Over the course of the past 11 seasons in the NFL, Rob “Gronk” Gronkowski built a reputation as one of the greatest tight ends in history – but all good things must come to an end. The four-time Super Bowl champion announced his retirement on Tuesday via social media.

This isn’t the first time Gronk announced he’s stepping away from football, but it doesn’t seem he’ll be coming back this time around. He initially retired after ending his run with the New England Patriots in 2018 but was later traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he reunited with Tom Brady and won the final Super Bowl of his career.

Gronk revealed he’s stepping away from football in a lengthy social media statement, where he thanked the Buccaneers for trusting him to come back to play and help build a championship team.

“I will now be going back into my retirement home, walking away from football again with my head held high knowing I gave it everything I had, good or bad, every time I stepped out on the field,” wrote Gronkowski.

During his time with the Patriots, Gronk won three Super Bowl titles and became a five-time Pro Bowl selection. He also set several NFL records, including most receiving touchdowns and most total touchdowns in a season by a tight end.

Quarterback Tom Brady has already decided to return for another run with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2022. However, his favorite target, tight end Rob Gronkowski, is still mulling on whether to do the same.

Gronkowski, who is currently a free agent, spoke about his future in the NFL with TMZ Sports on Tuesday and said he is not ready to return to football.

“Right now, I’m not ready to get back out on that field,” Gronkowski told TMZ Sports. “I’m not ready to commit to the game of football right now.”

Gronkowski already retired from professional football after the 2018 season. However, his retirement only lasted one year before he decided to return to NFL and follow Brady to Tampa Bay. The duo won the Super Bowl in their first season with the Bucs before being eliminated in the Divisional Round in the 2022 postseason.

Gronkowski had a productive campaign last season despite missing five games due to various injuries. He made 55 receptions for 802 yards while adding six receiving touchdowns.

If Gronkowski decides he still wants to continue playing, his return to the Buccaneers shouldn’t be a forgone conclusion, even with Brady around. There are reportedly multiple other Super Bowl contenders who would be happy to add Gronk to their roster, with the Buffalo Bills being a prime candidate.

Tight end Rob Gronkowski returned to NFL after one year of retirement ahead of the 2020 season and found out that the league looked a lot different. The coronavirus pandemic affected lots of things in and around the NFL, forcing Gronkowski to adjust while also robbing him of the chance to have a full offseason with his new team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

But this didn’t stop Gronk from finding a way to have some fun.

Like all NFL players, Gronkowski had to take part in a virtual offseason that included filming his workouts and sending them to the Bucs’ coaching staff. While the 31-year-old veteran was methodical in his approach initially, it quickly got “boring” for him. So he pulled a genius prank on Tampa Bay strength and conditioning coach Anthony Piroli.

When he was doing sprints, Gronkowski would film a week-worth of material in just one day. He would swap the shirts he had after few reps, making it look like it was a different workout. Then, he would just roll-out a clip with a different shirt each day.

“I started tricking him. I would bring my shirt out, and then I would bring another shirt out, so when I’m running the sprints, I would film myself, like, 15 times for that session,” Gronk admitted in a recent interview with Fox. “But I would run it in a couple of different shirts because you only had to send in two or three reps. So when the next time came, I didn’t have to film myself because I already filmed myself running in a different shirt every time on that one day.”

According to Gronkowski, Piroli didn’t notice anything unusual and completely bought into the scam.

The Bucs coaching staff will probably forgive Rob Gronkowski for his antics, especially since he was productive for them in 2020. He had 45 receptions for 623 yards and seven touchdowns in the regular season while adding two catches for 43 yards in the playoffs.

Pro Bowl tight end Rob Gronkowski is coming back to NFL. Gronkowski’s agent Drew Rosenhaus revealed on Tuesday during an appearance on ESPN’s SportsCenter that his client unretired and will play with Tampa Bay Buccaneers next season, teaming up again with quarterback Tom Brady.

Gronkowski initially retired following the 2018 season as a member of New England Patriots, citing injuries and mental health as reasons for walking away from pro football after nine seasons. But it looks like the year off made the 30-year-old reconsider his decision.

“I’m back. I always said when I have that feeling and it feels right, I will be ready to take the field again. And I have that feeling. I’m ready,” Gronk told FoxSports, confirming the news.

