The New York Mets owner Steve Cohen still hasn’t lost hope that his team can turn things around after a disappointing start of the 2023 campaign. However, he might soon lose patience with some of those responsible for poor results.

Speaking with the media on Wednesday, Cohen said that he is prepared to make some tough decisions if the Mets don’t improve by the trade deadline.

“All is not lost yet, but it’s getting late,” Cohen said. “I’m preparing my management team for all possibilities. If they don’t get better, we have decisions to make at the trade deadline. That’s not my preferred end result. We’re preparing all contingencies.”

The Mets currently find themselves fourth in NL East with a 36-43 record. They have lost seven out of their last 10 games and are 8.5 games removed from the wild-card spot. This is despite having the biggest payroll in sports at $360 million.

Cohen hinted that the decisions he was talking about would revolve around trading players rather than firing general manager Billy Eppler and manager Buck Showalter.

“In an unfortunate circumstance, if I can find some ways to improve our farm system, that’s the path we take,” Cohen added. “Cause I’m willing to do it.”

The New York Mets starting pitcher Jose Quintana has suffered a small stress fracture in his fifth rib on his left side, the team confirmed on Monday. Expected to play in the World Baseball Classic for Colombia, Quintana’s availability for the start of the new MLB season has now been put into question.

Quintana departed from his spring training outing on Sunday after experiencing side tightness, after which he withdrew from the World Baseball Classic. He is now scheduled to travel to New York for further imaging.

With Quintana’s return date still unknown, the Mets will need to determine how they will fill the void left by their star left-handed pitcher. Among the team’s existing lineup are fellow stars Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander who are followed by the arrival from Japan Kodai Senga and veteran Carlos Carrasco.

Should the Mets require additional firepower, they could turn to David Peterson and Tylor Megill or Elieser Hernandez and Joey Lucchesi, who are set to begin the season in the minor leagues.

Quintana joined the Mets on a two-year, $26 million contract this offseason. The move came after he posted a 2.01 ERA in 12 starts for the St. Louis Cardinals last season.

The New York Mets are reportedly close to finding their next manager. According to ESPN, former Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter and Houston Astros bench coach Joe Espada are current favorites for the vacancy, being recently invited for the second round of interviews. Matt Quatraro, the bench coach for the Tampa Bay Rays, is also getting another look.

The Mets have been searching for a new manager since parting ways with Luis Rojas at the end of the 2021 MLB season. Rojas spent two seasons on the job with the New York team finishing below .500 and missing the postseason in both years.

Showalter has the strongest resume out of all potential candidates, having served as a manager for the New York Yankees, the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Texas Rangers, and the Orioles throughout his career. He led his teams to five playoff appearances, including AL Championship Series with Baltimore in 2014, and has won the AL Manager of the Year three times. His managerial record stands at 1,551-1,517.

Espada has been in conversation for managerial jobs in MLB for several years now. The former minor league player coached in the majors since 2010 when he was hired as Miami Marlins hitting coach. He also worked as an infield coach and third base coach with the Yankees before taking his current position with the Astros in 2017.

Quatraro spent a decade working as a coach and manager in the minors before becoming an assistant hitting coach for the Cleveland Guardians in 2014. He joined the Rays in 2017 as a third base coach and was promoted to bench coach role a year after.

Although we’re deep into the MLB offseason, All-Star center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. is still without a team. According to the latest reports, a reason for this might be his high demands in free agency.

Bradley has been attracting interest from several teams in recent weeks, with the Boston Red Sox and New York Mets being mentioned as his strongest suitors. Still, the player is taking his time in the process and is waiting for someone to give him a “significant contract”, according to the New York Post’s Mike Puma.

Bradley spent his entire MLB career with the Red Sox, helping the organization win the World Series in 2018 and being named ALCS MVP in the process. He had a productive campaign in the shortened 2020 MLB season, playing in 55 games and posting a batting average of .283 with seven home runs and 22 RBIs.

Boston is reportedly willing to give it their best to keep Bradley on board, but their best might not be close to enough. The organization is currently trending towards a rebuild and is not interested in giving out large contracts.

The Mets, on the other hand, might be more tempted to give Jackie Bradley the contract he is asking for. The new ownership showed a willingness to spend money in order to make the Mets competitive, and having a reliable veteran like Bradley in center field would definitely contribute to that cause.

All-Star catcher James McCann had many suitors in this year’s free agency but ended up passing on all other opportunities to sign with the New York Mets on a four-year, $40.6 million deal. As it turns out, however, it wasn’t the money that helped the Mets seal the deal with McCann.

Speaking with reporters on Thursday during his introductory press conference, McCann revealed that the main reason he favored the Mets was the fact that the franchise is “trending in the right direction.”

“I think one thing for me, personally, was the direction the New York Mets were headed in,” said McCann. “From the moment we heard from the Mets this offseason, they were definitely a team-high on the list. Everything is trending in the right direction.”

McCann also explained that the conversations with the Mets’ brass and their vision for the team’s future made the decision easy for him.

“It really just kinda pushed it over the edge and made it an easy decision.” he added.

James McCann is coming off a productive season with the Chicago White Sox in which he batted career-high .289 with seven home runs and 15 RBIs. He is now expected to replicate this success in New York and finally give stability with the catcher position to the Mets.

New York Mets’ pitcher Jacob deGrom continues to make his case for Cy Young award by making history. deGrom allowed just two runs against Miami Marlin on Tuesday, which meant this was his 26th straight start in which he allowed three or fewer runs per game. By doing so, the 30-year-old broke 108 years old MLB record, previously held by Chicago Cubs’ Leslie “King” Cole.

Cole went on a similar run during 1910 season, when he had 25 straight starts in which he allowed three or fewer runs per game.

Jacob deGrom is having an incredible season by all standards, with his latest stats for 2018 including 1.71 ERA, 2.06 FIP, 195 innings pitched, 239 strikeouts and 0.95 WHIP. His ERA is the best in the league at the moment, with his closest rival, Philadelphia Phillies’ Aaron Nola, having a full half-run ERA worse with 2.29.

Still, despite deGrom’s heroics, the New York Mets can’t get to a winning record. During his record-breaking run of 26th straight starts, Mets went 9-17. In this season, he is 8-9 as a starter.

Jacob deGrom made his debut in the majors in 2014. During his four years in New York, he posted a 53–40 record with 2.69 ERA. deGrom won the NL Rookie of the Year and has two All-Star appearances.
