The “Fitzmagic” has run out. Journeyman quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick reportedly made a decision to retire from the NFL after playing for 17 seasons and suiting up for nine teams.

Fitzpatrick didn’t make an official announcement but instead broke the news by sending a text to his former teammates. The screenshot of the text was later shared by ex-running back Fred Jackson, who played with Fitzpatrick during his time with the Buffalo Bills.

Fitzpatrick spent the 2022 NFL season with the Washington Commanders but didn’t play much. He suffered a hip injury in Week 1 and later underwent surgery that cost him the remainder of the campaign.

Coming out of Harvard in 2005, Ryan Fitzpatrick wasn’t predicted a long stay in the pros. He was a seventh-round selection by the Rams and the last quarterback off the board. However, it turned out that analysts didn’t get it quite right, as Fitzpatrick outlasted every QB in his class except Aaron Rodgers.

Fitzpatrick would go on to spend three seasons with the Rams, during which he made three starts, before embarking on stints with the Cincinnati Bengals, the Buffalo Bills, the New York Jets, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and four other franchises. He made at least one start with each team he played for.

Fitzpatrick wraps up his NFL journey with 34,990 passing yards, 223 passing touchdowns, and 169 interceptions. He holds a number of NFL records, including most consecutive games of 400 yards passing with three and most games with at least 400 passing yards in a single season with four.

Washington Football Team won’t get their veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick back in 2021. According to multiple sources, Fitzpatrick is set to have surgery on his hip that will rule him out for the remainder of the season.

Fitzpatrick came into the season as Washington’s starter but lasted only one quarter of the Week 1 game against the Los Angeles Chargers before hurting his hip. Although the team hoped he could return after several weeks, the 39-year-old never managed to heal properly to make that a reality.

Losing their starting quarterback is usually devastating for the team’s chances in any given season, but Washington managed to cope with Fitzpatrick’s absence quite well. This is mostly thanks to his backup Taylor Heinicke, who played great football after some early struggles and has his team in playoff contention. Washington is currently on a four-game winning streak that lifted them to a 6-6 record.

Ryan Fitzpatrick, on the other hand, will most likely have to look for a new team in 2022. He is on a one-year contract, and the emergence of Heinicke probably means that Washington won’t offer him an extension in March. Thanks to his experience and respectable resume, Fitzpatrick shouldn’t have problems landing a backup job in the NFL. Anything past that, however, is highly doubtful.

Throughout his 17 seasons in NFL, Fitzpatrick played for nine different teams, including Buffalo Bills, New York Jets, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He has 60.7 percent career completion while throwing for 34,990 yards and 223 touchdowns.

Ryan Fitzpatrick’s reign as the starting quarterback of the Washington Football Team lasted only two quarters. The veteran suffered a hip injury in the season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers, prompting the team to place him on the injured reserve list.

Fitzpatrick will have to miss at least three weeks of football after landing on the IR, but depending on the severity of the injury, he might be sidelined longer than that. In his absence, Taylor Heinicke will take over under center.

This was confirmed by Washington head coach Ron Rivera in a press conference on Monday, who added that he believes Heinicke and backup Kyle Allen can respond to the task.

“We like the guys we have; they’ve done good things for us. We’ll see what happens,” River said. “I’m as confident as I could be.”

Ryan Fitzpatrick, who joined Washington in free agency after spending two years with the Miami Dolphins, had a rough start against the Chargers. The 37-year-old star managed to complete three out of six passes attempted while throwing for 13 yards.

Fitzpatrick got hurt four minutes into the second period. The injury resulted from a tackle by Chargers defensive end Uchenna Nwosu, who landed on the veteran while bringing him down on the ground.

Stepping in for Fitzpatrick, Heinicke delivered an encouraging performance and finished the contest with 122 passing yards and a touchdown pass. Still, he couldn’t help the Washington Football Team to avoid defeat, as the Chargers ended up claiming the 20-16 win.

There has been a lot of talk lately about veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick retiring after the 2020 NFL season, but it appears that Fitzmagic could continue to grace NFL stadiums this year as well.

Speaking on the Pat McAfee Show on Tuesday, Fitzpatrick downplayed the possibility of ending his career and said that he still “wants to play.”

“For me personally, I have to take every offseason now and just reassess. I know these last two years have really re-lit that fire under me,” said Fitzpatrick. “I still want to play. I enjoy being out there playing.”

Fitzpatrick, who turned 38 in November, explained that he was open to returning to the Miami Dolphins or playing somewhere else.

“So, there’s a lot of thought that has to go into this thing, but I still love playing the game,” he added.

Ryan Fitzpatrick split the starting duties with rookie Tua Tagovailoa last season in Miami despite playing some of his best football in years. In seven starts, Fitzpatrick went 4-3 while throwing for 1792 yards, 12 touchdowns, and seven interceptions.

If he decides to return in 2021, Fitzpatrick will undoubtedly have a lot of interest around the league. This will especially be the case with teams that have young QBs or those looking for a bridge signal-caller.

After contemplating retirement following the end of the regular season, Miami Dolphins’ quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick decided he still wants to play football in 2020. Fitzpatrick recently made an appearance on ESPN’s Golic and Wingo on Friday and confirmed he’ll return next season and remain with the Dolphins.

Fitzpatrick, who turned 37 in November, played with eight different teams in the past 15 years he spent in the NFL. He was Dolphins’ starting QB for the better part of the last season, finishing 2019 with 3,529 passing yards and 20 touchdowns.

“It was a crazy roller coaster at the beginning of the year,” Fitzpatrick told Golic and Wingo. “There were a lot more dips on the down than up. It showed a lot for Brian Flores as a first-time head coach to keep the team, keep us interested, keep the intensity and practices at a high level, and even attention level of the guys.”

There is a chance that Ryan Fitzpatrick will remain Miami Dolphins’ starting QB as the team is going through a rebuilding phase. Miami also has Josh Rosen, 10th overall pick in 2018, on their roster but the 22-year-old isn’t expected to be part of the team’s long term plans.

Instead, the Dolphins are expected to take a franchise quarterback in the 2020 NFL Draft, where they hold the fifth overall pick. The most probable choice is Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa, but Oregon’s Justin Herbert also represents an intriguing option.
