A new star is joining the New York Yankees’ clubhouse. The storied franchise confirmed on Thursday that it acquired All-MLB outfielder Juan Soto in a trade with the San Diego Padres.

The Yankees will receive Soto and outfielder Trent Grisham while sending pitchers Michael King, Jhony Brito, Randy Vasquez, right-hand prospect Drew Thorpe, and veteran catcher Kyle Higashioka to the Padres.

The Padres gave up a massive package to the Washington Nationals in 2022 to bring Soto to San Diego. The franchise expected the deal would get them over the hump and establish them as a perennial playoff contender.

While the Padres reached the NL Championship Series in Soto’s first season with the franchise, they followed that up with a disappointing campaign in 2023 that saw them miss out on the postseason altogether. This, coupled with the fact that Soto is set to become a free agent next offseason and might command a $500+ million deal, prompted the general manager A.J. Preller to explore the market for the 25-year-old player.

The Yankees, themselves trying to bounce back after missing the playoffs, emerged as the most aggressive suitor for Soto, with the teams being engaged in negotiations for the past several weeks. At one point, it seemed that the deal was nowhere near to being completed, but intensive talks in recent days managed to get Preller and his New York counterpart Brian Cashman closer to their expectations and get the deal over the line.

Juan Soto received All-Star nods in each of his previous three seasons while also being honored with the Silver Slugger Award four consecutive times. He has a batting average of .284 with 160 homers and 483 RBIs.

The San Diego Padres have lost eight of their last 10 games and might now have an even harder time getting out of a slump after their star slugger Manny Machado was diagnosed with a small fracture in his left hand.

Machado was hit by a pitch in a 4-3 loss to the Kansas City Royals earlier this week, and it was initially believed he got away unscathed. However, further tests revealed that there is a fracture, and there is a possibility that the 30-year-old player will land on the injured list.

Speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Machado said that the swelling has come down, and he gained his range of motions. The Padres’ medical team is now monitoring the injury and will decide on the next steps in the following days.

“We’re kind of giving it a couple of days to let the bone heal for a little bit before we move on to something else,” Machado said while confirming IL is an option.

Manny Machado has struggled just like the rest of the Padres in 2023, batting .231 with five homers and 19 RBIs. Machado is in the first year of his massive 11-year, $350 million extension he signed with the Padres in the offseason.

The San Diego Padres’ spending spree from the offseason carried into the 2023 MLB season. According to multiple reports, the Padres agreed to a seven-year, $80 million extension with their All-Star second baseman Jake Cronenworth.

The extension will start in 2024 and buys off two of Cronenworth’s arbitration-eligible years. The 29-year-old will earn a base salary of $4.23 million this season after signing a deal with the Padres in January that allowed the two sides to avoid arbitration.

The Padres have been active in keeping their talent in-house on long-term deals after the 2022 MLB season wrapped up. Besides Cronenworth, the team also came to terms on extensions with superstar third baseman Manny Machado and starting pitchers Joe Musgrove and Yu Darvish. The franchise is reportedly also considering doing the same with closer Josh Hader, center fielder Trent Grisham, and shortstop Ha-Seong Kim.

Jake Cronenworth, a seventh-round pick in 2015, joined the Padres in 2019 in a trade that saw Hunter Renfroe and Xavier Edwards go to Tampa Bay Rays. Cronenworth made his MLB debut in 2020 and has since established himself as one of the team’s more valuable players thanks to his ability to play several positions.

Cronenworth played 158 games last season, batting .239 with 17 home runs and 88 RBIs. As a result of his performances, he earned his second consecutive All-Star nod.

Manny Machado and the San Diego Padres are in the process of finalizing an 11-year, $350 million contract extension, sources revealed on Sunday. This comes after the third baseman stated that he intended to opt out of the final five years of his current contract with the Padres along with $150 million after negotiations for an extension broke down.

