The Washington Commanders have fired coach Ron Rivera after the team failed to secure a playoff berth, finishing bottom of the NFC East with a 4-13 record. This comes on the same day that Commanders owner Josh Harris hired former Golden State Warriors general manager Bob Myers and former Minnesota Vikings GM Rick Spielman to assist in the hunt for a new head of football operations and head coach.

Joining the Commanders in 2020, Rivera led the team to the NFC East title in his debut season with the team, however, he was never able to produce a winning record since. During his four seasons in Washington, Rivera’s record stands at 26-40-1.

While Harris thanked Rivera for his service and called him a “good man” and “thoughtful leader”, he did not hide the fact that Rivera’s performances fell short of expectations. “To deliver upon our ultimate goal of becoming an elite franchise and consistently competing for the Super Bowl, there is a lot to do, and first we must establish a strong organizational infrastructure led by the industry’s best and most talented individuals,” Harris said, speaking of the search for a new head coach and head of football operations.

The Washington Football Team has lost their starting safety and one of their defense leaders, Landon Collins.

Collins suffered a non-contact injury in the team’s win against the Cowboys and was carted off the field. Sources close to the team believe that it is an Achilles injury that will force Collins to miss the rest of the season.

This is a huge loss for the Football Team’s defense. Washington signed Collins in 2019 as a free agent, giving him a six-year, $84 million year deal. He was picked in the second round of the 2015 draft by the New York Giants and has been selected to the Pro Bowl three times in his career.

One of the biggest problems for Washington and their coach Ron Rivera now is that the team does not have much depth at the position to fill Collins’ shoes. The next man in line is Deshazor Everett, who was signed by the team several seasons ago as an undrafted free agent. Washington also has seventh-round rookie safety Kamren Curl on the roster, who could see some playing time with Collins out.

Unfortunately for Washington, there are not many free agents available either. The most notable safety that isn’t on a team currently is vetarn Earl Thomas, who was released unceremoniously by the Baltimore Ravens this season.

Washington Football Team head coach Ron Rivera has announced that he has been diagnosed with cancer.

The 58-year-old coach has squamous cell carcinoma located on the lymph node, according to the team, which is a type of skin cancer that is usually treatable. Rivera said that the cancer was caught in the early stages and that he expects that it’s going to be very treatable and curable.

He told his team on Thursday about the cancer diagnosis. However, he said that nothing will change and that he plans on coaching this season while he is undergoing treatment. Rivera said that he felt a lump in his throat in early July and found out that it was cancer two weeks ago.

He added that his doctors are encouraging him to keep coaching and to stay physically active, although he does expect the treatment to slow him down a bit physically at some point.

Rivera also said that if he’s not able to coach because of the treatment, there is a Plan B for the team in place. However, he didn’t say what that would be. The obvious choice for an interim head coach would be defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio, who has served as head coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars and Oakland Raiders previously and is the only one on the coaching staff that has head coaching experience in the NFL.

This will be Rivera’s first year in Washington after coaching the Carolina Panthers for nine seasons.

Although it seemed that Carolina Panthers will ride it out with Ron Rivera as a head coach until the end of the season, that didn’t happen. Panthers’ announced on Tuesday that they have fired Rivera.

Panthers’ decision comes after the team suffered four straight losses which brought them down to 5-7 record and far away from playoffs. Rivera was in his ninth year as Carolina’s coach.

“I believe this is the best decision for the long-term success of our team,” said Panthers owner David Tepper in a statement. “I have a great deal of respect for Ron and the contributions he has made to this franchise and to this community. I wish him the best. I will immediately begin the search for the next head coach of the Carolina Panthers.”

This comes just days after Rivera brushed off the questions about his job status and said that he isn’t “worried” about his future with the organization. The 57-year-old was on a hot seat for some time now, but it is believed that Sunday’s embarrassing loss to Washington Redskins, who had just two wins entering the game, eventually sealed Rivera’s faith.

During his nine years with the franchise, Ron Rivera posted 76-63-1 record, being the coach with most wins in Carolina Panthers’ history. He led the team to four playoff appearances and made it to Super Bowl 50 in the 2015 NFL season. Rivera has also won two Coach of the Year awards.

Just like Carolina will begin their search for a new head coach, Rivera will also immediately start seeking another opportunity. He told the media on Wednesday that he will coach again and doesn’t intend to have a long break.

“My intent is to coach again,” Rivera said. “I love coaching. Not just coaching because it’s about winning football games, but coaching because you have an opportunity to impact young men and people. And that’s what I want to do.”
