic would not be able to complete a calendar-year Grand Slam, the first of its kind in men’s tennis since 1969. Furthermore, the ATP world number one was denied his 21st Grand Slam title, which would have seen him overtake both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in the race for the most career Grand Slam titles in ATP history.

The second-seeded Medvedev got his title fight off to a strong start, winning 20 of his first 23 service points. He also served 16 aces and hit 38 winners in all; 11 more than his Serbian opponent.

Medvedev, whose service was only broken once throughout the match, lost just one set throughout the tournament.

Novak Djokovic’s bid to complete a calendar-year Grand Slam and get a record 21st Grand Slam is alive and well. Despite falling behind to Matteo Berrettini in the US Open quarterfinals on Wednesday night, Djokovic bounced back to beat the Italian and progress to the next round.

The match against Berrettini started in the same fashion as Djokovic’s previous two matches. He lost the first set and it seemed that a big upset was possible. However, just like against Kei Nishikori and Jenson Brooksby, the world’s No. 1 tennis player asserted his dominance in the following three sets and strolled to an easy win.

By beating Berrettini, Djokovic improved to 26-0 in Grand Slam matches this season. He only has to claim two more wins to etch his name in the history books and become the first male player since 1969 and Rod Laver to win all four Grand Slams in a single season. Earlier in 2020, he claimed the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon titles.

The first obstacle standing in his way of this historic feat will be the No. 4-seeded Alexander Zverev, whom he faces in the semifinals.

“I’m pumped,” Djokovic told reporters during a press conference. “The bigger the challenge, the more glory in overcoming it.”

The second semifinals match in the men’s draw will pit Canadian Felix Auger Aliassime, who currently ranks No. 15 on the ATP list, and the world’s second-ranked player Daniil Medvedev.

Following his win at the Australian Open and 18-matches unbeaten streak to start the year, Novak Djokovic seemed poised for a dominant run in 2020. But things didn’t work out that way for the world’s No. 1 ranked tennis player.

First, the coronavirus outbreak caused chaos in tennis, resulting in the cancelation of Wimbledon, where Djokovic would have been the overwhelming favorite. The 33-year-old Serbian was then defaulted from U.S. Open for hitting a line judge with the ball while falling in the French Open finals to Rafael Nadal.

Speaking with reporters about how 2020 unfolded for him, Djokovic said that he “regrets” he didn’t manage to pick up at least one more Grand Slam.

“There is a lingering regret that I didn’t win either the U.S. Open or the Roland Garros this year,” said Djokovic. “I was in outstanding form at both events but having reached the French Open final, I was beaten by a player who was much better on the day.”

Another Grand Slam win would get Novak Djokovic closer to his rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Djokovic currently has 17 titles, compared to Federer and Nadal’s 20.

There is pressure on Djokovic to surpass this number if he wants to get into consideration for the greatest player of all time. It is something he acknowledges but doesn’t feel overwhelmed with.

“Pressure has been a part of my life for a long time, and I’ve learned how to deal with it,” Djokovic explained. “If I retired now, I’d be happy with everything I have achieved, but I still enjoy competing, and every tournament I enter gives me so much motivation and joy.”

Despite expressing concerns about this year’s US Open on multiple occasions in the past, the No. 1 male tennis player in the world Novak Djokovic will take part in the tournament after all.

Djokovic revealed the news on social media, adding that he’ll also play at Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, which is scheduled to start on August 20th.

“I have trained hard with my team and got my body in shape so I am ready to adapt to new conditions,” said Djokovic. “I’ve done all the check-ups to make sure I am fully recovered, and I am ready to get back on court fully committed to playing my best tennis.”

Djokovic previously criticized the US Open organizers for strict safety and health protocols that are being planned due to coronavirus pandemic. However, after contracting the virus himself during the exhibition tournament he organized in his native Serbia, the 33-year-old player obviously changed his mind about the restrictions.

Novak Djokovic will chase his 18th Grand Slam and fourth US Open title in 2020. He’s set to have an easier path than in some previous years, as his biggest rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal decided to sit out the tournament. Federer had to skip the event due to surgery, while Nadal got out due to coronavirus concerns.

US Open is officially set to start on August 31st, and it will be the first Grand Slam tournament since the tennis season resumed.

Novak Djokovic might not make it to Flushing Meadows this year. The Serbian tennis player recently told the media in his national country that he is thinking about skipping the U.S. Open if the 2020 edition of the tournament ends up taking place.

The reason why Djokovic isn’t open to playing the tournament this year is possible coronavirus pandemic-related restrictions that might be imposed on the participants. This reportedly includes 14-day quarantine, restricted access to courts, and limited ability to move around New York.

According to the three-time U.S. Open champion, many other tennis players also have a negative stance about coming to New York and playing under these “extreme conditions.”

“Most of the players I have talked to were quite negative on whether they would go there,” Djokovic told Serbian national broadcaster RTS. “For me currently, as things stand, most probably the season will continue on clay at the beginning of September.”

According to this, Novak Djokovic would return to competitive tennis at French Open, where he would chase his second title, and 18th Grand Slam win. The tournament, initially scheduled to take place in late May, was recently postponed for September due to the coronavirus pandemic.
