When Tennessee Titans signed veteran kicker Stephen Gostkowski back in September, the organization believed they solved their problems on the position for good. However, it’s safe to say that things didn’t quite turn out that way.

Gostkowski, who was sidelined for most of 2019 with a hip injury, is struggling to find his form and hasn’t been even remotely reliable for the Titans this season. Another confirmation came on Thursday night against division rivals Indianapolis Colts, when the 36-year-old kicker failed to convert on a 44-yard FG attempt that would pull his team within one score in a game they struggled to put points on the board.

Titans ended up losing the game 34-17, and while the rest of the team didn’t play much better, Gostkowski’s miss was the central topic of head coach Mike Vrabel’s post-game conference.

Vrabel avoided throwing Gostkowski “under the bus” but admitted that his job isn’t safe anymore.

“We put the guys out there we feel like give us the best chance to win. He’s hit some big kicks, and missed some,” said Vrabel. “We have to evaluate that position and make a decision.”

Stephen Gostkowski now has eight missed field goals in the season, with most of them coming in 40-49 yards range. This is already tied for most by a Titans’ kicker in a single season since 2001.

Tennessee Titans are making a switch at the kicker position. According to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Titans signed a veteran Stephen Gostkowski while waiving third-year PK Greg Joseph.

Gostkowski, who spent his entire career with the New England Patriots, has been working out with the Titans for the past couple of days. In Tennessee, the 36-year-old kicker will be coached by Mike Vrabel, with whom he was a teammate in New England.

Titans organized competition at the kicker position during training camp with Joseph and undrafted rookie Tucker McCann eyeing the job. The team, however, wasn’t satisfied with either of the options so they decided to bring in a proven veteran.

Stephen Gostkowski was Pats’ full-time kicker since 2006, and currently holds the franchise’s career scoring record with 1,775 points. During his time in New England, Gostkowski won three Super Bowls, made four Pro Bowl appearances, and received All-Pro honors three times.

Gostkowski’s career stats include making 87.4 percent of his field-goal attempts and 98.3 percent conversion on extra points.

The New England Patriots’ locker room will miss plenty of familiar faces in 2020. Following the departure of quarterback Tom Brady and several other players in free agency, Pats now also said goodbye to their longtime kicker Stephen Gostkowski.

Patriots confirmed on Monday that they released Gostkowski, who will leave the franchise after 14 years.

According to reports, Patriots opted to release Gostkowski, who was the longest-tenured player on the roster after Brady left, in order to give themselves some salary-cap relief. The 36-year-old was scheduled to earn $4.8 million next season.

New England is projected to have the second-least cap space for 2020 NLF season, with only Super Bowl champions Kansas City Chiefs having less. Pats’ cap struggles are mostly the result of dead money originating from the contracts of players that are not on their roster, including Brady, Antonio Brown, and Michael Bennett.

Patriots drafted Stephen Gostkowski in the fourth round of 2006 NFL Draft with the intention to make him Adam Vinatieri’s successor. Gostkowski responded to the task exceptionally, proving to be clutch in deciding moments and helping New England win three more Super Bowls.

Gostkowski, who has four Pro Bowl appearances, will leave New England Patriots as the team’s all-time leading scorer with 1,775 points. During his time with the franchise, he made 374 out of 428 field goals attempted while converting 98% of his extra points. In the playoffs, he was 31-for-36 on FGs and 79-for-83 on extra points.
