St. Louis Cardinals slugger Paul Goldsmitdt has been named the National League MVP, receiving 22 of 30 first-place votes and eight seconds from a Baseball Writers’ Association of America panel. This is the 35-year-old player’s first MVP honor of his career.

Goldschmidt beat out fellow teammate Nolan Arenado and San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado for the award, grabbing a total of 380 points. Machado came in second place with seven first-place votes and 291 points, while Arenado was third, grabbing one first-place vote and 232 points.

“I think definitely as you age, you have to adapt, and that’s some of what I’ve tried to do. I’ve tried to get ahead of it,” Goldschmidt said after receiving the accolade. “You can’t just try to do the same thing you did the year before. But yeah, kind of the stigma that as you get older, you’re going to keep getting worse. I mean, nobody likes that. They don’t like being told you can’t do something, so it’s definitely motivation.”

The veteran slugger hit .317 with 35 home runs and 115 RBIs this season while also leading the National League in slugging and OPS with .578 and .981 respectively.

The Hall of Fame-worthy career of Albert Pujols is coming full circle. According to multiple reports, Pujols is returning to St. Louis, the place where he started his MLB career, after agreeing to a one-year deal with the Cardinals.

The deal is worth $2.5 million and will see Pujols joining his former franchise in a two-way role. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports the 42-year-old player will serve as a late-game pinch-hitter and designated hitter against left-handers.

Pujols is coming to St. Louis after splitting the 2021 MLB seasons with the Los Angeles Angels and the LA Dodgers. He had a surprisingly productive spell with the Dodgers, playing in 85 games and having a batting average of .254 with 12 home runs and 38 RBI. The Dominican veteran also played well in the postseason but could not help the Dodgers defend their World Series title.

The St. Louis Cardinals drafted Albert Pujols in the 13th round of the 1999 MLB Draft. He made his majors debut in 2001, marking the start of one of the most dominant stretches by a player in baseball history.

During his 11 seasons with the Cardinals, Pujols made nine All-Star appearances, won three NL MVP awards, led the league in homers twice, and won numerous other accolades. He also helped St. Louis make three World Series and win two of them.

Pujols, who spent the second decade of his MLB career with the Angels, has hit .297 for his career.

He has a total of 3,301 hits in the majors to go with 679 homers and 2,150 RBIs.

The Los Angeles Angels have been quite busy on the trade market recently. After trading with the Baltimore Orioles for pitcher Alex Cobb earlier this week, the Angels went on and acquired veteran outfielder Dexter Fowler from the St. Louis Cardinals as well.

The team confirmed the move on Friday, revealing that Fowler cost them cash consideration or a player to be named after.

“He’s an outstanding human being, and he’s a high-energy player,” said Angels general manager Perry Minasian in a statement. “Over a 162-game season, energy is important, and this guy brings that smile, that energy on a daily basis. And we still think he can play. We think there’s a lot left in the tank.”

Fowler struggled with production in recent years, managing just a .233 batting average, four home runs, and 15 RBIs in 2020. Still, he can help the Angels in other ways thanks to his versatility and veteran leadership. The 34-year-old player will most likely be among the team’s top choices in right-field but could see action on all three outfield positions as the season progresses.

Dexter Fowler spent his early MLB career with the Colorado Rockies, suiting up for the organization between 2008 and 2013. After spending 2014 with the Houston Astros, Fowler signed with the Chicago Cubs and went on to play some of his best baseball. This included an All-Star nod in 2016 and a World Series title in the same year.

Fowler’s career stats in the majors include a .259 batting average, 127 home runs, 516 RBIs, and 148 stolen bases.

The 2019’s Gold Glove award winner Kolten Wong is heading to free agency after St. Louis Cardinals rejected his option for 2021.

If Cardinals opted to keep Wong, he would be set to earn $12.5 million next season. Instead, the 30-year-old player will get $1 million in buyout and will have the opportunity to hit the open market.

Wong finished the 2020 MLB season with 53 game appearances in which he batted .265 with one home run and 16 RBIs.

Cardinals’ decision to decline Wong’s option isn’t a guarantee that Wong ended his stint in St. Louis, however.

“I told him that with some of the uncertainties, we’re just not in a position to do that,” said the team’s president of baseball operations John Mozeliak. “We both agreed to keep the door open, and so as we progress in this, it’s something that we’re not ruling out for a future return.”

Kolten Wong spent his entire career with the Cardinals, debuting in the majors in 2013. Since then, Wong played 852 games in MLB, hitting .261 with 53 career homers and 281 RBIs.

Wong won Gold Glove last season and is a finalist for the same award in 2020. He also has two Fielding Bible Awards as the best defensive player at his position.

St. Louis Cardinals will officially be without right-hand pitcher Miles Mikolas this season. The team confirmed on Tuesday that Mikolas will require surgery on his forearm, which will put him out for 2020. The team, however, expects him to fully recover in time to start the next MLB season.

Mikolas was originally diagnosed with forearm soreness in February and underwent platelet-rich plasma injection treatment. It appeared that the 31-year-old player managed to recover in the meantime as he started the training camp as a full participant. Still, after pitching in an exhibition game last week, he started feeling discomfort again and was advised to have surgery.

“I know Miles is disappointed, but he also knows he couldn’t continue like he was going,” said Cardinals’ president of baseball operations John Mozeliak.

Cardinals decided to temporarily fill the void in their rotation by recalling right-hander Jake Woodford, who was part of the team’s “taxi squad” on previous occasions. They are expected to look into several other solutions from within, but Mozeliak didn’t rule out the possibility of signing players from the outside.

Miles Mikolas signed with St. Louis Cardinals in 2018 after spending the previous three seasons in Japan. Mikolas’ first year back in MLB was a big success, as he earned an All-Star appearance and led NL in wins with 18-4 record. He had 2.83 ERA with 146 strikeouts.

In 2019, Mikolas had a 9-14 record, posting 4.16 ERA and 144 strikeouts.

The St. Louis Cardinals might not have planned to reveal who would take the mound for them on Opening Day later this month on Tuesday, but star right-handed pitcher Jack Flaherty went on and did it himself in a Zoom call with reporters.

Flaherty, who has burst onto the scene over the past two seasons as one of the top young pitchers in baseball, said that Cardinals manager Mike Shildt has decided on him as the man who will take the mound against the Pirates at home on July 24th.

As Flaherty put it, Shildt “should probably be the one to tell you guys, but oh well.”

The California native finished 4th in NL Cy Young Award voting last season after compiling an 11-8 record along with a 2.75 ERA for the NL Central champions. In 196.1 innings pitched, the hard-throwing righty vexed hitters to the tune of 231 strikeouts.

Flaherty figures to be the ace in the rotation for a Cardinals team that surprised many by making the playoffs next season and will look to build on his success over the past two seasons. At only 24-years-old player, the righty still has plenty of time to improve and establish himself as one of the best starters in the big leagues.