While the star third baseman initially set a February 16 deadline for the Padres to reach an extension deal with him, Machado’s agent, Dan Lozano of MVP Sports, continued discussions with Padres general manager A.J. Preller, with the pair ultimately reaching an agreement.

Since arriving in San Diego in 2019, Machado has proven to be a key player as the Padres chase their first World Series in their 54-year history. Last season, Machado hit a career-best .298/.366/.531 with 32 home runs and 102 RBIs, finishing second in National League MVP voting. Even more importantly, he led the Padres to the National League Championship Series where they were defeated by the Philadelphia Phillies.

Currently, the Padres have the third-highest competitive balance tax payroll in Major League Baseball.

Xander Bogaerts has agreed to an 11-year, $280 million contract with the San Diego Padres, sources confirmed on Wednesday. This deal sees Bogaerts leave the Boston Red Sox, his only team to date, after a decade-long tenure.

Bogaerts won two World Series titles and was named to four All-Star teams before deciding to leave the Red Sox with three years remaining on his contract. His high point came in 2022 when he hit .307/.377/.456 with 15 home runs and 73 RBIs in 150 games.

San Diego has been highly active on the market recently, adding Juan Soto, Manny Machado, and Fernando Tatis Jr in addition to Bogaerts. Machado was signed to a 10-year, $300 million free-agent contract in 2019, while Tatis received a 14-year, $340 million extension two years later.

Established in 1969, the Padres are yet to win a World Series title. They last made the World Series in 1998 and are looking to repeat this feat by further bolstering their already star-studded lineup.

The San Diego Padres’ road to World Series once again has the NL division rivals Los Angeles Dodgers as an obstacle. The Padres and the Dodgers will meet in the 2022 National League Division Series after Padres eliminated the 101-win New York Mets in the NL Wild-Card series.

The Padres, who were without their star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. throughout the regular season, entered the Mets’ series as underdogs. Despite a quality roster and an experienced manager in Bob Melvin, San Diego was deemed too far away from the New York team that strolled for the better part of the season.

However, the San Diego Padres showed they are much better than their regular season performances indicated. After splitting the first two games of the NLWC with the Mets, the Padres absolutely dominated Game 3.

Starter Joe Musgrove delivered a strong outing, allowing just one hit and striking out five Mets batters in seven innings of action. Stars Juan Soto and Manny Machado did their parts at-bats, recording two hits each, but the Padres also saw a strong contribution from the rest of their lineup. Shortstop Ha-Seong Kim finished the game with three walks and three scores, while catcher Aaron Nola delivered two hits and two RBIs.

While the Mets are returning to the drawing board, the Padres are preparing to face their old nemesis, the Dodgers. Game 1 of the NLDS series is set to kick off on Tuesday night.

The Washington Nationals decided it is best to trade their star slugger Juan Soto sooner than later. The Nationals pulled the trigger on Tuesday, shipping Soto to the San Diego Padres for a massive haul of prospects.

According to the official announcement, Washington sent Soto and first baseman Josh Bell to the Padres while receiving the following top prospects: shortstop C.J. Abrams, lefty MacKenzie Gore, righty Jarlin Susana, and outfielders Robert Hassell III and James Wood. The deal also saw the Nationals getting 2020’s MLB homer run leader Luke Voit.

The Padres previously attempted to include first baseman Eric Hosmer in the deal as well, but the veteran refused to waive his no-trade clause for Washington. Instead, he is heading to the Boston Red Sox as part of a separate trade.

Acquiring Juan Soto significantly moves the needle for the Padres, who were immediately pushed into the World Series contenders tier with this deal. It is believed that pairing Soto with stars Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado will make Padres a formidable force in National League and finally give San Diego enough firepower to jump over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

On the other hand, the Washington Nationals surely feel gutted for giving away their best player. However, with Soto recently rejecting a contract extension, the Nationals couldn’t afford to wait. The 23-year-old player’s value could only get lower as he approached the end of his deal, so it was crucial for the franchise to act as quickly as it did.

