Barcelona striker Sergio Aguero is hanging up his cleats for good. During a press conference organized on Wednesday, the 33-year-old announced he is officially retiring from soccer due to his recent health issues.

Aguero, who joined Barca as a free agent in the summer, was diagnosed with a heart arrhythmia in late October after feeling chest pain during a game against Alaves. The Argentinian was initially sidelined for three months, during which he was set to undergo therapy and have his condition monitored. Back then, he said that he wouldn’t decide on his future until these three months had passed.

However, with no positive developments in sight, Aguero opted not to wait any longer.

“This conference is to announce I have decided to stop playing professional football,” Aguero said. “It is a very difficult moment. The decision I have taken for my health; the problem I had a month and a half ago.”

“I am very proud for my career. I always dreamed of a professional career since the first time I touched a ball at 5,” he added.

Sergio Aguero is considered one of the best strikers of his generation. He started his professional career in native Argentina with Independiente before making a move to Spain and joining Atletico Madrid. Aguero went on to play 234 games for Atletico and score 101 goals while helping the club win UEFA Europa League in 2009-10.

Aguero left Madrid in 2011 to join European powerhouse Manchester City. He left a huge impact there, scoring 260 goals in 10 years while winning 15 trophies, including five Premier League titles. After Aguero departed the club in the summer, City announced that they would pay tribute to the striker by erecting a statue of him in front of their stadium. The statue is expected to be unveiled in 2022.

Argentinian striker Sergio Aguero will play for La Liga giants Barcelona next season, the Catalan club confirmed on Monday.

Aguero inked a two-year deal with Barca and will arrive as a free-agent signing. The club also announced that his contract includes a $122 million buyout clause while his salary will reportedly be around $6 million annually.

The 32-year-old legend is well familiar with Spanish football, having played in La Liga with Atletico Madrid between 2006 and 2011.

Aguero spent the previous ten seasons with Manchester City, where he scored 260 goals in 390 games. Besides becoming the club’s all-time leading goalscorer, he also helped City win 15 trophies, including five English Premier League trophies.

The 2020-21 season, however, was challenging for Aguero as he was often kept off the field by various injuries. He only managed to play 20 games while finding the net six times.

Barcelona hopes that recovered Sergio Aguero could play a significant role in their return to the top of La Liga. The club finished third in the national competition last season, marking the first time since 2008 that they were not placed in the top two. This was followed by failures in the Champions League, where they were eliminated in the round of 16.

The arrival of Aguero will reportedly be followed by more additions in the attacking department, with Barca looking to sign Lyon’s Memphis Depay and/or another young striker. The club is also looking to make other changes to their roster, with names like Georginio Wijnaldum and Gianluigi Donnarumma being mentioned as their targets.

Manchester City will have to wait a bit longer to get goals from their star striker Sergio Aguero. According to the club’s manager Pep Guardiola, Aguero miss up to two more months recovering from a knee injury.

Aguero injured his knee back in June and had to undergo a surgery in order to repair the damage. There was optimism at the time that he could return for the start of the new season, but it appears that the 32-year-old player still has ways to go before returning to the field.

“We knew that the injury was difficult. He is doing the job, in maybe one month or two months he will be ready,” Guardiola told reporters during a press conference for a season opener against Wolverhampton Wanderers. “He has to come back on the pitch and regain the physical condition. Sergio was out for a long time, and Sergio is not a guy who regains the physical condition quick.”

Sergio Aguero’s absence could prove problematic for Manchester City, considering that the Argentinian is the club’s main threat in front of the goal. Also, City doesn’t have a lot of depth on the position, with Brazilian Gabriel Jesus being their only other available striker.

Since joining Man City in the summer of 2011, Aguero has been on a tear and delivered five seasons in which he had 30 or more goals. In total, he scored impressive 254 goals in 370 games in all competitions with the club.

Manchester City got a big 5-0 win over Burnley on Monday night, but it wasn’t all good news for the defending Premier League champions. Man City’s star striker Sergio Aguero suffered a knee injury in the first half of the game, and could possibly be done for the season.

Aguero injured his knee after being taken down in the penalty area by one of Burnley’s defenders just before the halftime. He managed to get up, but was visibly limping and immediately asked to be subbed.

Following the examination, the club released an official statement in which they confirmed Aguero has damage in his left knee and will have to undergo further tests with a specialist in Barcelona.

The player himself later confirmed the news via social media.

While there is no official timetable for Sergio Aguero’s return, Manchester City’s manager Pep Guardiola indicated that the 32-year-old might have played his last game this season.

“It doesn’t look good,” said Guardiola after the Burnley game. “We will see. He has struggled the last month with a problem in the knee, and now he felt something but we will see exactly what he has. It doesn’t look good.”

While City doesn’t have a chance to defend its Premier League title this season, they will miss Aguero in their UEFA Champions League campaign for sure. The Argentinian has been club’s best goal scorer this season as well, contributing with 23 goals in 32 games.
