Paris Saint-Germain defender Sergio Ramos has announced his retirement from international duty with the Spanish men’s national team. This comes after the 36-year-old player was notified that he would not be part of the plans of new Spain coach Luis de la Fuente.

Ramos revealed that he received a phone call from de la Fuente confirming his omission from the Spanish national squad. “I received a call from the current head coach who informed I am not and will not be part of his plans, regardless of how I perform or whatever I do in my career,” Ramos confirmed on social media.

“With a heavy heart, it is the end of a road which I hoped would end with a better taste or on a part with we achieve with La Roja.”

Making his international debut in 2005, Ramos went on to form a critical part of Spain’s “golden generation”, helping La Roja to win Euro 2008 and Euro 2012 along with the 2010 FIFA World Cup; the first in Spain’s history.

His final appearance for Spain came on March 31, 2021, during a 3-1 win over Kosovo.

Spain midfielder Gavi has become the youngest player to score at the World Cup since Brazil legend Pele in 1958. The Barcelona prodigy scored during Spain’s 7-0 thumping of Costa Rica in their opening Group E game.

At 18 years and 110 days old, this makes Gavi the third-youngest goalscorer in World Cup history. In addition, Gavi also became the youngest-ever player to represent Spain at an international tournament.

“I never dreamed to be here at this age,” Gavi stated following Spain’s victory. “I’m so happy to be here. This is only one step. I need to keep going.”

Pele continues to hold the all-time youngest goalscorer record, having scored at the 1958 World Cup final as Brazil defeated Sweden. He was just 17 years, 249 days old at the time.

Following Pele is Mexico’s Manuel Rosas, who scored at the age of 18 years and 93 days during the first-ever World Cup tournament in 1930.

In addition to making history, Gavi also received FIFA’s player of the match award in recognition of his contribution to Spain’s emphatic win.

The final round of the UEFA Nations League group stage took place on Wednesday, which saw Italy and Belgium win their respective groups and consequently progress to the UEFA Nations League finals, set to take place in 2021. There, they will join Spain and France, who already secured their spots in the finals due to winning their groups on Matchday 5.

Italy won group A1 by defeating Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0, thus fending off close competition from the Netherlands, who finished the group stages just one point behind the Azzurri. As for Belgium, their 4-2 thumping of Denmark saw them put five points between themselves and the second-placed Danes, while England finished in third place due to an inferior goal difference.

At the foot of A1 remains Bosnia and Herzegovina, who will be relegated to League B of the competition after only managing to rack up two points throughout the group stage. While group A2 saw a hotly-contested race being fought by Belgium, Denmark, and England, Iceland could not put up a fight against the giants, ultimately ending the competition on zero points. They will also be playing League B football during their next campaign.

The sides promoted to league A next season include group B1 winners Austria, B2 winners Czech Republic, B3 winners Hungary, and B4 winners Wales, who will be looking to emulate their squad that made it to the semi finals of Euro 2016.

The Spanish national soccer team enjoyed a historic win over powerhouse opponents Germany in their UEFA Nations League group clash on Tuesday, steamrolling them with a resounding 6-0 scoreline.

Not only is this the worst defeat ever suffered by the German national team in its history, but the last time that Germany lost by a six goal margin was in 1931, during a friendly match against Austria.

While this match saw goalkeeper Manuel Neuer become Germany’s most-capped goalkeeper with 96 international appearances, this achievement was soon overshadowed by another humiliating statistic, namely, that this was the first occasion on which the keeper conceded six goals in a single match, for either club or country.

From the first whistle, the Spanish dominated the game’s proceedings, scoring three goals in the first half. By the time the final whistle blew, La Roja had maintained a colossal 70% ball possession and taken 23 shots, compared to three shots by the German team. The standout player of the evening was 20-year-old Ferran Torres, who scored a hattrick in what was only his seventh international game. Alvaro Morata, Rodri Hernandez, and Mikel Oyarzabal rounded out the scoring.

This win secured Spain’s progression to the final tournament, where the squad will come face-to-face with join France and either Belgium or Denmark from group A2 along with either Italy, the Netherlands or Poland from Group A1.

While the champion of the league has already been decided heading into the final La Liga matchday, there was still a big mystery at the bottom of the table. Who was heading down to Spain’s second division?

Celta and Leganés both suffered a tense 90 minutes on Sunday night, but Celta ended up barely finding safety and Leganés was relegated in heartbreaking fashion.

Celta, a team that had spent millions of dollars last summer and brought in players such as Denis Suárez, Rafinha, and Santi Mina, never thought that it would have been in a relegation fight.

However, their draw on the road against bottom of the table Espanyol, combined with a Leganés draw against La Liga champions Real Madrid, meant that they were able to at least escape from a fate that had once seemed unimaginable.

Leganés, on the other hand, spent nearly the entire season in the relegation zone of the table and suffered a couple of big losses in the winter after strikers Youssef En-Nesyri and Martin Braithwaite left for Sevilla and Barcelona, respectively.

However, the team from the Madrid suburbs nearly completed a miraculous comeback to stay in the league for the fifth consecutive season.

After being down 1-2 in the second half to Real Madrid, they tied up the score thanks to a Roger Assale goal in the 78th minute.

They desperately attacked Real Madrid for the final 10 minutes of the game plus added time, but simply couldn’t find the net and their draw sealed their relegation down to the second division.

At the end of the day, Celta’s players had escaped relegation and Leganés’s will have to begin planning for a promotion push next season if they want to return to La Liga.
