St. Louis Cardinals slugger Paul Goldsmitdt has been named the National League MVP, receiving 22 of 30 first-place votes and eight seconds from a Baseball Writers’ Association of America panel. This is the 35-year-old player’s first MVP honor of his career.

Goldschmidt beat out fellow teammate Nolan Arenado and San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado for the award, grabbing a total of 380 points. Machado came in second place with seven first-place votes and 291 points, while Arenado was third, grabbing one first-place vote and 232 points.

“I think definitely as you age, you have to adapt, and that’s some of what I’ve tried to do. I’ve tried to get ahead of it,” Goldschmidt said after receiving the accolade. “You can’t just try to do the same thing you did the year before. But yeah, kind of the stigma that as you get older, you’re going to keep getting worse. I mean, nobody likes that. They don’t like being told you can’t do something, so it’s definitely motivation.”

The veteran slugger hit .317 with 35 home runs and 115 RBIs this season while also leading the National League in slugging and OPS with .578 and .981 respectively.

Not even a 17-game winning streak or an improbable postseason berth were enough for Mike Shildt to keep his job as the manager of the St. Louis Cardinals. The franchise made a decision to fire Shildt on Thursday, making the move a week after the Cardinals’ NL Wild Card game loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Shildt’s exit was rather unceremonious, with the franchise announcing the news with a short message on Twitter.

Detailing the decision in a chat with the media, the Cardinals’ president of baseball operations John Mozeliak said that the organization and Shildt had some “philosophical differences” that ultimately caused the two sides to part ways.

“All I can say is where we felt the team was going, we were struggling to get on the same page,” Mozeliak said via ESPN. “With him having one year remaining on his contract, we could have gone into 2022 having that over him, and we just decided that internally it would be best to separate now and take a fresh look as we head into a new season.”

Mike Shildt started his time with St. Louis Cardinals as a scout in the early 2000s and worked his way to becoming a coach in the minors. He was promoted to MLB in 2017 when he became the Cardinals quality control coach. Shildt then served as a third base coach and the team’s bench coach before being named the interim managed after Mike Matheny was fired midway through the 2018 season.

Shildt soon earned the full position and ended the campaign with a 41-28 record. He followed that by leading the Cardinals to three consecutive postseason trips that included the NL Central title and the NL Championship Series appearance in 2019.

The St. Louis Cardinals will likely face the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL wild-card game. But that didn’t stop them from naming righty Adam Wainwright as the starter for the showdown.

The news was revealed by the Cardinals’ manager Mike Shildt during a chat with reporters on Thursday.

“He gets better as the game goes, he goes deep in games, he’s a big-game pitcher,” Shildt said of Wainwright.

The decision to start Wainwright doesn’t come as a surprise, as he is currently enjoying his most productive season in years. He has a 17-7 record in 32 starts while posting 3.05 ERA and 174 strikeouts.

Adam Wainwright will have the honor to be the oldest pitcher to start an MLB wild-card game at the age of 40. The previous oldest pitcher to start in wild-card was Charlie Morton, who did it in 2019 with the Tampa Bay Rays as a 35-year-old.

So far in his MLB career, Wainwright made 28 starts in the postseason and has 4-5 record to show for.

The Cardinals are set to go against the second-played team in NL West, which could be either the Los Angeles Dodgers or the San Francisco Giants. The Dodgers are currently at number two with two games behind the Giants, and four left to play.

Yadier Molina will remain a one-club man. The All-Star catcher agreed to an extension with the St. Louis Cardinals that will see him playing one more season with the franchise in 2022 before retiring from MLB.

The Cardinals confirmed the agreement, reportedly worth $10 million, on Tuesday.

Back in 2020, Molina entered the free agency for the first time in his storied career after failing to agree on a new contract with the Cardinals. The two-time World Series champion said at the time that he has a goal of playing for two more years and would be prepared to go somewhere else to achieve it.

Eventually, the Cardinals and Molina managed to strike a one-year, $9 million deal to remain together. The agreement ended up working well for the franchise, considering that the 39-year-old is playing a solid season that saw him batting .259 with eight home runs and 51 RBIs in 94 games in 2021.

Yadier Molina played a total of 2,119 MLB games with the Cardinals in the past 18 years, ranking at No.3 on the franchise’s all-time list. Aside from helping bring two World Series trophies in St. Louis, he earned 10 All-Star nods and received nine Golden Glove Awards. Molina’s career stats include a .280 batting average, 168 homers, and 983 RBIs.

“We are pleased to announce that Yadi has agreed to cement his career legacy with the Cardinals for a final season in 2022,” said Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak. “His experience, leadership, work ethic, and winning desire are all part of what we value as an organization.”

The St. Louis Cardinals became the 2nd hurdle that Major League Baseball had to overcome this season after 13 players and staff tested positive for Covid-19. The first team was the Miami Marlins who didn’t play for over a week, before resuming play Tuesday night in a 4-0 win against the Orioles.

After five days of quarantining in their Milwaukee hotel rooms, the team finally received 2 negative tests in a row- MLB’s protocol to resume play. The players and staff who tested positive were sent home to quarantine, and they include catcher Yadier Molina and shortstop Paul DeJong, 2 key players on offense and defense.

The Cardinals flew to Milwaukee for a weekend series but didn’t play there at all as more and more players tested positive. The series against Detroit was canceled as well and instead, the team will head back to St. Louis on Wednesday for 2 days of workouts before starting a series against the Chicago Cubs on Friday at Busch Stadium.

The challenge now will be completing the 60 game schedule, as they will now have to play 55 games in a 52 game span. This will likely include quite a few 7 inning doubleheaders that MLB approved recently, along with fewer off days.

