Number one seed Carlos Alcaraz defeated number two seed Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3 6-4 on Sunday to win the Barcelona Open, becoming the first player since Rafael Nadal to successfully retain the title.

With five consecutive straight-set victories to his name, the 19-year-old player has won 10 of his 11 matches at his home tournament throughout his career. This is also the first time in the Spaniard’s career that he has successfully completed a title defense.

“It’s incredible to feel this energy, to lift the trophy here in Barcelona in front of all my people,” Alcaraz stated. “My family and my friends are here as well. To lift the trophy here in front of all of them is a great feeling.”

Ranked second in the ATP World Rankings, Alcaraz has won 23 of his 25 matches this year, picking up titles at Indian Wells and Buenos Aires in addition to Barcelona.

Alcaraz will now be looking to the Madrid Open, where he is set to yet again attempt to defend his title.

Not even lengthy bathroom breaks could help Stefanos Tsitsipas avoid early elimination from the 2021 US Open. Tsitsipas, who is currently ranked at the No. 3 male player in the world, exited the tournament in the third round after suffering a shocking 6-3, 4-6, 7-6, 0-6, 7-6 defeat to 18-year-old Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz.

The No.55-ranked Alcaraz took the first set fairly easy, and it was immediately clear that Tsitsipas won’t have an easy job. Still, the Greek managed to bounce back and win the second set before rushing to a 5-2 lead in the third.

This was probably the deciding moment in the match, as Alcaraz managed to save three set points and dug himself out of a deep hole. He forced a tiebreak, which ended in his favor at 7-2.

At this point, Tsitsipas decided to use one of the long bathroom breaks that he became notoriously known for in recent years. Tsitsipas’ habit of using bathroom breaks when his opponent has momentum drew a lot of criticism lately and made him a villain in the eyes of the fans.

While the break helped Tsitsipas win the fourth set without losing a single gem, he couldn’t pull off a complete comeback. Alcaraz kept his cool in the fifth and claimed a massive upset win after another tiebreak.

With this win, Carlos Alcaraz became the youngest player to win against a top 3 ranked opponent at US Open since 1973. He is also the first to do it so at a Grand Slam tournament since 1989.

“I think without this crowd I would not have the possibility to win this match,” said Alcaraz after the match. “I was down at the start of the fourth set, so thank you to the crowd for pushing me through. It is an incredible feeling for me.”

Rafael Nadal cruised to the Australian Open quarterfinals, with each of his opponents failing to win a single set. But despite this dominant run, he couldn’t find a way past the No. 5-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Nadal opened the quarterfinals match against Tsitsipas by winning the two first sets in a comfortable fashion (3-6, 2-6). Neither player managed to break in the third set, setting up a tiebreak in which the 34-year-old Spaniard took an early 2-1 lead.

However, several unforced errors allowed Tsitsipas to make a comeback and win the tiebreak 7-4. He then won the fourth set as well, setting up a thrilling finale.

In the fifth set, Nadal had a 5-4 lead at one point before Tsitsipas won two straight games and got an opportunity to serve for the win. The 22-year-old Greek kept his composure despite starting 0-30 and managed to secure his second Australian Open semifinals.

“I’m speechless,” said Tsitsipas after the match. “I have no words to describe what just happened. It’s an unbelievable feeling to be able to fight at such a level and just be able to give it my all on the court.”

Stefanos Tsitsipas is now set to face Daniil Medvedev in the Australian Open semifinals in an attempt to get to his first career Grand Slam finals. On the other side of the bracket, Novak Djokovic will play against AslanKaratsev.

Rafael Nadal, on the other hand, missed an opportunity to stay in the hunt for his 21st Grand Slam title, which would be the most Majors titles in history for a male tennis player.

The 2019 US Open is only entering its second round, but we are already witnessing some shockers. Fourth seed Dominic Thiem and eighth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas both suffered defeats in their opening matches and have surprisingly been eliminated from the tournament.

Thiem, who reached quarterfinals last year, faced unseeded Italian Thomas Fabbiano on Wednesday and entered the match as an overwhelming favorite. Still, Fabbiano, who is ranked 92nd in the world, caught the 25-year-old Austrian by surprise and fairly easy grabbed a win with 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in sets.

Although Fabbiano put up an impressive performance, Thiem’s downfall was largely contributed by his shaky backhand and 48 unforced errors.

Β “I got very, very tired and exhausted after two sets. I’m far away from 100 percent. Like this, it’s very tough to win,” – Thiem admitted after the match. “I went on court because in tennis, especially in long two-week tournaments, anything can happen.”

The eighth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas also lasted only four sets, before being eliminated by No.43 ranked Andrey Rublev.

Tsitsipas lost the first set, but it looked like he might take control of the match after winning a nerve-wracking tiebreaker in the second set. Things, however, went south for the 21-year-old Greek in the next two sets as he clashed with chair umpire Damien Dumusois on several occasions and began struggling with cramps.

With Tsitsipas losing his nerves and step towards the end of the match, Rublev seized the opportunity and got a 6-4, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (7), 7-5 win to advance into the next round.

Other surprising exits in the first round of 2019 US Open include the elimination of Wimbledon semi-finalist Roberto Bautista Agut, who fell down against unseeded Mikhail Kukushkin and the loss of ninth-seeded Karen Khachanov against Vasek Pospisi.

The first major upset of the men’s singles portion of the Australian Open happened on Sunday with Roger Federer bowing out to 20-year-old Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Federer, ranked #3 in the world and the defending champion of the tournament, lost a long, drawn-out match in which he was worn out by the rising Greek star.

The Swiss tennis legend admitted that Tsitsipas, 17 years his junior, took advantage of his lack of stamina. The match lasted nearly 4 hours on a warm Melbourne evening.

The game was full of tension and sets that went to extra games, with the final result ending up as a 6-7 (110), 7-6 (3), 7-5, 7-6 (5) win for Tsitsipas.

Federer, the winner of 20 career Grand Slam singles titles, including 6 at the Australian Open, exited in the Round of 16 for the first time in Melbourne for the first time since 2003.

Despite an unrivaled run of dominance that has lasted for the better part of two decades, Federer seems to be slowing down a bit as he nears 40 years old.

Tsitsipas’s win on Sunday also signifies a changing of the guard in the tennis world, with the young Greek player showing that he will be a force to reckon with in the years to come.
