Ottawa Senators haven’t had a captain since late 2018 when legendary defenseman and then team captain Erik Karlsson joined San Jose Sharks. And while it isn’t unusual anything unusual for NHL teams, head coach D.J. Smith recently hinted that Senators might be ready to have a commanding figure on ice once again.

Smith talked about Senators’ captain situation with Ottawa Sun in a recent interview, admitting there were some internal discussions about the matter with general manager Pierre Dorion.

“We’ve talked a little bit about it,” said Smith. “There’s some tough choices to be made there, and are they ready? Is it now? Is it in another year? That’s something and a discussion will go on throughout the summer.”

But, any potential candidate will have to prove to Smith and the rest of the coaching staff that he’s ready to lead the team.

“The big thing is you want to make sure the guy is ready and it’s not too soon,” Smith added.

Since Karlsson left, Sharks used alternate captains in Jean-Gabriel Pageau, Mark Borowiecki, Ron Hainsey, and Thomas Chabot. Pageau recently left the team, but the other three players are considered to be the front runners for the honor.

Ottawa Senators had a disappointing season in 2019/20, finishing next to last in East with 25-34-12 record and failing to advance to playoffs third time in a row. While this might not be tied to their lack of captain, you can’t blame Senators for thinking that having one will solidify their team and maybe change their luck.

Ottawa Senators are still a long way from completing their rebuild, but they recently made an important step towards the finishing line. The team announced on Thursday that they have signed their rising star defenseman Thomas Chabot to an eight-year extension.

The deal is worth $8 million annually ($64 million overall) and will keep Chabot with the organization through 2027/28 NHL season. The 22-year-old Quebec-native was entering the final year of his entry-level contract.

Chabot, who was 18th overall pick in 2015, is coming off an impressive campaign in 2018/19 in which he had 14 goals and 41 assists en route to earning his first All-Star appearance.

“Thomas is an exceptional talent and an outstanding teammate, who is impactful both on and off the ice,” – said Senators general manager Pierre Dorion in a statement. “We are convinced Thomas will have a significant impact on the Ottawa Senators as we develop and grow into a highly competitive team over the coming seasons and we are extremely proud that Thomas will continue to be a key part of our team’s future success moving forward. Today is a great day for the Ottawa Senators franchise.”

Since making his NHL debut in 2016, Thomas Chabot played 134 NHL games with Senators and contributed with 23 goals and 57 assists for a total of 80 points. Chabot is also part of Canada’s national team and was part of the squad that won a silver medal on 2019 IIHF World Championship.

Resigning Chabot represents a step in the right direction for Senators, especially considering the fact that they have parted ways with most of their key players in the past couple of season. As part of their rebuild, the franchise traded away Erik Karlsson, Mike Hoffman, and Matt Duchene among others while focusing on younger players.