St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Jordan Hicks announced via his social media accounts that he will not take part in the 2020 MLB season due to concerns related to a pre-existing health condition.

Hicks, whose powerful right arm throws the fastest average fastball in the whole league, is a Type 1 Diabetic and thus pertains to a group which has been reported to be at a higher risk for severe complications due to COVID-19. A joint decision was reached between Hicks and his team to keep him at home in 2020, allowing him to focus on his health and come back strong for next season.

Another factor which may have played a part in Hicks’ and the Cardinals’ decision is that the righty is currently recovering from Tommy John surgery. While he was scheduled to rejoin the team’s bullpen at some point during the 2020 season, he would not have been available for all of the team’s games either way.

The 23-year-old flamethrower is the owner of a career 3.47 ERA in 106.1 innings on the mound. He became pencilled in as St. Louis’ closer after an impressive start to the 2019 season before he tore his ulnar collateral ligament, knocking him out for the rest of the season and part of 2020.

Hopefully the Cardinal closer will be healthy and ready to go for the 2021 season, with the coronavirus pandemic and arm surgery behind him.

Few could have ever imagined this just a couple of months ago, but on Tuesday, the once-improbable became reality.

The Washington Nationals, who upset the reigning National League champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS, finished up a four-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals to advance to the World Series for the first time in franchise history.

Washington, who finished in 2nd place in the NL East behind the Atlanta Braves, has been on a magical run that has taken them as one of the playoffs’ biggest long shots to play for a title to the Fall Classic.

The Cardinals, who the Nats defeated by a 7-4 final score on Tuesday night in the nation’s capital, proved to be a little challenge for the hottest team in baseball.

The Nationals scored seven runs in the first inning of Game 4 in an onslaught against Cardinals starter Dakota Hudson, putting the game essentially out of reach just after it began.

Patrick Corbin struck out 12 Cardinals in 5 innings on the mound despite giving up 4 runs, earning the win in a game that Nats fans won’t soon forget.

Now, the team will wait and see whether they will travel to the Bronx to face the Yankees or to Houston to face the Astros in Game 1 of the World Series.

The Atlanta Braves battled back with a dramatic ninth-inning comeback to defeat the St. Louis Cardinals on the road on Sunday in Game 3 of the NLDS, and put themselves in the driver’s seat to advance with a 2-1 series lead.

Atlanta trailed 1-0 for the majority of the game after Marcell Ozuna doubled and then came around to scored on a sacrifice fly in the second inning. Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright and Braves starter Mike Soroka spent the first seven innings trading impeccable innings on the mound, with Ozuna’s run being the only event to separate the two teams.

Wainwright, the 38-year-old veteran starter, was dominant, holding Atlanta’s potent offense scoreless and striking out eight batters in 7.2 innings of brilliant work.

Despite allowing a second-inning run, Braves rookie starter Mike Soroka was almost as good, striking out 7 and allowing only 2 hits in seven innings.

Things changed in the top of the ninth inning when Cardinals closer Carlos Martinez entered the game. After allowing a double to Josh Donaldson and walking Brian McCann to face shortstop Dansby Swanson, the young infielder made St. Louis pay with a game-tying double.

Pinch-hitter Adam Duvall then entered, rapping a single to centerfield to bust the tie and put Atlanta up 3-1. Closer Mark Melancon worked a clean ninth inning to save the game for the Braves, who managed to steal victory from the jaws of defeat.

Atlanta will now look to win in Game 4 in St. Louis and clinch their first berth in the NLCS since the 2001 season.

This season’s Division Series slate got off to a bang on Thursday evening in Atlanta, as the Cardinals and Braves battled in a wild NLDS Game 1 that St. Louis was able to hang on to win by a 7-6 final score.

The Cardinals rallied late to take a 7-3 lead in the ninth inning after being 3-1 down in the eighth inning before overcoming a pair of home runs from Ronald Acuña Jr. and Freddie Freeman in the bottom half of the frame to hold on to win.

The game had the look of a pitchers’ duel to start off, as starting pitchers Miles Mikolas of the Cardinals and Dallas Keuchel of the Braves combined to allow only one run apiece in the first five innings.

Things changed late, however. The Braves scored a pair of runs in the 6th on an infield single by Dansby Swanson to take the lead. It wouldn’t last, however.

St. Louis got a home run from Paul Goldschmidt and an RBI single from Matt Carpenter in the eighth to tie the game against an Atlanta bullpen that looked extremely shaky. Then, in the ninth, they took a lead that they would not relinquish on the back of two-run doubles by Marcell Ozuna and Kolten Wong.

The Cardinals will look to commanding 2-0 series lead in Game 2 with team ace Jack Flaherty on the mound.

St. Louis Cardinals backstop Yadier Molina just can’t seem to get his right thumb to full health this season. The veteran catcher is headed to the injured list for the second time this season due to a nagging thumb strain that will put him on the shelf for approximately three weeks.

The Cardinals will hope that Molina’s injured list stint will help him get back to full health. While he might simply be declining in ability, many have theorized that the Puerto Rican’s struggles this season can be attributed to his problematic right thumb.

Molina has hit only .261/.286/.368 this season, one of the worst seasons of his career. The normally productive veteran catcher has hit only four home runs in 71 games last season after belting 20 in 2018.

The Cardinals, who are currently a game under .500 at 44-45 and in third place in the uber-competitive NL Central, will turn to backup catcher Matt Wieters in Molina’s stead. The former Orioles catcher hasn’t been much better in light duty this season, as he’s hitting only .224.

The catching position has been problematic for the Cardinals this season, and their hope now is that a lengthy IL stint will help Yadier Molina recover, become fully healthy and start to provide more production at the plate over the stretch run.
