The New York Rangers announced on Tuesday that they had hired Peter Laviolette as their new head coach. Laviolette joins the Rangers as a Stanley Cup winner and the eighth-winningest head coach in NHL history.

The Rangers previously parted ways with Gerard Gallant after suffering a disappointing first-round exit in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Laviolette was an obvious choice for the Rangers. He is one of the most experienced head coaches in the league, a proven winner, and has ties with the franchise. Laviolette made 12 appearances with the Rangers in the 1988–89 season, which ended up being his only NHL action as a professional player.

Peter Laviolette won the Stanley Cup with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006 and made two more Stanley Cup Finals with the Philadelphia Flyers and the Nashville Predators. Laviolette has 752 career wins in 21 years as a head coach in NHL, which is the most all-time by an American-born coach.

Laviolette spent the past three seasons coaching the Washington Capitals. The franchise opted not to extend his contract following a disappointing 2022–23 campaign that saw the Capitals miss the playoffs for the first time in nine years.

“Peter’s impressive résumé, which includes winning a Stanley Cup and advancing to the final with three different teams, has made him one of the most respected coaches in the league,” said Rangers’ owner James Dolan in a statement. “As we move forward in our goal to consistently contend for the Stanley Cup, I am confident that Peter is the right head coach to lead our team.”

Patrick Kane, the New York Rangers’ latest signing, expressed his gratitude after making his debut for his new team on Thursday night at Madison Square Garden. Kane was unable to score during 19:36 of ice time in what was a 5-3 defeat for the Rangers to the Ottawa Senators.

“My first game as a Ranger was a pretty cool experience. Obviously, I would’ve liked to play a little bit better and come out with the win. But hopefully, it’ll come. I haven’t played in a little bit. Maybe a little bit rusty,” Kane stated.

Experiencing a warm welcome from the Rangers fans, Kane expressed his enthusiasm to acclimate to his new team. The 34-year-old winger emphasized that he remains eager to adjust to his new team and build strong partnerships with his teammates.

Kane noted the importance of the Rangers’ next game against the Boston Bruins on Saturday, after which the team is set to have four days off before their next game. The Rangers’ new star player stated that he intends to use the time off to settle in and improve his performance for his new team.

The New York Rangers gave defenseman Tony DeAngelo a two-year, $9.6 million extension back in October, believing he would turn into one of their franchise cornerstones. Four months later, they’ve now decided to let him go.

The Rangers confirmed on Sunday that DeAngelo was placed on waivers, which effectively ended his stint with the organization. He is set to become a free agent since no other team has yet claimed him.

The Rangers didn’t want to get into the details of their decision, with head coach David Quinn saying that the organization decided it was best if the two sides go their separate ways.

“Things happen in pro sports, and that was a decision the organization made,” said Quinn. “It’s part of the business. It’s a decision we made. We’ll see how it plays out.”

According to reports, however, the Rangers parting ways with Tony DeAngelo has something to do with his problematic behavior and performance struggles in the 2020-21 NHL season. This included a recent altercation with goaltender Alexandar Georgiev and an inability to be productive when on the ice.

DeAngelo, who was the 19th overall pick in 2014, enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in 2019-20 in which he scored 15 goals and 38 assists. This season, however, he only has one assist and no goals in six games.

Despite being swept by in Stanley Cup Qualifiers, New York Rangers will finish the season on a high note after landing the No. 1 overall pick in 2020 NHL Draft. The Rangers were awarded the pick on Monday night as part of the Second Phase of the NHL Draft Lottery.

Rangers entered the lottery with a 12.5 percent chance to get the top pick.

“I couldn’t believe it really,” said Rangers’ general manager Jeff Gorton. “And then I started thinking right away, wow, this is happening. No.1. We’re picking at No.1.”

This will be the second time for NY Rangers to pick first in the draft after they took Andre Veilleux with No. 1 in 1965. Rangers picked No. 2 in last year’s draft, taking Finnish winger Kaapo Kakko.

Many believe that this year’s first overall pick will be Canadian winger Alexis Lafreniere. Lafreniere spent the previous three season playing in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, where he had 297 points (114 goals and 183 assists) in 173 games.

The Second Phase of the NHL Draft Lottery also assigned picks from No.9 to No.15 to the remaining seven teams that were eliminated from Stanley Cup Qualifiers. The No.16 to No.31 will be assigned according to Stanley Cup Playoffs performances, while No.2 to No.8 were set in the First Phase of the NHL Draft Lottery.

“Our competitive balance is so extraordinary the differences between and among our clubs isn’t all that great,” said NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman. “So under these unusual circumstances, this made the most sense and was fair, despite who you root for and what result [it] ultimately obtains.”
