We won’t get to see Tiger Woods back on golf courses anytime soon. The 15-time major champion announced on Wednesday that he underwent ankle surgery and is likely facing a lengthy break while recovering.

In a statement posted on Twitter, Woods shared that the procedure addressed the consequences of the injuries he suffered in a car crash he had in early 2021. The surgery was determined as “successful,” and the 47-year-old is currently recovering and “looks forward to beginning his rehabilitation.”

When reached out to by The Associated Press, Wood’s agent Mark Steinberg said that there is currently “no timetable” on Woods’ return to golf.

“The first goal is to recover and lead a much more enjoyable day-to-day life,” Steinberg added.

Tiger Woods played in the 2023 Masters earlier this month, making the cut for the 23rd straight time in his career and tying the all-time record for most consecutive cuts made. He would go on to retire from the event in the third round after leg pain made it hard for him to move through the first eight holes.

Woods previously intended to appear in all four major events this year, but that won’t be the case now. PGA Championship, the U.S. Open, and The Open are all taking place in the next three months, and considering the usual recovery time for the surgery Woods had, he won’t recover in time to play at any of them.

It seems like Tiger Woods just can’t catch a break from injuries. After a serious of minor health issues in the past few months, Woods now had to undergo an arthroscopic procedure on his left knee. According to Yahoo Sports, this is at least the fifth knee surgery that the 43-year-old golfer had so far.

Luckily for Woods, however, the procedure shouldn’t sideline him for an extended period of time, and he is expected to make a full recovery in time for PGA Tour tournament in Japan in October.

“I expect Tiger to make a full recovery. We did what was needed, and also examined the entire knee. There were no additional problems,” said Dr. Vern Cooley, who performed the procedure, in a statement shared on Wood’s official Twitter profile.

After struggling with back injuries for the past several years, Tiger Woods made a big comeback in 2019 when he won Masters Tournament. This was his first majors win in 11 years. Although it looked like he left injuries behind at the time, Woods soon found himself facing health issues again.

Woods dealt with back stiffness in recent months while suffering a neck strain that saw him being forced to miss the Arnold Palmer Invitational. He also pulled out of Northern Trust due to oblique strain.

It was a long and hard process, but it looks like Tiger Woods finally completed his long-anticipated comeback among the top golfers in the world. Woods, who was making a return after undergoing four major back surgeries since 2014, managed to grab a win at the season-ending tournament on the PGA Tour schedule, Tour Championship. This was his first in five years and is 80th PGA Tour win.

The 42-year-old golfer finished with 1-over-par 71, staying two shots over Billy Horschel.

“I was pretty emotional when Rory [McIlroy] was tapping out, he was finishing out,” said Woods after the win. “I looked around, and the tournament was over because I’d already put the bunker shot on the green, and I’d won 80. 80 is a big number. I’ve been sitting on 79 for about five years now, and to get 80 is a pretty damned good feeling.”

This win represents a significant feat for Tiger Woods and comes a year since he was questioning his physical health and didn’t know whether he will be able to return to golf at all.

Fast forward 12 months and Woods managed to climb from No. 1,199th to No. 13 in the world. He recorded seven top-10 finishes in 2018 and is now only two wins behind Sam Snead, who is all-time PGA Tour leader in victories. But Woods doesn’t intend to stop here.

“I appreciate it a little bit more than I did because I don’t take it for granted that I’m going to have another decade, two decades in my future of playing golf at this level,” – he added. “It means a lot more to me now in that sense because I didn’t know if I’d ever be out here playing again, doing this again.”