Gronkowski was reportedly only willing to end his retirement if he was to play with Brady again. Patriots honored his wishes, agreeing to trade him to Tampa Bay in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Bucs confirmed the transaction on social media later on Tuesday.

“Rob Gronkowski is one of the best tight ends in NFL history and he plays the game with the type of passion and desire that sets him apart,” said Buccaneers’ general manager Jason Licht in a statement. “Rob has played his entire career alongside Tom Brady, and their accomplishments speak for themselves. Together they have developed the type of chemistry on and off the field that is crucial to success.”

Rob Gronkowski spent his entire career with New England Patriots, helping the team win three Super Bowls. During his time as a pro, Gronkowski established himself as one of the best tight ends in the history of the game, earning four First-team All-Pro honors and being selected to Pro Bowl five times.

Gronkowski currently sits at 521 career receptions for 7,861 yards and 79 touchdowns.

Former New England Patriots’ tight end Rob Gronkowski surprised the NFL in March, announcing his retirement from football at age of 29. Since then, Gronkowski has stayed firm in his decision, rejecting countless rumors and reports about his proposed return. Still, that didn’t stop them from surfacing again and again.

The latest report about Gronkowski’s return to football came from respected NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport. According to Rapoport’s recent story, Patriots’ owner Robert Kraft is trying to get Gronkowski to unretire for their upcoming playoff run.

Rapoport reports that Kraft met with Gronkowski when the five-times Pro Bowler was cleaning out his locker and told him he wants him to return for “November, December, and a playoff run.” New England’s owner also said that the team would welcome him and everyone hopes he can change his mind.

However, despite Kraft’s attempts, Rob Gronkowski seems like he is staying put. Rapoport says that a source close to the 30-year-old told him that Gronkowski is remaining by his retirement despite the efforts to put him back on the field.

Also, there is not much time left for Gronkowski to get on the field if he would be interested in that. NFL rules require a player to get off the reserve/retired list before Week 13 in order to be eligible to play in the season. This means that if Gronkowski doesn’t return in November, he won’t dress up in 2019 for sure.

Despite playing just nine seasons in the league, Gronkowski managed to have a Hall of Fame-worthy career. He won three Super Bowl with the Pats, while also earning five Pro Bowl appearances and four First-Team All-Pro honors.

It all started at 20 years old on stage at the NFL draft when my dream came true, and now here I am about to turn 30 in a few months with a decision I feel is the biggest of my life so far. I will be retiring from the game of football today. I am so grateful for the opportunity that Mr. Kraft and Coach Belichick gave to me when drafting my silliness in 2010. My life experiences over the last 9 years have been amazing both on and off the field. The people I have meet, the relationships I have built, the championships I have been apart of, I just want to thank the whole New England Patriots organization for every opportunity I have been giving and learning the great values of life that I can apply to mine. Thank you to all of Pats Nation around the world for the incredible support since I have been apart of this 1st class organization. Thank you for everyone accepting who I am and the dedication I have put into my work to be the best player I could be. But now its time to move forward and move forward with a big smile knowing that the New England Patriots Organization, Pats Nation, and all my fans will be truly a big part of my heart for rest of my life. It was truly an incredible honor to play for such a great established organization and able to come in to continue and contribute to keep building success. To all my current and past teammates, thank you for making each team every year special to be apart of. I will truly miss you guys. Cheers to all who have been part of this journey, cheers to the past for the incredible memories, and a HUGE cheers to the uncertain of whats next.

Gronkowski will go down as one of the best players at his position in the history of the game. Since being drafted in the second round by the Patriots back in 2010, Gronkowski was named to five Pro Bowls and made four first-team All-Pro lists.

He finishes his career with 521 receptions, 7,861 receiving yards, and 79 receiving touchdowns. He even led the league in touchdown receptions one season, when he finished with 17 in 2011.

He also has three Super Bowl rings after winning the game with his team in 2015, 2017, and 2019.

The affable, fun-loving University of Arizona graduate had struggled with various injuries in recent years, possibly a factor that influenced his decision to call it quits. He suffered a thigh, hip, and lung injury in recent seasons.

Gronkowski might go down in history as the top tight end in the history of football. But now, that career has come to an end.
