Tim Tebow’s attempt to make a return to the NFL as a tight end won’t have a happy ending after all. The former quarterback and baseball player was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars on Tuesday.

Tebow spent training camp with the Jags and appeared in the team’s first preseason game. He played 16 snaps and had zero catches.

After the news about his release became official, Tebow went on Twitter to thank Jacksonville for the opportunity they gave him.

Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer explained that the decision to let Tebow go came down to his lack of tackling experience and inability to contribute on special teams.

“We knew that was an uphill battle for Tim,” Meyer told reporters. “Players loved him, locker room loved him, but it was the right thing.”

Tim Tebow entered the NFL in 2010 as the Denver Broncos’ first-round pick. He made 14 starts in his first two seasons as a pro and led Broncos to a playoff win during the 2011 postseason. In 2012, Broncos signed Peyton Manning and decided to trade Tebow to the New York Jets.

Tebow lasted one season with the Jets before being released. He later had brief stints with the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles and was out of the league by 2015.

After his NFL career ended, Tebow tried to make it as a baseball player and signed a minor league deal with the New York Mets in 2016. He played for several of the Mets’ affiliates in the next four seasons but didn’t manage to get a single MLB appearance. He decided to retire from baseball in early 2021.

Former star NFL quarterback Tim Tebow embarked upon a journey five years ago following his retirement from the game to become a professional baseball player.

After three Minor League seasons and a 2020 campaign that was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Tebow announced on Wednesday that he was stepping away from the sport.

Tebow played baseball in high school at a very high level, which is why after his NFL career came to a close, he decided to fulfill a childhood dream and sign a contract with the New York Mets.

Starting off as any other “prospect” would in the low minor leagues, Tebow worked his way all the way up to the AAA ranks in the 2019 season, just one step below the Major Leagues.

The Florida native began to show signs of promise in 2018 at AA, batting .273 with 6 home runs in 84 games. However, he stalled out and struggled at the highest level of the Minor Leagues in 2019, posting just a .163 average in 77 games with the Syracuse Mets.

The outfielder never achieved his goal of playing at the Major League level, but certainly accomplished more than many thought he would after rising all the way to the top of the Mets’ minor league ranks. For now, Tebow is expected to stay busy with charitable endeavors and broadcasting work.
