After knocking off Real Madrid in the semi-final of the Spanish Super Cup last week, Athletic Bilbao completed their one-two knockout of Spain’s two biggest clubs with a 3-2 win in extra time over FC Barcelona to claim their first Super Cup win since 2015.

The Lions would not quit on Sunday night at La Cartuja Stadium in Seville, going behind twice after two goals by Antoine Griezmann but answering back each time to send the game into extra time, where an Inaki Williams goal delivered their win.

Oscar de Marcos headed in a goal after a Griezmann strike just before halftime to send the game to the break all tied up.

Griezmann knocked in his second goal of the night with only 15 minutes left to go in regulation, but Barca’s poor defending of a set-piece led to Athletic striker Asier Villalibre getting free and knocking a late equalizer past Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Athletic continued its momentum just after extra time began when Williams’ magical goal flew past ter Stegen, who had no prayer of stopping it.

Barcelona continued to press for an equalizer throughout extra time but saw their hopes gradually fade away against a pesky Athletic side until the final whistle blew.

Things went from bad to worse for Blaugrana in extra time after Leo Messi was shown a straight red card for striking Villalibre, an infraction that sees him facing a suspension of anywhere from 4 to 12 games.

Athletic’s Super Cup trophy is the third in their club’s history and a magical start to the tenure of their new coach Marcelino, who took over earlier this month.

While the champion of the league has already been decided heading into the final La Liga matchday, there was still a big mystery at the bottom of the table. Who was heading down to Spain’s second division?

Celta and Leganés both suffered a tense 90 minutes on Sunday night, but Celta ended up barely finding safety and Leganés was relegated in heartbreaking fashion.

Celta, a team that had spent millions of dollars last summer and brought in players such as Denis Suárez, Rafinha, and Santi Mina, never thought that it would have been in a relegation fight.

However, their draw on the road against bottom of the table Espanyol, combined with a Leganés draw against La Liga champions Real Madrid, meant that they were able to at least escape from a fate that had once seemed unimaginable.

Leganés, on the other hand, spent nearly the entire season in the relegation zone of the table and suffered a couple of big losses in the winter after strikers Youssef En-Nesyri and Martin Braithwaite left for Sevilla and Barcelona, respectively.

However, the team from the Madrid suburbs nearly completed a miraculous comeback to stay in the league for the fifth consecutive season.

After being down 1-2 in the second half to Real Madrid, they tied up the score thanks to a Roger Assale goal in the 78th minute.

They desperately attacked Real Madrid for the final 10 minutes of the game plus added time, but simply couldn’t find the net and their draw sealed their relegation down to the second division.

At the end of the day, Celta’s players had escaped relegation and Leganés’s will have to begin planning for a promotion push next season if they want to return to La Liga.

After the final whistle at the Benito Villamarín Stadium in Sevilla blew, Valencia’s players collapsed on the ground. It was partially due to exhaustion on a hot night in southern Spain, and partially because they could hardly believe what they had just done.

Valencia shocked Barcelona by a 2-1 final to claim the Copa del Rey, the club’s first major title in 11 years.

The Chés jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and held on to take home the victory in the cup final despite a second-half Leo Messi goal.

Valencia, which finished 4th in La Liga this season, got on the board first with a stunning Kevin Gameiro strike in the 21st minute that Barça keeper Jasper Cillessen couldn’t get to.

They took a 2-0 advantage when Rodrigo Moreno headed in a cross from Carlos Soler only 12 minutes later.

Barça tried desperately to generate chances in the second half of the game, but Valencia’s back line held solid. The only goal that Barcelona managed to score was after a bar bounced off of the post and to Leo Messi after a corner.

Valencia’s win ends Barcelona’s four-year reign as the champions of Spain’s domestic tournament. It’s their first Copa del Rey trophy since the 2009 edition.

There might be three matchdays left to go before the end of the season, but Barça didn’t want to wait too long to claim the La Liga title this season.

They took a 1-0 home victory against Levante yesterday to wrap up their eighth Spanish title in the past eleven seasons.

This unprecedented run of success, which dates back to the beginning of Pep Guardiola’s run as Barcelona’s head coach, is unprecedented in the history of the Spanish first division.

Barcelona, knowing that they had the first leg of their Champions League semifinal matchup against Liverpool looming on Wednesday, started with a conservative lineup against 15th-place Levante at the Camp Nou. Leo Messi started the game on the bench, as did other stars such as Sergio Busquets.

After going to the dressing rooms tied 0-0 at halftime, Barça coach Ernesto Valverde decided to substitute on Lionel Messi, which changed everything.

Barcelona’s world-class forward and the favorite for this edition of the Ballon d’Or scored a goal past Levante keeper Oier Oyarzabal in only his 17th minute in the pitch after putting two Levante defenders in a pretzel.

That was enough for Barcelona, which kept Levante off of the board for the final stretch of the game and wrapped up a 1-0 victory to claim their title.

Barcelona will be back in action on Wednesday at the Camp Nou in a massive game against Liverpool.
