The Tennessee Titans announced on Wednesday their plans to retire the jersey numbers of the franchise’s two biggest icons.

Quarterback Steve McNair and running back Eddie George, who teamed together to lead one of the late 1990s and early 2000s’ most potent offensive attacks, will be immortalized by the team by having their #9 and #27 jerseys retired.

This means that no player in the future of the Titans’ franchise will ever wear the number 9 or the number 27 again.

The numbers will be retired during a ceremony at the Titans’ home opener against the Indianapolis Colts on September 15th, 2019. This will be a special moment for Titans fans, who watched as McNair and George led the team to a Super Bowl bid and several playoff appearances during their time with the team.

George was one of the best running backs of his era, as he accumulated 10,441 rushing yards and 78 total touchdowns in a career in which he spent 8 of 9 seasons with the Titans franchise.

McNair, the quarterback for the Titans in this period, was also beloved by his team’s fans. He was named NFL MVP as the Titans’ QB in 2003 and made 3 Pro Bowls.

He was tragically murdered by a jilted ex-lover in 2009.

The Titans’ home opener will be a sight to see for football fans from all over the world.
