The Pittsburgh Steelers have cut starting inside linebacker Myles Jack, the team announced on Thursday, This sees the Steelers free up $8 million in cap space.

Pittsburgh decided to cut Jack after acquiring former Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots linebacker Elandon Roberts on a two-year deal.

Roberts is a two-time Super Bowl champion with the Patriots and has proven to be a key member of the Dolphins’ lineup during his three seasons in Miami, starting 43 of the 47 games he appeared in. During his time with the Dolphins, Roberts made 251 tackles, including a career-record 107 tackles last season.

While the Steelers chose to go with the three-inside linebacker rotation of Jack, Robert Spillane, and Devin Bush last season, it seems as if all three players’ tenure with the Steelers is coming to an end, with Spillane signing for the Las Vegas Raiders on free agency and Bush taking a visit to the Seattle Seahawks. Mark Robinson will be the only current Steelers inside linebacker returning to the team for the 2023 season as a result.

Pittsburgh Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick will be sidelined for several weeks after undergoing an appendectomy on Saturday following the team’s walk-through practice.

According to reports, Fitzpatrick was feeling unwell at practice, which resulted in tests being performed that indicated that he was in need of the appendectomy procedure. The Steelers later announced that he would be unavailable for the game against the New Orleans Saints due to appendicitis.

In addition to missing the Saints’ game, Fitzpatrick is not expected to be available against the Bengals. There is also little likelihood of the safety managing to participate in the Steelers’ clash with the Indianapolis Colts on November 28.

The Steelers activated safety Damontae Kazee from injured reserve, whom they will hope will be able to step in during Fitzpatrick’s absence. Elijah Riley was also activated from the practice squad as an additional backup option.

Fitzpatrick has not been the only NFL player to recently undergo an appendectomy. Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow also underwent the procedure before training camp and was consequently sidelines for two and a half weeks.

The Pittsburgh Steelers recently confirmed that they’ve released Pro Bowl guard David DeCastro. The release reportedly came with a non-football injury designation, meaning that DeCastro is dealing with an injury that wasn’t a result of football activities.

The move will give the Steelers a significant cap relief, considering that DeCastro was set to count $14.2 million against the cap. By releasing him, the organization saved close to $9 million in cap space.

Shortly after confirming the news, Steelers went and agreed on a one-year deal with guard Trai Turner. The five-time Pro Bowler, who previously played with the Carolina Panthers and LA Chargers, will most likely fill DeCastro’s spot in the starting lineup for the 2021 NFL season.

Speaking with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette earlier this week, David DeCastro revealed the nature of his injury. According to the 31-year-old star, he has a nagging ankle issue and will have to have to surgically repair it for the third time.

The procedure might not only cost him the better part of 2021 but could also push him into retirement: “Gotta see how the surgery goes, but I’d have no problem calling it a day and moving on with my life,” DeCastro explained.

DeCastro was drafted by the Steelers in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft. He went on to play 125 games with the franchise, securing three All-Pro nods and six Pro Bowl selections in the process.

Back in 2018, it seemed like the Pittsburgh Steelers had their running back of the future in James Conner. He was putting finishing touches on his Pro Bowl season, and the absence of Le’Veon Bell wasn’t on anybody’s mind.

Just two years later, Conner is now the odd-man-out in the Steelers’ backfield and will reportedly be allowed to find a new team in the free agency.

According to ESPN’s Brooke Pryor, Pittsburgh is “unlikely” to re-sign Conner to a new deal and is already thinking about life past him. Pryor adds that the organization will address their running back needs with an early pick in the upcoming draft.

This isn’t exactly surprising news considering that the Steelers’ running game struggled in 2020 with Conner as their lead back. The 25-year-old player missed three games and averaged just 4.3 rushing yards per game when he was on the field. He also struggled to be a factor in the passing department, managing his lowest output since his rookie year with 215 yards and zero touchdowns.

James Conner entered the league in 2017 as the Steelers’ third-round pick. After being sparsely used in his rookie year, Conner delivered a breakthrough sophomore campaign that saw him fill in for Bell and earn a Pro Bowl nod in the process.

But Conner failed to build on this momentum and largely struggled in 2019. He only had 464 rushing yards while also missing six games due to injuries.

Pittsburgh Steelers are switching up things on quarterback position once again. Steelers’ head coach Mike Tomlin announced on Tuesday that undrafted rookie Devlin Hodges will take over as starting QB from Mason Rudolph in Week 13 game against Cleveland Browns.

Rudolph struggled in Sunday’s game against winless Cincinnati Bengals and was benched on the halftime. Hodges stepped in and provided a spark for Steelers’ offense, throwing for 118 yards and a touchdown to lead the team to a 16-10 win. This was enough for Tomlin to give him a chance against Browns.

“We met as a staff. We’ve decided that we’re going to start Duck this week,” Tomlin told reporters.

According to Tomlin, this is a short-term decision and he will re-evaluate the QB position ahead of their Week 14 game.

“We have no intended plans beyond this one,” he added.

Mason Rudolph was installed as Steelers’ starting QB following Ben Roethlisberger’s injury in Week 2 against Seattle Seahawks. Rudolph had his ups and downs as a starter, throwing for 1,636 yards, 12 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. He is 4-3 in the games he played from beginning to end in 2019.

Steelers signed Devlin Hodges as an undrafted free agent in May and promoted him to the active roster in September. Hodges already started one game in 2019, stepping up for Rudolph in Week 6 against Los Angeles Chargers. He had 132 passing yards, one touchdown, and one interception in that game.

Pittsburgh Steelers are ready to listen to trade offers for their disgruntled All-Pro running back Le’Veon Bell. This comes after Bell decided to miss both the preseason and the start of the regular season after not receiving a new contract from the team.

Of course, this won’t be an easy task, since Steelers would need cooperation from Le’Veon Bell in order to facilitate any trade move. The 26-year-old will need to approve the move since he is currently not under contract, refusing to sign his franchise tag. In case that he doesn’t want to be traded, he just has to wait until trade deadline has passed on October 30th.

But, there is some motivation for Le’Veon Bell to work with the Steelers. Currently, he is losing $855,529 per each game by not playing, which will amount to a pretty hefty sum in case Bell decides to wait until Week 10, the final deadline he has to report to the team. If he doesn’t report by then, Steelers may franchise tag him for 2019 as well, delaying his free agency.

It is still unclear what kind of the market is it out there for Bell. Teams that are willing to offer him a big payday might decide to wait out until the summer. On the other hand, Bell may not want to be a one-year rental for a team that doesn’t intend to sign him next year. With all of that said, there are a handful of NFL teams calling Pittsburgh Steelers about the player.

According to NY Daily News, New York Jets are the team that looks like the most likely candidate to make a move for Le’Veon Bell. While they did not make a concrete offer, it is believed that they could give up their 2019 first round pick or two third rounders. Steelers will probably not accept anything less since they will be able to get a compensatory third-round pick next year if Bell leaves in free agency.

Jets have the cap space to sign Bell in the summer to a kind of a deal he looks, so their approach should be taken seriously.
