The post Ex-Broncos QB Russell Wilson Agrees to a 1-Year Deal With the Steelers appeared first on yoursportspot.com.
]]>Reportedly, Wilson agreed to a one-year deal for a veteran’s minimum. He will earn an additional $36.6 million from the Denver Broncos, who will officially release him when the new league year starts.
After two underwhelming seasons with the Broncos, Wilson was informed last that the franchise was moving on from him. Considering that Wilson was just about to enter the five-year, $242.6 million extension he signed with the franchise in 2022, Denver was left with $85 million in dead cap.
Despite not being officially released, Wilson was granted permission from the Broncos to discuss terms with interested teams. He reportedly had several suitors, with the teams being intrigued by the opportunity to bring a future Hall of Famer on a cheap deal. Eventually, Wilson decided to go to Pittsburgh, likely believing the Steelers give him the best shot for starting and playing in the Super Bowl.
Throughout the offseason, the Steelers publicly stated their support for signal-caller Kenny Pickett, their first-round pick in 2022. However, it makes sense for the franchise to get a veteran option like Wilson, considering Pickett was largely inconsistent in his two years with the franchise and is the only QB they have under contract after Mason Rudolph became a free agent and Mitch Trubisky got released.

We communicate continually often. I don’t imagine it’s going to be an issue, and I imagine it’s going to get done in a timely manner at the appropriate time, but my mindset is to coach his football team.”
Back in 2021, Tomlin signed a three-year contract extension with the Steelers, due to expire this year. While rumors circulated in 2023 about Tomlin considering departing the Steelers, he dismissed such speculation, insisting that he never considered walking away from the role.

]]>Pickett underwent an ankle surgery in early December and has progressed well in his rehabilitation. The sophomore signal-caller is expected to return to practice this week, but he won’t be getting his job back.
“I anticipate him being available to practice, “Tomlin said of Pickett following the Steelers’ 23-30 win over the Seattle Seahawks. “That being said, we’ve got to leave the ball in Mason Rudolph’s hands. He’s done a good job, and we’ve done a good job in the most recent two weeks. We’ve taken care of the ball. He’s taking care of the ball.”
Mitch Trubisky initially replaced Pickett as the Steelers starter, but a string of poor performances caused him to be benched late in Week 15 game against the Indianapolis Colts. Rudolph, who was a third-stringer to start the season, stepped in and provided a badly needed spark for Pittsburgh’s offense.
Rudolph threw for 290 yards and two touchdowns in a Week 16 win over the Cincinnati Bengals and followed that with a 274 passing yards, 75.0% pass completion performance against the Seahawks.
The Steelers are currently 9-7 and can secure a playoff spot with a win over the Baltimore Ravens in the final week of the regular season. They can also get in with a loss but need several results to go their way.

]]>The post Steelers Sign QB Mitch Trubisky to a New 3-Year Contract appeared first on yoursportspot.com.
]]>According to the official team announcement, Trubisky inked a new three-year deal that will keep him with the franchise through 2025. Trubisky previously had one year left on a two-year, $ $14.25 million contract he signed ahead of the 2022 season.
The Steelers haven’t disclosed the financial terms of Trubisky’s new deal, but NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that he’ll earn $19.4 million across three years. If he meets certain incentives, like playing time, the value of the contract can max out at $33 million.
Mitch Trubisky signed with the Steelers last offseason after spending one year as Josh Allen’s backup with the Buffalo Bills. Trubisky then beat Rudolph and 2022’s first-round pick Kenny Pickett to win the starting job.
The Steelers struggled on offense to start the campaign, promising head coach Mike Tomlin to bench Trubisky in favor of Pickett in Week 4. Trubisky spent the rest of the season as a backup but got to start one more game down the stretch due to Pickett’s injury.
Trubisky finished 2022 with a 2-3 record as a starter, having thrown for 1,252 yards, four touchdowns, and five interceptions.

]]>Pittsburgh decided to cut Jack after acquiring former Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots linebacker Elandon Roberts on a two-year deal.
Roberts is a two-time Super Bowl champion with the Patriots and has proven to be a key member of the Dolphins’ lineup during his three seasons in Miami, starting 43 of the 47 games he appeared in. During his time with the Dolphins, Roberts made 251 tackles, including a career-record 107 tackles last season.
While the Steelers chose to go with the three-inside linebacker rotation of Jack, Robert Spillane, and Devin Bush last season, it seems as if all three players’ tenure with the Steelers is coming to an end, with Spillane signing for the Las Vegas Raiders on free agency and Bush taking a visit to the Seattle Seahawks. Mark Robinson will be the only current Steelers inside linebacker returning to the team for the 2023 season as a result.

