Real Salt Lake has secured the services of U.S. international forward Bobby Wood. According to The Athletic’s Sam Stejskal, Wood inked a pre-contract with RSL that will see him join the MLS team after his contract with the German club Hamburg SV expires in June.

Wood, who had other suitors from the MLS, including FC Cincinnati, reportedly inked a deal that runs through the 2022 season. In terms of salary, the 28-year-old player is expected to receive “mid-level targeted allocation money”.

Stejskal adds that there is a good chance Wood leaves Germany before his contract expires. He is reportedly engaged in talks with Hamburg and would like to get an early termination considering he hasn’t been playing much lately.

In 2020-21, Wood played in 11 games, but all of his appearances came from the bench, and he totaled only 119 minutes of soccer. He managed to score once this season.

Bobby Wood secured a transfer to Hamburg in 2016 after a prolific outing with Union Berlin that saw him score 17 goals in 2015-16. But his goalscoring form took a significant dip since then, and he only managed to find the net 12 times in the past four years.

The struggles in front of the goal caused Wood to lose his place in the United States men’s national team. He hasn’t been part of the USMNT since Gregg Berhalter took over, making his last appearance in October 2018.

Real Salt Lake’s legendary midfielder Kyle Beckerman has decided to put an end to his professional soccer career.

Beckerman, who played 21 seasons in the MLS with the Miami Fusion, Colorado Rapids, and RSL, announced his decision via social media earlier this week. The news comes just two weeks after the 38-year-old veteran was named one of the MLS’s “25 Greatest Players of All-Time”.

“There’s no need for a long farewell when I’ve been playing each game as though it could be my last,” said Beckerman in a statement. “My goodbyes have been entrenched in every pre-game huddle, tackle, pass, celebration, and each post-game lap around the field.”

Kyle Beckerman started his pro career in Miami in 2000, making three appearances before the club was shut down by the league two years after. Beckerman entered the 2002 MLS Dispersal Draft, where he was picked up 11th overall by the Rapids.

Beckerman spent the next five and a half seasons in Colorado, developing into an important player for the club. Despite this, he was traded midway through 2007 to Real Salt Lake.

With RSL, Beckerman began his path to greatness, establishing himself as a team leader and taking over the captain’s armband in his first full season with the franchise. He followed this up by helping the team to their only MLS Cup win in 2009 and went on to play a total of 411 games with RSL, scoring 35 goals and earning six All-Star nods in the process.

Beckerman was also a member of the United States men’s national soccer team between 2007 and 2016, making 58 appearances for his country and winning a CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2013.

Wednesday proved to be an eventful day in North American soccer, with 10 MLS teams facing off in the latest round of action.

Among those were Western Conference title contenders Minnesota United FC, who played against the 9th placed FC Dallas. Despite going a man down in the 82nd minute due to Romain Metarine’s red card, Minnesota held on for a 3-2 victory. These three points helped them soar above Sporting Kansas City into the Western Conference top spot.

Shifting focus to the Eastern Conference and former leaders Toronto FC defeated rivals Montreal Impact 2-1. This result allowed Toronto to narrow the deficit between them and conference leaders Columbus Crew to just two points.

In what was the shock of the evening, Real Salt Lake defeated close rival LAFC by an unexpected scoreline of 3-0. While LAFC dominated possession and managed to take one shot more than the victors, it was Salt Lake who were able to take advantage of their many opportunities on goal.

Moving back to the east coast and MLS newcomers Inter Miami managed to secure their second victory of the season—a 2-1 win over eight-placed Atlanta United. This sees Inter Miami finally move out from the foot of the table.

Finally, we stop off at DSG Park, where Colorado Rapids were held to a 1-1 draw by the visiting Houston Dynamo. Colorado remain in 10th place in the Western Conference, while Houston are in sixth.

Despite leading Real Salt Lake to Western Conference Semifinals this year, interim head coach Freddy Juarez won’t make his job permanent. Instead, the team is reportedly looking to bring back the team legend Jason Kreis.

According to multiple reports, Real will interview Kreis for both head coach and general manager positions. Reportedly, the two sides had initial discussions in September, and they will continue talks in the coming days.

Kreis is currently serving as a manager of United States U23 sides, looking to get the team to the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020, while also acting as a senior academy director at Inter Miami CF. His most recent MLS job was coaching Orlando City from 2016 to 2018.

Jason Kreis has deep ties with Real Salt Lake as he was the franchise’s first player in history when he joined from Dallas Burn in 2004. Kreis also scored the team’s first goal and went on to make a total of 58 appearances in three years.  Following his retirement as a player in 2007, he was named Real’s head coach.

Kreis spent six seasons as Salt Lake’s manager, during which he led the team to the MLS Cup win in 2009. He posted 112-85-64 managerial record before departing to New York in 2013 to become the first head coach of NYCFC.
