The Seattle Kraken couldn’t have dreamed about a better playoff debut. The Kraken played its first postseason game in franchise history on Thursday against the reigning Stanley Cup champions Colorado Avalanche and managed to get away with a massive 3-1 win.

Kraken was led to the victory by center Alex Wennberg, who finished the night with a goal and an assist, while goalie Philipp Grubauer made 34 saves to stop Avalanche’s high-octane offense from getting on the scoreboard more than once.

Speaking with reporters after the game, Wennberg said while the team enjoyed their first playoff win, they will not get carried away.

“Obviously, we played a good game, getting the first franchise win in the playoffs. But right now, this is Game 1,” Wennberg said. “Obviously, we are happy about this performance, but we’ve got to do it again and do it again.”

Kraken finished the 2022-23 regular season, their second in NHL, with a 46-28-8 record, and entered the postseason as a seventh seed. Many believed that being matched with the Avalanche in the first round would lead to Kraken having an unceremonious exit from the postseason, but it doesn’t look so now. Even if the lack of playoff experience gets the better of them later in the series, they have shown that they deserved their place in the Stanley Cup playoffs, and the league, for that matter.

Seattle’s NHL expansion team finally revealed its identity on Thursday. The franchise announced on Thursday that they will go by the name of Seattle Kraken, while also presenting its logo and color scheme.

Kraken settled on icy blue, navy blue and red colors, being influenced by Seattle’s maritime history and connection to water. The logo, shaped like letter „S,“ represents a nod to the city’s original hockey team Metropolitans while also incorporating the features of the mythical sea creature that inspired the franchise’s name.

Seattle Kraken are set to play their inaugural season in 2021/22 as a member of the Pacific Division in the Western Conference. The Expansion Draft for the team is set to take place in June 2021.

“Seattle’s a city with a deep maritime history,” said Kraken’s general manager Ron Francis in a statement. “I think this name embodies a connection with the sea and a curiosity of what lies beneath it.“

“This city deserves a hockey club as untamed as the sea herself, and when we heard the rallying cry of the fans, and we heard the undeniable passion they had for this name, we knew it was the one,” added vice president of marketing Heidi Dettmer. “We are the Seattle Kraken.”

Seattle was granted an NHL expansion in 2018 for an estimated fee of $650 million. It will be the city’s first professional ice hockey team since Seattle Totems, who last played during 1975 in Western Hockey League.