]]>Trubisky, second overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, signed with the Steelers on a two-year deal in the offseason. The North Carolina product was named Week 1 starter but failed to do enough to keep the job. He was benched midway through the Week 4 game against the New York Jets for Pickett and never managed to get his job back.
“I’m looking forward to the opportunity,” Trubisky said after the decision was made public. “I’ll be ready to go. I feel like I had a good week of practice. I’m ready to bounce back.”
The news is somewhat a surprise since it seemed that the Steelers might lean towards third-string QB Mason Rudolph to start against the Panthers. Rudolph will become a free agent after the season, and it would make sense for Pittsburgh to get another look at him in game action before making a decision. The 27-year-old even got endorsed by wideout Diontae Johnson earlier in the week, but that didn’t seem to help much.
The Steelers are currently 5-8 and have all but lost their chances to make the playoffs.

]]>According to reports, Fitzpatrick was feeling unwell at practice, which resulted in tests being performed that indicated that he was in need of the appendectomy procedure. The Steelers later announced that he would be unavailable for the game against the New Orleans Saints due to appendicitis.
In addition to missing the Saints’ game, Fitzpatrick is not expected to be available against the Bengals. There is also little likelihood of the safety managing to participate in the Steelers’ clash with the Indianapolis Colts on November 28.
The Steelers activated safety Damontae Kazee from injured reserve, whom they will hope will be able to step in during Fitzpatrick’s absence. Elijah Riley was also activated from the practice squad as an additional backup option.
Fitzpatrick has not been the only NFL player to recently undergo an appendectomy. Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow also underwent the procedure before training camp and was consequently sidelines for two and a half weeks.

]]>Watt tore his pectoral muscle late in the fourth quarter of a Week 1 win over the Cincinnati Bengals and was initially set to miss around six weeks. But the 27-year-old now decided to also undergo a procedure to resolve a lingering knee issue and is likely to miss up to two extra weeks.
While Watt’s return can’t come soon enough for the Steelers, it is unlikely the team will rush their player back on the field until he’s ready. This means that the most likely target date for Watt is after the Steelers’ bye in Week 9.
T.J. Watt, who won the NFL Defensive Player of the Year honors last season, seemed poised for another big year. He harassed the Bengals’ offense in Week 1, making six tackles, 1.0 sacks, and grabbing one interception.
Without Watt, the Steelers largely struggled and were unable to contain their opponents. Since he went down, Pittsburgh’s defense only had three sacks while losing all three of their games.

]]>Watt got hurt during the Bengals’ final drive in the regulation that ended up tying the game. He was seen exiting the game while holding his left side. The reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year is scheduled to undergo an MRI that will determine the full extent of the injury.
If the tests show Watt is dealing with a fully torn pec, he will most likely need to undergo surgery that will rule him out for several months. The usual recovery is around four months, although his brother J.J. Watt returned from a similar injury in just two months in 2019.
T.J. Watt had a great game before going down, getting six tackles, 1.0 sacks, and one interception. In his absence, the Steelers will have to rely on a pair of former undrafted OLBs Malik Reed and Jamir Jones. Reed came to Pittsburgh in a trade with the Denver Broncos last month, while Jones was claimed off waivers after being released by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the preseason.
Steelers will play their Week 2 game at home next Sunday against the New England Patriots.

]]>According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafalo, Johnson will earn $36.71 million from his two-year extension. He’ll get $27 million guaranteed and $19 million in the first year of his contract.
“I felt it in my gut it was the right move for me and my family,” said Johnson after the deal became official. “I am just glad to get back to work. I love being a Steeler. I love it here. Just being around my teammates, the atmosphere, the energy they show every day. I feel like I made the right choice to continue to be here for a long time.”
Diontae Johnson entered the league as the Steelers’ third-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. In his rookie season, he had a prominent role on offense while also handling the punt return duties. The latter got him a Second-team All-Pro nod.
In the following two years, Johnson established himself as the Steelers’ go-to wideout. That was especially the case last season when he delivered a career year that included 107 catches for 1,161 yards and eight touchdowns. These were all career-highs for the Toledo product.