It isn’t all bad for the franchise, as the prospect arriving in Washington will replenish the team’s weak farm system. The Nationals can now be a bit more optimistic about their rebuild, although the sting from letting Soto leave will probably last a long time or at least until one of the arrivals proves to be a superstar in the making.

After the New York Mets released him last week, Robinson Cano didn’t stay a free agent for long. The veteran second baseman is on an MLB roster again after just five days, having agreed to a deal with the San Diego Padres.

The financial terms of the deal remain unknown, but it is believed that Cano accepted a minimum contract. The money wasn’t the key element in the negotiations for the 39-year-old player as he’s set to receive close to $45 million from the Mets.

Cano has had a disastrous start to the 2022 MLB season, batting .195 with one home run and 3 RBIs. His performances were so bad that the Mets were willing to eat up the remaining two years of his 10-year, $240 million contract rather than keep him on the roster. But the Padres believe the change of scenery might help the eight-time All-Star find his prowess at the bat again.

According to reports, the Padres intend to use Cano as a designated hitter almost exclusively. The team has been struggling to find production at the position as San Diego’s designated hitters batted .206 with just two homers so far in 2022.

Robinson Cano is best known for his time with the New York Yankees, where he spent the first nine years of his time in the majors. Cano earned four All-Star nods during that time, won World Series with the Yankees in 2009, and earned all of his five Silver Slugger Awards. He signed as a free agent with the Seattle Mariners in 2013, playing there for five seasons before being traded to the Mets.

According to multiple reports that surfaced in the past couple of days, the San Diego Padres are preparing to say goodbye to their manager Jayce Tingler after an underwhelming 2021 MLB season. But despite this, it appears that Tingler still hopes he will get a chance to make amends next year.

“I believe in this group,” Tingler told reporters via ESPN. “Of course I want to be a part of going forward. I think we’re closer to getting up top of the division than we are going the other way. I think we’ve got a lot of talent, I think we’ve got a lot of winning players. That would be an absolute ‘yes.'”

The Padres entered the 2021 season as one of the favorites to make a deep playoff run. The team played the part early on but dropped in form further into the season. This resulted in a meltdown in September that saw them going from leading the race for the NL wild-card spot to losing their postseason chances with seven games left to play.

Tingler was named the San Diego Padres’ manager in 2020 and was tasked with returning the team to playoffs after a 13-year drought. In his first season at the helm, the Padres finished second in NL West and made their way to NL Divisional Series where they were swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Before being hired by the Padres, Tingler worked as a coach for the Texas Rangers while also serving as manager in the Dominican Republic.

We’re barely ten games into the MLB season, and we already can’t wait to get to the playoffs. After so much anticipation and an exciting Spring Training, we finally got our first look at our new and improved teams, and now it’s time to reassess things a tad. Here’s our definitive top-five ranking of the MLB teams.

5. Cincinnati Reds

Give the Reds credit for coming out of the gate strong and winning five out of six home games. Currently sitting atop the NL Central Division with a 6-3 record, they’ve earned their spot on this list. But it’ll take work for them to maintain it.

4. Minnesota Twins

Although they’ve been shaky, the fact of the matter is that the Twins have an excellent team this year. One highlight so far for them this season has been the 40-year-old Nelson Cruz, who’s hit four homers and gotten a hit in every game so far.

3. New York Yankees

The Yankees have also had a slow start, but the sheer talent on their roster is more than enough for them to crack the top three of this list. If Aaron Judge and company are the players we think they are, they’ll rise to the top of the American League soon enough.

2. San Diego Padres

We were already excited about the Padres before the season started. Then Joe Musgrove threw the first no-hitter in franchise history, and we couldn’t help but feel giddy about their potential this season.

1. Los Angeles Dodgers

Far and away the most talented roster in the league, the Dodgers seem well-equipped to defend their title this season. They’re off to an incredible start as well, leading the league with an 8-2 record.
